Data-broker removal services can remove some profiles from the brokers and people-search sites they cover, but a removal is a point-in-time result. Information may remain on uncovered sites, fail to match an opt-out request, or reappear when a broker republishes a profile. The strongest independent evidence currently available found mixed results: a 2025 study measured a 48.2% average removal success rate across four services. Treat these products as recurring privacy maintenance, not a one-time way to erase yourself from the internet.
What “keep my information off the web” really means
Removal services usually target commercial data brokers and people-search websites. Those companies assemble names, addresses, phone numbers, relatives, age ranges, property details and other attributes from public records, commercial sources and online activity, then publish or sell profiles. A service sends opt-out or deletion requests on your behalf and checks whether a profile is still visible.

That process has three different outcomes, which are easy to confuse:
- Request submitted: the service sent a request to a particular site.
- Removal confirmed: the provider checked and did not find the targeted profile at that time.
- Information absent everywhere: the same data is gone from every broker, public record, search result and other website.
Commercial services can sometimes achieve the second outcome for a covered site. They cannot establish the third. Optery’s Help Desk explicitly says, “No, in the majority of cases, Optery will not be able to remove all of your information from the Internet,” and explains that its service is limited to data-broker and people-search sites rather than every kind of website (Optery Help Desk).

What independent measurements show
The clearest direct effectiveness evidence is a 2025 paper, Measuring the Accuracy and Effectiveness of PII Removal Services. It tested four commercial services using the authors’ own participant sample and definition of a successful removal. The headline result was a 48.2% average success rate, but that average should not be treated as a prediction for an individual customer.
| Measurement | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Average removal success across four services | 48.2% | A study-specific average, not a guarantee or industry-wide rate. |
| Incogni result | 76.6% | The outcome measured under the paper’s method and sample; it is not a universal ranking. |
| Kanary result | 23.4% | Also specific to the study’s method and participants. |
| Variation among pairs of Optery users | 72.5 brokers on average | Shows how differently two customers of the same service can fare. |
The authors note that participants were mainly students at a U.S. university. That demographic and the study design limit how confidently the figures can be generalized to older customers, people in other countries, unusual names, complex family records or different broker inventories. The paper is useful evidence that results vary; it is not a promise that any service will remove a particular person.
The broader data-broker ecosystem helps explain the uneven outcomes. In a 2014 report, the Federal Trade Commission said brokers collected information from online and offline sources and that seven of nine brokers examined shared information with another broker. FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez described brokers as potentially knowing “as much – or even more – about us than our family and friends,” including purchases, affiliations and socioeconomic information (FTC, 2014). That finding is historical, not a claim that every broker operates identically today, but it illustrates why one successful opt-out does not break every data-sharing path.

More recent context comes from a 2026 preprint, Privacy Without Remedy: An Assessment of Data Broker Compliance with California Privacy Law. It reports that 9% of 522 registered California data brokers met the study’s full transparency criteria and describes friction in sampled consumer-request processes (2026 preprint). Because it is a preprint focused on California law and registered brokers, its percentage should not be read as a measurement of all U.S. brokers or all removal services.

How a recurring removal service works
Most services follow a repeating cycle rather than a single deletion event. The exact screens differ, but the operational pattern is generally:
- Create a personal-data inventory. You provide identifying details such as names, former addresses, phone numbers and email addresses so the service can distinguish your profiles from people with similar names.
- Locate matching profiles. The provider searches its covered broker and people-search list for records that appear to belong to you.
- Send opt-out or deletion requests. Requests may require email verification, identity details or a broker-specific form. A service cannot submit to a site it does not cover or cannot access.
- Check the outcome. A useful dashboard separates submitted, pending, confirmed removed, not found and failed states. “Request sent” is not the same as “profile gone.”
- Rescan and repeat. The provider searches again and resubmits where necessary because profiles can return or new records can appear.
Provider disclosures show why cadence matters. Incogni says it covers more than 420 brokers, processes recurring requests no more than every 60 days for public brokers or every 90 days for private brokers, and had processed more than 245 million requests. Those figures come from a Deloitte independent limited-assurance disclosure dated July 18, 2025. The assurance is limited to specified operational assertions; the numbers describe activity and scale, not a guarantee that your information will stay absent (Incogni’s Deloitte disclosure).
Optery’s Help Desk describes scanning and removal activity every 30 days. Its support article also warns that profiles can be republished, so a progress percentage may go backward or stall (Optery Help Desk, updated September 27, 2026). Monthly checks are therefore maintenance, not evidence of permanent deletion.

Why information can remain or come back
Coverage has hard boundaries
Every service works from a list of brokers and people-search sites. A profile on an excluded site, a local directory, a forum, a news archive or another kind of website is outside the standard process unless the provider offers a separate custom-removal option. A service can also lose access to a broker’s opt-out flow or be unable to verify a particular record.

