Fill all six party slots thoughtfully: you take up to three characters into battle, while eligible allies can still benefit from Z Abilities belonging to the other party members. Then adjust the lineup to the specific Story battle—there is no single roster established as best for every PvE stage.
Start with the characters you own
Open a character’s details and check its Tags, Episodes, and Z Ability. A useful starting point is to find characters whose Z Abilities boost Tags or Episodes represented by the fighters you plan to use. The official party formation FAQ recommends building around Z Abilities and using the Party Formation screen’s filters to find matching Tags or Episodes.

- Choose the characters you are considering for battle.
- Check their details for Tags and Episodes they share.
- In Party Formation, filter for those Tags or Episodes and look for Z Abilities that boost them.
- Compare candidate parties by how many intended battle members receive the listed boosts, as well as whether the characters are trained and suitable for the encounter.
Plan all six party slots
A party has six characters, and you select up to three of them as battle members. The other three are not automatically wasted slots: their Z Abilities can contribute to eligible allies. That means you should consider both the fighters you will take into battle and the support their fellow party members provide.
In an interview on the DRAGON BALL Official Site, game producer TOSHI explained that the three characters who do not fight “still contribute a lot.” His interview also says not to overthink Z Abilities at the beginning of the Story, but to consider them more carefully as enemies and PvP battles get tougher. This is general guidance, not a current character ranking.

Rarity is not a team strategy
Rarity can indicate a character’s strength, but a party made up only of rare characters is not necessarily effective. Bandai Namco’s rarity FAQ also points to party formation, strategy, and training, and recommends experimenting in Story modes and events. When comparing two lineups, look at their Z Ability coverage and whether the characters are trained enough for your progress—not rarity alone.
Adapt the party to the Story battle
The game distinguishes Main Story from Event Stories on its mode guide. Shared-Tag or shared-Episode synergy is a practical baseline, not a guarantee that one formation will suit every encounter. Before entering a battle, consider its stated conditions and choose the strongest usable combination from your roster that fits them. Revisit the party as your available characters and progression change.

What a general team guide can—and cannot—recommend
The official sources describe party mechanics, but they do not establish a current universal PvE tier list, an exhaustive Story-stage counter guide, or a single recommended lineup for every player. A specific team recommendation depends on the characters you own and the battle you are trying to clear. Avoid treating old PvP rankings or a generic “best team” list as proof that a lineup will work for your Story stage.
