Huawei’s own support sequence puts the app after Bluetooth pairing: “After the pairing is successful, open the AI Life app.” A September 17, 2026 hands-on report from Cadena SER describes the same choice: pair the earbuds, then either start listening immediately or install AI Life for additional customization.

What you can do with Bluetooth alone
Without AI Life, FreeBuds Neo function as ordinary Bluetooth earbuds. The operating system handles the connection, while the earbuds provide audio and call output after pairing.

- Play music, podcasts, videos, and other Bluetooth audio.
- Use them for phone or computer calls once the connected device selects them as the audio device.
- Reconnect through the operating system’s saved Bluetooth-device list when the earbuds are available.
The important distinction is between basic Bluetooth functions and configuration and maintenance functions. AI Life is not listed as a prerequisite for the initial connection or playback. It is an extra control panel for supported features.

How to pair FreeBuds Neo without AI Life
Use the operating system’s Bluetooth menu first. Do not install the app merely to complete this initial connection.
- Put the earbuds in pairing mode. Open the charging case and hold the case function button or touch-control area for at least two seconds. Continue until the indicator flashes white.
- Open Bluetooth settings. On your phone, tablet, or computer, open the normal Bluetooth settings screen and make sure Bluetooth is enabled.
- Select the earbuds. Choose the FreeBuds Neo name when it appears in the available-device list.
- Wait for confirmation. After the operating system reports a successful connection, play audio or place a test call.
Huawei’s support guidance explicitly describes opening AI Life after pairing, not before it. That ordering is why the app is optional for the connection itself.
If the earbuds do not appear
- Confirm that the case indicator is flashing white; holding the control for less than two seconds may not put the earbuds into pairing mode.
- Keep the case open while searching from the Bluetooth menu.
- Check that you are selecting the FreeBuds Neo entry rather than an unrelated nearby device.
- If the earbuds were previously connected to another device, temporarily disable Bluetooth on that device or remove its active connection, then repeat the pairing step.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on on the phone or computer and search again.
These steps address the pairing stage only. Installing AI Life is not a substitute for putting the case into pairing mode or choosing the correct Bluetooth entry.
What works after pairing
Music and other audio
Once the operating system shows FreeBuds Neo as connected, start playback in the app of your choice. The audio path is the same type of Bluetooth connection used by other wireless earbuds; AI Life does not need to remain installed for a listening session to continue.

Calls
The same paired connection can be used for calls. If a call uses the phone or computer’s built-in speaker instead, select FreeBuds Neo in that device’s audio-output controls. That selection is made by the operating system or calling application, not by AI Life.
Later reconnection
After the first successful pairing, the host device normally keeps FreeBuds Neo in its saved Bluetooth list. Opening the case and enabling Bluetooth lets you reconnect through that list. If you use several phones, tablets, or computers, connect to the one you want from its Bluetooth screen; AI Life is not required simply to establish that Bluetooth link.
What Huawei AI Life adds
Huawei lists the following AI Life functions for FreeBuds Neo and other supported earbuds. Availability of individual sound or noise features depends on what the particular earbud model supports.

The table describes convenience, configuration, and maintenance. It does not change the answer to the core question: Bluetooth playback and calls do not depend on having AI Life installed.

What you give up by skipping the app
Less battery information
AI Life can show separate levels for the left earbud, right earbud, and charging case. If you use only the operating system’s Bluetooth screen, you should not expect that same three-part view from Huawei’s documented workflow. You may still be able to use the earbuds normally, but you have less visibility into how much charge remains in each component.
Fewer customization controls
Huawei identifies gesture customization and, where supported, noise-control and sound-effect settings as app-managed features. Without AI Life, you use the earbuds’ existing behavior rather than changing those assignments or selecting those supported modes in the Huawei interface.
No in-app device search
The app includes a function for searching for the earbuds. A Bluetooth-only setup does not provide that Huawei search screen, so locating misplaced earbuds is less convenient.

No Huawei firmware workflow
Firmware checking and updating are listed as AI Life functions. If you never install the app, you do not have Huawei’s documented in-app route for checking the installed software version or applying an earbud update. This is the strongest reason to install AI Life temporarily even if you prefer not to keep it on your phone.

Less device information
AI Life can rename the earbuds and display their serial number and software version. Those details are useful when identifying a particular pair, reporting a support issue, or checking whether software changed after an update.
Bluetooth-only versus AI Life: which setup fits you?
Choose Bluetooth-only when
- You only need music, video audio, and calls.
- You want the smallest possible setup and do not need Huawei-specific controls.
- You are pairing with a computer or a secondary device and simply need the earbuds to appear as a Bluetooth audio option.
- You are testing the earbuds and want to confirm that basic hardware and audio work before adding any app.
Install AI Life when
- You need separate left, right, and case battery readings.
- You want to change supported gestures, noise controls, or sound effects.
- You switch among connected devices and prefer an in-app management screen.
- You want the earbud-search feature.
- You need to inspect software information or install firmware updates.
These choices are not permanent. You can pair and listen without AI Life, then install it later if a configuration or maintenance task requires the app. Conversely, removing the app after making changes leaves the Bluetooth connection available, but app-dependent controls and update access are no longer on the device.

- Start app-free. Open the case, hold the function button or touch area for at least two seconds until the indicator flashes white, and pair from the host device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Verify the essentials. Play audio and make a short call. Confirm that FreeBuds Neo is selected as the output and input device where relevant.
- Identify any missing requirement. If you only need playback, stop here. If you need battery details, gesture changes, supported sound controls, earbud search, or firmware maintenance, AI Life is the additional tool for those tasks.
- Install AI Life only when needed. After Bluetooth pairing, open the app and follow its device-management prompts. Huawei’s support wording places this step after a successful pairing.
- Use the app for maintenance, not as a pairing prerequisite. Check software information or apply an available firmware update through AI Life when you decide that maintenance is necessary.
Troubleshooting common misunderstandings
“The app is required because Huawei tells me to open it.”
Huawei’s instruction says to open AI Life after pairing. That is a post-pairing recommendation for management features, not a statement that the app must be present before Bluetooth can connect.
“I paired successfully but cannot hear music.”
Check the host device’s active audio output and select FreeBuds Neo. A successful Bluetooth pairing and an application’s current audio-output choice are separate settings. Also verify that playback is not paused or muted.

“I cannot see battery percentages.”
Battery visibility is one of the reasons Huawei provides AI Life. Pairing alone does not guarantee the detailed left/right/case display described for the app, so install AI Life if those readings are important to you.
“I want to change taps or sound modes.”
Those are app-managed controls where supported. Bluetooth-only operation gives you the connection, but not Huawei’s customization screen.
“Do I need the app on every device?”
No for basic playback: each phone, tablet, or computer can pair through its own Bluetooth settings. AI Life is useful on a device where you want to manage settings or update firmware; it is not a condition for another host device to play audio after pairing.
Evidence behind the answer
HUAWEI Support’s documented sequence is: “After the pairing is successful, open the AI Life app.” That wording establishes that ordinary Bluetooth pairing happens first.
