Do Open-Ear Earbuds Leak Sound? How to Reduce It

Open-ear earbuds can leak sound by design. Lowering volume and improving fit can help, but they cannot guarantee privacy.

Yes. Open-ear earbuds can let people nearby hear some of what you’re listening to. That sound leakage is a normal trade-off of leaving the ear canal open, not necessarily a fault. Turning the volume down and adjusting the earbuds so their sound outlets point toward and sit closer to your ear canals can help, but neither step guarantees privacy.

Why open-ear earbuds leak sound

Unlike sealed in-ear earbuds, open-ear designs leave the ear canal open. Sound can travel toward your ears and outward into the surrounding space. Soundcore says some nearby sound is an unavoidable consequence of its open-ear clip-on design, while Huawei notes that open-ear and open-fit earphones can be more prone to leakage than in-ear models.

Leakage is more likely to be noticeable when playback is loud, the room is quiet, or the earbuds are poorly aligned. Soundcore’s support page for the C50i says an outlet farther from the ear canal may increase leakage. Huawei likewise recommends adjusting the fit. This is normal behavior for an open design, not proof that a particular pair is defective.

How to reduce sound leakage

  1. Lower the volume. In quiet places, Soundcore and Huawei each advise keeping volume at or below 50%. This is manufacturer guidance, not a universal threshold for inaudibility or hearing safety; someone nearby may still hear audio below that level. See Soundcore’s open-ear guidance and Huawei’s support advice.
  2. Adjust the fit and angle. Position each earbud so its sound outlet faces toward and sits closer to the ear canal. A loose or misaligned fit can make leakage more noticeable. For model-specific instructions, consult Soundcore’s C50i fit guidance or Bose’s instructions for the Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen).
  3. Try a model’s leakage-control setting, if it has one. Features vary by model and cannot turn an open earbud into a sealed one. Bose says its OpenAudio technology directs sound toward the ears while helping minimize leakage; Bose also acknowledges that sound may be noticeable at very high volumes in very quiet environments. These are manufacturer claims, not results from an independent comparison.
  4. Consider the sound-quality trade-off. Nothing describes high-frequency attenuation as a way to address leakage. Its support material notes that reducing high frequencies may also reduce crisp detail and perceived volume. Check whether your specific earbuds offer such a control before relying on it; availability and effect are model-specific. See Nothing’s sound-issue guidance.

When open-ear earbuds are the wrong choice

If other people must not hear your audio—for example, in a quiet office, library, or confidential conversation—do not rely on open-ear earbuds for privacy. In-ear or noise-cancelling headphones are better candidates when stronger isolation matters, although the right choice also depends on comfort, fit, and how much awareness of your surroundings you need. Soundcore recommends more isolating headphone types for listeners seeking stronger isolation: its open-ear guidance and C50i support page discuss the trade-off.

What to compare when choosing earbuds

  • Privacy: Open designs allow outward sound; in-ear options may suit settings where isolation matters more.
  • Awareness: Open ears make it easier to hear your surroundings, which can be useful when you need situational awareness.
  • Fit and comfort: A comfortable, well-positioned pair is more practical than one you need to keep readjusting.
  • Listening level: If you have to turn an open-ear pair up to hear clearly in your usual environment, leakage may also become more noticeable.

There are no standardized independent leakage measurements in the cited sources for comparing models, so a universal audible distance or product ranking is not established. Test fit and volume in the setting where you plan to use the earbuds, and choose a more isolating type if privacy is essential.
