Yes, reusable cups may release microplastics, but the evidence does not show that every cup sheds them—or that any cup is completely particle-free. A 2025 comparison found fewer microplastics from the reusable cups it tested than from the single-use cups in the study. For everyday care, wash a reusable cup regularly with hot water and washing-up liquid, follow its manufacturer’s cleaning and heat instructions, and replace it if its surface becomes rough, cracked, or visibly worn.
What studies say about microplastics from reusable cups
A 2025 study comparing particular reusable and single-use cups reported fewer microplastics from the reusable cups tested. That finding applies to those products and the study’s conditions; it does not establish that all reusable cups shed less, or that a reusable cup never releases particles. The study’s abstract does not provide a universal ranking of reusable-cup materials. Read the 2025 study abstract on PubMed.

It is important not to confuse that comparison with a separate study of disposable cups. Akbulut and colleagues tested single-use cups made of polypropylene, polystyrene, expanded polystyrene, and polyethylene-coated paper. Across selected tests using water at 4 °C, 50 °C, and 80 °C and contact times from zero to 20 minutes, they measured 126–1,420 particles per litre. The highest result was from a polypropylene cup at 50 °C after 20 minutes; the lowest was from a polyethylene-coated paper cup at 4 °C with zero-minute contact. Those are measurements from the tested single-use cups, not reusable cups or an estimate for your own cup. See the 2024 study in Foods.

How to clean a reusable cup safely
- Wash it regularly. Use hot water and washing-up liquid, as recommended by Germany’s Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR).
- Use a dishwasher only if the maker permits it. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for dishwasher compatibility, temperature limits, and any other cleaning restrictions.
- Dry it fully. Dry the cup thoroughly or leave it to dry completely before storing it.
- Clean it before refilling if it is visibly dirty. At self-service drink machines, avoid letting your personal cup touch the dispensing nozzle.
- Stop using it when its surface deteriorates. Replace a cup with cracks, roughness, or visible wear; BfR advises using reusable cups only while the surface remains smooth and free of hairline cracks and visible wear.
These steps support routine hygiene and help you follow the cup’s intended use. They should not be treated as a method for eliminating microplastics. See BfR’s reusable-cup guidance.
Which reusable cup materials are suitable?
BfR identifies smooth, easy-to-clean porcelain, stainless steel, rigid temperature-stable plastics, and glass as suitable materials when they comply with food-contact rules. For practical selection, prioritize a smooth surface that is easy to clean, and check the manufacturer’s instructions for heat and dishwasher compatibility. The cited evidence does not support ranking all reusable materials by microplastic shedding or calling any cup microplastic-free.

Take care with cups sold as bamboo ware
Some cups marketed as bamboo or made with other natural-material claims are actually melamine-formaldehyde plastic containing plant fillers. BfR says hot or acidic drinks can cause melamine and formaldehyde to migrate from melamine-formaldehyde articles. Do not use these cups for hot coffee or tea; follow the product’s stated restrictions.

RIVM’s 2024 inventory identified plastic, stainless steel, and silicone among common materials used in reusable food-contact products. Its review says regular cleaning makes bacterial illness from reusable food-contact articles unlikely, while sharing a drinking container can raise hygiene concerns. It also prioritized 20 substances for targeted follow-up research based on their toxicological potential and potential to be released into food. That is a call for further investigation, not evidence that every listed chemical is released at harmful levels. Read RIVM’s 2024 report.
