Yes, in some setups. A wired Nest Doorbell can ring a compatible wired indoor chime without a Nest speaker or display. A battery-powered doorbell installed wire-free cannot use a digital chime; for an indoor audible announcement, Google describes a Google or compatible speaker or display as the typical route. Phone notifications are a separate option, not a household chime.
What “ringtones” can mean
Nest Doorbell does not have just one kind of ringtone. The phrase may refer to the sound from an existing indoor doorbell chime, an announcement from a smart speaker or display, a sound at the exterior doorbell, or a notification on a phone. The answer depends on which alert you want and how the doorbell is installed.

Which indoor alerts work without a speaker or display?
| Setup | Indoor alert without a speaker/display? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Wired Nest Doorbell connected to a compatible wired chime | Yes | Google says wired models connect to the home’s doorbell system. Compatibility, power requirements, and whether the included chime connector is needed vary by model and region. See Google’s compatibility guidance. |
| Nest Doorbell (battery) installed wire-free | Not through a digital chime | Google says battery-powered doorbells cannot use digital chimes. For an indoor audible alert, wireless installations typically use a Google or compatible speaker or display. See Google’s chime settings guidance and chime troubleshooting. |
| Nest Doorbell (battery) connected to existing doorbell wiring | It depends on the installation | The battery model can be wired to a doorbell system in some compatible installations. Do not assume it behaves like a wire-free setup or that every existing chime will work; check the requirements for the exact model and region in Google’s compatibility guide. |
| Phone notifications | Yes, as a phone alert | Notifications can go to phones with access when enabled, provided the phone and doorbell are in the same Home. A phone alert is not the same as an audible chime inside the house; see Google’s visitor-announcement and notification guidance. |
What to check if you have a wired chime
Having wires does not by itself establish compatibility. Google lists different power requirements by doorbell generation and region, and some wired models require the included chime connector. Without a required connector, the chime may buzz or behave unexpectedly. Check the exact model and installation requirements before changing wiring or assuming a chime is faulty.
Using a speaker or display for an announcement
Google’s visitor announcements work on voice-assistant-enabled speakers or displays set up in the same Home as the doorbell. If Do Not Disturb is enabled on that speaker or display, visitor announcements are suppressed. Google’s guidance describes Google or compatible devices; it does not mean that every installation requires a Nest-branded speaker.

How to choose the right answer for your setup
- You have a compatible wired chime: The doorbell can ring it without a Nest speaker or display, subject to model, region, and installation requirements.
- Your battery doorbell is wire-free: It cannot use a digital chime. Use a compatible speaker or display for the typical indoor audible announcement, or rely on phone notifications.
- Your battery model is connected to wiring: Check the exact doorbell and chime compatibility rather than applying the wire-free limitation automatically.
- You only need alerts on your phone: Enable app notifications and verify both devices are in the same Home.
