Phone photos usually look blurry because the camera glass is dirty or covered, the camera has not focused on the subject, or the phone or subject moved during the exposure. Close-up softness, glare, halos and lines can also come from normal lens limits, bright light, accessories or device-specific image processing. Start by cleaning and uncovering the camera, adding light, tapping to focus and holding still; seek device support if blur or haze persists.
Why are my phone pictures blurry?
Blur has two common causes: focus and movement. If the camera focuses on the wrong distance, the intended subject will be soft. If the phone or subject moves while the image is being captured, details smear instead. Low light makes motion blur more likely because the camera may need a longer exposure.

- Blur mainly in dim light or on moving subjects: add light and steady the phone. Stabilization can reduce camera shake on supported phones, but it cannot guarantee that a moving subject will be sharp.
- Blur at close range: the subject may be inside the selected lens’s minimum focusing distance. Move back and try again.
- Blur that appears across scenes: check for dirt, a cover or protector, then inspect the camera glass for damage.
Samsung’s support guidance notes that moving the camera or photographing a moving subject can readily create blur. Google recommends keeping both the phone and subject still for Night Sight, using a stable surface or tripod when practical. - Inspect the front and rear camera glass. Gently wipe it with a clean, soft microfiber or other lint-free cloth. Do not use abrasive materials or put liquid directly on the camera.
- Temporarily remove any case, film, lens cover or camera protector that overlaps the camera, then take a comparison photo.
- In good light, tap the subject in the viewfinder to focus. If it remains soft at close range, move farther away and reframe.
- Keep the phone and subject still while capturing. In low light, brace the phone on a stable surface.
- If a bright source creates a halo or washout, change the camera angle and try without flash.
- Compare the front and rear cameras and, where available, another lens or zoom setting. If the issue remains, restart the phone and install available software updates; another camera app can help determine whether the symptom is app-specific.
- Look for cracks, persistent haze, internal condensation or blur that stays in the same part of the image across distances and scenes. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if you find these signs.
Apple’s general guidance also recommends cleaning both camera lenses and checking that nothing obstructs them: If the camera or flash on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch isn’t working.

Why is the camera out of focus when I get close?
Each camera lens has a focusing range. Getting closer does not always make a picture sharper, and a phone may switch lenses when you zoom. If the selected camera is intended for more distant subjects, a nearby object can remain out of focus even when the viewfinder appears magnified.
Try stepping back, tapping the subject again and using a lens or close-focus mode suited to that distance, if your phone offers one. Avoid extreme digital zoom when detail matters. Available lenses, automatic switching and manual controls vary by model and software.

Published distance guidance is device-specific, not a universal rule. Google’s Pixel Camera Help recommends keeping the subject at least 60 cm away for optimal focus. Samsung’s guidance includes standard-lens and telephoto examples of at least 12 inches and 20 inches, respectively; its 2026 support page lists 30 cm for the S25 Ultra’s 5x telephoto camera and 80 cm for the S26 Ultra’s 5x telephoto camera. Check guidance for your exact phone and lens rather than treating any one measurement as applicable to every camera.
Why are the edges of my close-up blurry?
Some edge softness is a normal optical effect, not necessarily a damaged camera. Depth of field is limited: when a phone is very close to a document or object, the center may look sharp while the edges fall out of focus. Google notes that larger sensors on Pixel Pro models can naturally blur areas outside the focus plane in close-up shots; Samsung also identifies shooting distance, aperture and subject position as factors.

Move farther from the document and reframe it, or use a macro or close-focus mode if your model provides one. Compare the result at another distance before concluding that the camera is faulty.

Dirty glass, protectors and obstructions
Fingerprints, dust, protective film, cases and lens covers can scatter or block light. They may make a photo look soft or create flare, halos, lines or color distortion. Clean the glass and retest without anything covering it.

Bright light and flare
A strong light aimed toward the camera can produce glare, halos or washed-out areas. Clean the lens, shift the angle to keep the light from shining directly into it, and try the shot without flash if a halo appears. Samsung notes that streaks can be more noticeable with a dirty lens or high zoom.
Indoor lighting and image-processing artifacts
Some indoor lights can cause flicker or dark lines in photos and video. Samsung describes a shutter-speed adjustment for certain device contexts, but the setting is model-specific. Google notes that HDR+ rendering on Pixel 3a and earlier can occasionally create unexpected line patterns. Test in different lighting and consult instructions for the exact model rather than copying a setting from another phone.

Cases, mounts and magnets
On supported iPhone camera systems, strong magnets near the camera can interfere with optical image stabilization (OIS) and closed-loop autofocus. Apple also says lens converters, metallic cases or magnetic mounts may worsen low-light motion blur in some situations. This is a model- and accessory-specific warning, not a rule about every phone. Remove the accessory and compare a photo to check whether it is contributing.
Condensation or physical damage
A temperature change can cause condensation; Samsung says internal condensation should clear naturally. Inspect the camera glass and surrounding area for cracks, scratches, persistent haze or signs of moisture inside the device. If haze does not clear or damage is visible, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider rather than trying to diagnose a defective camera module yourself.
When should I contact phone support?
Seek device-specific support if blur remains after cleaning the camera, removing obstructions, testing in good light and trying another distance or camera. Persistent haze, internal condensation, visible damage or a fixed-area blur across different scenes also merits an inspection. These symptoms can have different causes; general troubleshooting cannot identify a particular failed camera module remotely.
