The winner depends on circumstances—not a simple rule that lions or hyenas always prevail. Who already controls the food, the animals’ numbers and group composition, and the location all matter. They share landscapes, too, but the evidence for direct food contests is stronger than the evidence for a general pattern of territorial battles between them.
How do lions and spotted hyenas compete for food?
Both species hunt and scavenge, so competition can arise before they ever meet: a lion and a spotted hyena may pursue the same prey. It becomes direct when one approaches a kill held by the other. Taking food caught or secured by another animal is called kleptoparasitism, and either species may attempt it.

The outcome varies across sites. In Etosha National Park, Namibia, Trinkel and Kastberger’s 2005 study reported that spotted hyenas hunted as well as scavenged, but could neither take lion kills nor stop lions taking their kills. The authors discussed the hyenas’ relatively small clan size at kills, their large territories, and adult male lions as possible explanations. These findings describe that study setting, not every lion–hyena population. Read the study record.
What determines who keeps a kill?
A long-term Kenyan study of seven hyena clans at two sites examined lion–hyena interactions over 27 years. Interactions occurred most often at fresh kills, especially when prey was larger and more hyenas were present. The species holding the food at the start of an encounter was more likely to retain it. As the researchers put it, “Possession of food at the beginning of an interaction positively affected retention of that food by each predator species.” Holekamp and colleagues’ 2017 study also found that adult male lions increased the likelihood of an interaction while reducing the likelihood that hyenas would acquire or retain food.

- Initial control: The animal or group that already has the food has an advantage in keeping it.
- Numbers and group makeup: More hyenas may be present at contests, while adult male lions can make it harder for hyenas to gain or hold food.
- Food context: Fresh kills are a common setting, and larger prey was associated with more frequent interactions in the Kenyan study.
- Place: Results from Kenya and Etosha differ in setting and observation; neither establishes a universal win rate.
Can a group of hyenas take a lion’s kill?
Sometimes hyenas cooperate to pressure lions in a behavior called mobbing. In the Kenyan study, a mob was defined as two or more hyenas approaching within 10 meters of a lion in a coordinated formation. More mobbing events during an interaction predicted a greater likelihood that hyenas would acquire food from lions. That association suggests group pressure can improve their chances; it does not mean hyenas routinely overpower lions or always take the kill.
The Etosha study also described hyenas mobbing lions near communal dens, even when food was not immediately at issue. The authors proposed that mobbing might distract lions from cubs or warn young hyenas to hide, but this was an interpretation rather than a confirmed motive. The Etosha study record.

Do lions and hyenas eat the same prey?
They have overlapping diets, particularly among large ungulates, which creates potential competition even without a carcass confrontation. A 2026 study in the Greater Etosha Landscape used DNA metabarcoding on 98 scat samples—69 from lions and 29 from spotted hyenas—and identified 19 vertebrate prey species. In that sample, the researchers found no significant difference in dietary niche breadth between the two species. Their diets were similar, though their most frequently detected prey items were not identical. This is a site-specific scat study, not a continent-wide census. Read the study in Scientific Reports.

They occupy overlapping landscapes, and encounters can happen within or along the edges of hyena clan territories. But shared range is not, by itself, evidence that lions and hyenas routinely fight to defend exclusive territories from one another. The studies summarized here document competition at food more directly than interspecific territorial defense.

A movement study examined fine-scale space use and possible avoidance competition between coursing hyenas and stalking lions in two ecosystems, showing that spatial interactions are a legitimate subject of study without establishing territorial battles as the main form of competition. A broader review of large-carnivore interactions likewise emphasizes that competition and coexistence vary across places and studies. Movement study · Review of large-carnivore interactions.

Lions and spotted hyenas compete through overlapping prey and contests over carcasses, but the balance is local and situational. Early possession favors the animal already holding food; numbers and the presence of adult male lions can change a contest; coordinated hyena mobbing can improve the hyenas’ odds. Findings from particular sites explain these interactions without supporting a universal claim that one species always wins.