Matching is imperfect
Providers need enough personal data to identify the right record. Common names, moves, name changes and shared phone numbers can produce false matches or missed profiles. Supplying more identifiers may improve matching, but it also means entrusting more sensitive information to the service. Read the provider’s explanation of storage, use and deletion before enrolling.
Brokers can republish profiles
A broker may rebuild a profile from another source after an opt-out. A completed removal today therefore has a time stamp in practical terms: it describes what the provider observed during its last check. Recurring scans are designed to catch that change; they do not prevent it.
One broker can feed another
The FTC’s 2014 finding that seven of nine examined brokers shared information with another broker shows how removal from one database may leave the same attribute available elsewhere. Removing a profile from a people-search page does not automatically erase the upstream public or commercial source that supplied it.
Legal and public records are a separate problem
Data-broker services are not a universal public-record suppression mechanism. Whether a court, property, professional or government record can be changed depends on the responsible record holder and applicable law. A service may help find a commercial copy while having no authority over the original record.

How to compare services without being misled by “coverage”
A large broker-count headline is not enough. Compare the operational details that determine what you will actually receive:
| Comparison point | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Which broker and people-search domains are included? Which countries, states or record types are excluded? | A high count is irrelevant if the sites displaying your profiles are absent. |
| Repeat work | How often are profiles rescanned and requests resubmitted? Does the schedule differ for public and private brokers? | Republishing makes one-time removal unreliable. |
| Outcome tracking | Does the dashboard distinguish submitted, pending, confirmed removed, not found and failed? | Clear states prevent a request from being mistaken for a deletion. |
| Custom removal | Can you submit a site outside the standard list? Is the work manual, conditional or separately charged? | Your most visible profile may be on an uncovered site. |
| Personal-data handling | What information must you provide? How is it stored, used and deleted? | Better matching can require handing over more sensitive identifiers. |
| Renewal and exit | Is the service a recurring subscription? What happens to monitoring after cancellation, and when do requests stop? | Stopping the subscription may also stop future detection of republished profiles. |
Current prices, renewal terms and cancellation procedures were not established in the available evidence. Verify them on the provider’s present checkout and terms pages before paying; do not infer a cost or an ongoing monitoring period from a marketing claim.
A practical way to use one
The following workflow keeps expectations and records realistic:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Record a baseline. Search your name with current and former cities, phone numbers and email addresses. Save the URLs and screenshots of profiles you want removed. This lets you distinguish a confirmed change from a profile you never found.
- Read the scope page. Make a list of included brokers, excluded categories and any limits on custom requests. If your target site is not covered, decide whether to submit its opt-out yourself.
- Minimize the data you submit. Provide the identifiers required to match you, but read the privacy policy and retention terms first. Use a dedicated email address if the provider’s process allows it, while recognizing that verification messages still need to reach you.
- Check statuses after the first cycle. Look for broker-level results rather than a single overall percentage. Follow up on pending or failed requests and note the date of each confirmation.
- Recheck independently. Search a sample of the original URLs after the provider marks them removed. A dashboard is useful evidence of the provider’s process, not proof that every copy has disappeared.
- Keep monitoring if recurrence matters. If your threat model includes stalking, harassment or identity exposure, a lapse in scanning can leave a republished profile undiscovered. Confirm what continues, if anything, after cancellation.
When paying is worthwhile—and when it is not
A service may be useful when
- You have many profiles across multiple brokers and do not have time to repeat dozens of opt-outs.
- You want a central record of requests, confirmations and failures.
- You accept that the benefit is reduced exposure over time, not guaranteed erasure.
Manual opt-outs may be sufficient when
- You found only a few profiles and each site provides a workable self-service process.
- You are comfortable repeating checks on a calendar and keeping your own evidence.
- You do not want to provide a third party with additional identity information.
Neither approach removes information from the entire web. The practical choice is between managing a finite list yourself and paying for recurring discovery and request handling, while accepting the same limits on scope and republishing.

What a realistic success standard looks like
Judge a service by reduced exposure across the specific sites that matter to you, not by a promise of being “invisible.” A strong result might mean that your home address no longer appears on the major people-search pages you identified, that the provider records confirmed removals with dates, and that later scans catch new listings. It does not mean that public records, unrelated websites or every broker copy have vanished.
The 2025 study’s 48.2% average, its 76.6% and 23.4% service-specific results, and the 72.5-broker variation among pairs of Optery users all point to the same operational lesson: outcomes depend on the person, the sites involved and the measurement method. Provider disclosures about 420-plus brokers, 60- or 90-day request intervals and 30-day scans explain how recurring work is organized, but none converts maintenance into permanence.
Use these services as one layer in a broader privacy plan: limit the personal details you publish, remove old accounts where possible, and treat every “removed” status as a dated checkpoint that needs occasional verification.
