Usually, no. An older phone, computer or smart-home device does not need replacing just because you installed a newer router. With compatible radio modes enabled, it can connect using the fastest Wi-Fi mode it supports. A router upgrade may help when the router—not the client device—is the bottleneck, but check what is limiting speed before spending money.
Will an old device slow down your Wi-Fi?
Age alone is not a reason to replace a Wi-Fi client. Apple’s router guidance says that enabling all radio modes lets older devices connect using the fastest mode they support: Apple’s recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points. A newer router does not add newer Wi-Fi hardware to an old phone or laptop; that device remains limited by its own capabilities.

That does not mean every device will reach the same speed. A client’s supported Wi-Fi generation, band, signal quality and location affect its connection. Network performance can also be limited by the broadband plan, router, interference or the number of active wireless devices. The FCC notes that multiple active wireless devices can affect performance in its Broadband Speeds consumer guide.

Find out what is limiting speed before replacing equipment
- Test in more than one place. Run a speed test near the router and again where the slowdown occurs. If practical, compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection. These comparisons can help distinguish a room-specific wireless problem from a broader connection issue; they are diagnostic steps, not a guarantee of a particular result.
- Compare your plan with the router. Check the subscribed internet speed and the router model’s specifications. The FCC advises checking the router model when diagnosing broadband speed. If troubleshooting does not solve the problem, outdated equipment may be involved; a router that cannot provide the subscribed speed may need replacement or an ISP-provided upgrade.
- Update software and firmware. Install available updates for the router and affected devices. Apple says router firmware updates can improve stability, performance and security: Apple’s router settings guidance.
- Check enabled modes and bands. Enable all radio modes and bands the router supports, provided they work with your security and device requirements. Older clients can then use the fastest supported mode available to them. Apple recommends enabling all supported bands: Apple’s Wi-Fi settings guidance.
- Review placement and channel settings. Keep the router in a suitable location and consider neighboring networks and sources of interference. Apple notes that wider channels can increase speed but are more susceptible to interference. Its guidance recommends 20 MHz channel width on 2.4 GHz and Auto or all widths on 5 GHz and 6 GHz where available: Apple’s channel recommendations.
- Investigate band or SSID compatibility if newer devices fall back to a slower connection. On Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7, confirm that both the client and router/access point support the relevant generation and feature. If band names differ, some compatible Apple devices may show a limited-compatibility prompt and fall back to 5 GHz rather than joining 6 GHz. See Apple’s Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 guidance.
When a router replacement can help
Consider replacing or upgrading the router when its specifications cannot meet the broadband plan, it lacks needed coverage or capacity, it is unreliable, or it no longer receives necessary support. The FCC’s guidance says that if updates are unavailable and the router cannot provide subscribed speeds, a new router or ISP upgrade may be needed: FCC Broadband Speeds guide.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Do not assume that a newer Wi-Fi generation alone will fix a slow connection. Broadband service limits, router placement, interference, configuration and client capability can all constrain real-world results. Check whether the proposed router addresses the problem you actually observed.

| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Wi-Fi generation and supported bands | These determine which connection options are available, but a client can use only the features it supports. |
| WAN/LAN ports and throughput | Confirm that the router can handle the broadband speed you subscribe to; check the model’s specifications. |
| Coverage and mesh or access-point options | Match the setup to the home layout and the locations where service is weak. |
| Capacity for simultaneous devices | Consider how many devices are typically active, since multiple wireless devices can affect performance. |
| Firmware and security support | Check whether the manufacturer continues to provide updates and whether the router’s security settings suit your devices. |
| Legacy-device compatibility | Confirm that older devices can still connect using supported radio modes and security settings. |
For Apple devices, Apple describes WPA2/WPA3 Transitional as a mixed mode that uses WPA3 Personal with devices that support it while allowing older devices to use WPA2 Personal (AES): Apple’s security recommendations. Verify compatibility for your own devices and router before changing security settings.
