Human studies do not show that diet drinks reliably increase hunger or cravings. Some evidence finds no change in appetite, while a 2025 review of weight-management trials found a small reduction in hunger during weight loss and no significant effect during maintenance. Cravings are measured less consistently, so the evidence cannot establish that diet drinks either cause or curb them.
What studies say about hunger and cravings
“Diet drinks” include different beverages and sweeteners, so results for one product or formulation should not automatically be applied to every low- or no-calorie drink.

Hunger ratings are mostly neutral
A systematic review of trials testing an aspartame and acesulfame-K blend found no difference in subjective appetite in the four trials that reported it. The authors could not pool those appetite results because the available reporting and data were insufficient. Read the systematic review.

During weight maintenance, it found no significant hunger effect. That is not evidence that diet drinks reliably suppress appetite for everyone; the result concerns particular program settings and study outcomes. Read the 2025 review.

Cravings are a different question
Cravings are not interchangeable with hunger. The reviewed evidence does not measure cravings consistently enough to conclude that diet drinks cause them or reduce them. Likewise, eating fewer calories or seeing no change in body weight does not by itself tell us whether someone felt hungrier or craved particular foods.
Why the comparison drink matters
Studies comparing a low- or no-calorie sweetened drink with a sugary drink ask a different question from studies comparing it with water. A 2024 systematic review of adult randomized trials reported these pooled energy-intake estimates:

| Comparison | Difference in energy intake | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Non-nutritive sweeteners versus sugar | 175.26 kcal/day lower (95% CI 54.06 to 296.47 lower; I² = 61.19%) | A pooled trial result, not a predicted daily reduction for an individual. |
| Non-nutritive sweeteners versus water | 29.94 kcal/day difference (95% CI −70.37 to 130.24; I² = 34.98%); not statistically significant | The review did not find a clear energy-intake advantage over water. |
The 2024 review of energy and macronutrient intake reports measured energy intake, not direct proof of a change in hunger or cravings. The practical distinction is that replacing a sugary drink may reduce energy intake, while choosing a diet drink instead of water has not shown a clear advantage on that measure.
What longer-term weight evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s USDA/NESR review concluded that, in adults and older adults, low- and no-calorie sweetened beverage consumption compared with water or lower consumption was not associated with a change in body composition or obesity risk. The review graded the evidence as moderate and included literature published from January 2000 through May 2023; its cutoff does not include later studies. Read the USDA/NESR review.

- Cold and crispy with bold flavor that's never boring, Diet Coke soft drinks know how to keep things interesting
- Find some me time with a refreshing Diet Coke
- Reliable, timeless, and always ready when you want it, Diet Coke is a carbonated soft drink with 46mg of caffeine per 12 fl oz serving
- 12 pack, 12 fl oz cans of Diet Coke, a diet soda pop with no calories for all your go-to moments
Body composition and obesity risk are not appetite ratings. This finding therefore does not settle whether a person feels hungry or experiences cravings after a drink.
A weight-management trial has limits
The USDA/NESR materials also summarize a UK trial that compared non-nutritive sweetened beverages with water within a behavioral weight-management program for adults with overweight or obesity. High attrition limits how certain and broadly applicable its results are. A study in that program is not a universal test of ordinary diet-drink use. See the USDA/NESR review containing the SWITCH trial summary.

How to apply the evidence to your own choice
- If you are replacing sugary drinks: A low- or no-calorie sweetened drink may reduce energy intake compared with sugar-sweetened drinks, according to pooled adult trial evidence. That does not mean it will reduce your hunger or cravings.
- If you are choosing between a diet drink and water: The reviewed trials did not show a statistically significant energy-intake difference favoring non-nutritive sweeteners over water.
- If you notice a personal pattern: Pay attention to your own hunger and cravings rather than assuming the population-average findings predict your response. The evidence does not establish a reliable appetite effect for all people, drinks, or sweeteners.
