Meta says the glasses use Horizon OS, the same operating system family as Quest, and operate as a standalone device. But they are not self-contained eyewear: the glasses are tethered to a required compute puck, which provides their processing connection. A PC is a separate option for PC VR or using the glasses as a display.
Are Meta VR Glasses actually standalone?
Yes, in the software sense. Meta Horizon OS Developers’ quick-start guide, updated September 9, 2026, says: “Meta VR devices are standalone — no PC required.” Native Horizon OS apps run without a desktop computer, including Android apps, immersive VR and mixed-reality experiences.

That does not mean the glasses work independently of all other hardware. Meta’s glasses guide, updated September 30, 2026, describes them as “a pair of lightweight glasses tethered to a compute puck.” The puck is essential to the glasses’ operation; it is not an optional PC accessory. So the useful distinction is no PC required, but a puck is.
What operating system do they use?
Meta VR Glasses use Horizon OS, built on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Meta lists Android 14 among the published specifications. The platform supports native Android apps, OpenXR, WebXR, and applications made with Meta’s Spatial SDK, alongside immersive VR and mixed reality.

That shared software foundation is intended to connect the glasses with the Quest ecosystem: Meta says they share Quest’s operating system, Store, payment platform, and SDKs. Developers can use Meta’s v207 SDKs before the hardware ships. Horizon OS does not include Google Mobile Services, however, so Android apps that depend on services such as Firebase, Google Auth, or Google Play Billing need suitable alternatives.
What can you do without a PC?
With the compute puck connected, the glasses are designed to run native Horizon OS software rather than merely act as a monitor for another computer. The announced software model includes flat Android-style panels, multiple windows, immersive 3D environments, spatial audio, passthrough, and apps using WebXR or OpenXR. Meta also describes gaze and hand interaction as the default way to use the glasses.

For Android developers, Meta says apps can make use of expanded screen space, multiple windows, gaze input, spatial audio, and passthrough. Quest developers can build on the shared OS and SDKs, though controller-first apps may need changes to work well with the glasses’ eyes-and-hands interaction model. Meta’s announced development resources include the Meta XR Simulator, Spatial Simulator, and WebXR tooling; Meta recommends testing on Quest 3 or Quest 3S where possible.

When would you still connect a PC?
A PC is relevant for a different use case, not as a prerequisite for native apps. Meta lists DisplayPort input on the compute puck, allowing the glasses to be used as a display for a Mac, Windows computer, or console. Meta also lists Meta Quest Link support for the product line, providing a route to PC VR.

Those options do not establish that the glasses can replace a laptop: DisplayPort lets them show a connected device’s output, while the standalone OS runs apps on the device. Meta’s published information describes a display use case, not a complete laptop replacement.

How are they different from Quest 3 and Quest 3S?
Meta’s published comparison gives Meta VR Glasses a 70° horizontal field of view, compared with 110° for Quest 3 and 96° for Quest 3S. The glasses’ lighter eyewear form is a different physical approach: Meta says they weigh about 100 grams, but that figure is for the glasses and should not be read as the weight of the glasses-plus-puck setup.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The interaction model also differs. Meta VR Glasses use gaze for primary targeting and a hand pinch for primary selection. Touch Plus controllers are supported but optional and sold separately, which matters for controller-first games and older apps. Quest 3 and Quest 3S are headset comparisons, not evidence that every Quest app will automatically provide an equally suitable glasses experience.
Do Meta VR Glasses come with controllers?
Meta says Touch Plus controllers are optional and sold separately. The default input method is controllerless: gaze targets an item and a pinch selects it, with hand tracking available. If an app relies on physical controllers, check its compatibility and interaction support rather than assuming gaze and hand controls will be a one-to-one substitute.
When can you buy Meta VR Glasses?
Meta announced the product at Connect 2026 and says it is scheduled to ship in spring 2027. The v207 SDKs are available to developers ahead of launch. The announcement establishes a ship window, not an exact retail date or a price.
Is Orion the same product?
No. Orion is a separate augmented-reality glasses prototype, not the announced Meta VR Glasses. In a September 2024 newsroom statement, Meta said Orion would not reach consumers and described it as work intended to inform a future consumer AR-glasses line. Its features, including its reported field of view and EMG wristband, should not be treated as specifications for the shipping Meta VR Glasses.
