Often, yes—but it depends on the outage and your Hue setup. Hue lights communicate locally with a Bridge over Zigbee, or directly with a nearby phone over Bluetooth on compatible models. That local lighting connection is different from internet access. Remote control from outside the home requires internet, while Philips does not promise that every app feature, automation, voice assistant, or integration will behave normally during an internet outage.
What an internet outage means for Hue
In a Bridge setup, the lights communicate with the Bridge over Zigbee. The Bridge connects to your router by Ethernet, providing a link between the Zigbee network, your home network, and the internet. Philips describes Zigbee as separate from Wi-Fi; that architecture makes local lighting communication distinct from internet access. Philips Hue explains how Hue works, and its Bridge FAQ describes the router connection.

Philips lists remote access as a Bridge-enabled feature, so you should not expect to control your home lights from outside when internet access is unavailable. For someone at home, however, the documented architecture does not establish a guarantee for every app command or feature. Local app control may depend on your phone’s connection to the home network, the Bridge, the app, and your configuration. Philips’s reviewed information does not specify exactly which app functions or automations survive an internet-only outage.
What still works depends on what failed
| Outage | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Internet service only; power and local network are working | The local Hue lighting connection is separate from the internet, but Philips does not document a feature-by-feature guarantee for app control, automations, voice commands, or integrations during this outage. |
| Router or local network is down | The Bridge’s connection to the router is unavailable. Do not assume that app control through the home network will continue just because the lights and Bridge use Zigbee. |
| Electrical power is down | The bulbs and Bridge need power, so Hue cannot provide lighting or smart control during a power cut. |
The distinctions between internet service, the local network, and electrical power follow from Philips’s description of the system; they are not published outage-test results.

Control options that do not rely on remote access
Bluetooth-compatible lights
Some Hue lights can connect directly to a nearby phone using Bluetooth, without a Bridge. Philips documents basic Bluetooth controls: switching lights on or off, dimming, and adjusting color or white tone. Its published capacity is up to 10 lights per Bluetooth control device. This is local, nearby control—not a way to operate lights from outside the home. Bluetooth support varies by model, so check the product information for your bulb. See Philips Hue’s Bluetooth setup information.
A Hue Dimmer Switch paired directly to a bulb
Philips says a Hue bulb can pair directly with a Hue lighting accessory without a Bridge or app. With a compatible bulb and Dimmer Switch, the switch can turn the light on or off and adjust brightness. This offers a physical control path; check compatibility for the specific products before relying on it. Philips’s instructions are at How to connect Philips Hue without a Bridge.

Bridge-based system
The Bridge supports the Zigbee network and, according to Philips, enables features such as remote access, automations, voice integration, and entertainment sync. Philips lists capacity of up to 50 lights and 12 accessories for the Hue Bridge (V2). Those are manufacturer-published product capacities, not offline-performance guarantees. The reviewed product information does not say which Bridge-dependent features continue unchanged through an internet interruption.
Choosing the right setup for local control
| Setup | Documented controls and capacity | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth-compatible Hue lights | Nearby phone control for on/off, dimming, color, and white tone; up to 10 lights per control device. | Requires Bluetooth-compatible lights and nearby phone access. |
| Hue Bridge (V2) | Zigbee network; up to 50 lights and 12 accessories, according to Philips. | Connects to the router for network and internet features; exact offline behavior for individual features is not fully stated. |
| Hue bulb paired directly with a Hue Dimmer Switch | Basic on/off and brightness control without the app. | Requires compatible products and provides a narrower, physical control option. |
Philips’s current system overview lists the Hue Bridge Pro as supporting up to 150+ lights. That is a published capacity, not a measure of outage reliability or proof that more features work offline. Compare the Hue system options against the controls and accessories you actually need.

What Philips does not specify about offline use
Philips’s product and FAQ information describes how the lighting network is connected, but it does not provide a complete offline compatibility chart for particular Hue app versions, stored schedules, voice assistants, or third-party integrations. Whether any of these continue to work can depend on the local network and configuration. Treat those functions as uncertain during an outage rather than assuming they will continue—or that they will all stop.
