Yes, a cooling mattress can help you feel less hot at the bed’s surface, but that does not prove it will improve your sleep. Cooling can mean a cool-touch cover, better airflow, moisture management, temperature buffering or active circulation. Simba describes several of these features in its Hybrid mattresses, but its headline “up to 4.4°C cooler” result is a controlled test of one foam layer—not a finding that sleepers run cooler all night or sleep better.
Do cooling mattresses actually work?
They can affect the temperature and feel of the sleep surface. Whether that translates into more comfortable nights depends on the mattress construction, the rest of the bed, the bedroom and the sleeper. A cool-to-the-touch sensation or a material-temperature result is not the same thing as evidence of better sleep.

A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis examined bedding strategies, including mattresses, toppers and pillows, for adults aged 18–64. It screened 3,454 articles and included nine studies. The authors found no differences between bedding strategies and controls in the sleep measures they assessed: sleep-onset latency, sleep efficiency, time in sleep stages, wake after sleep onset and total sleep time. The evidence certainty ranged from very low to low. Some included studies suggested bedding could affect body cooling acutely, but the authors said more research was needed. Read the review record on PubMed.
That cautious result does not establish that no one benefits from a cooler-feeling bed. It means claims about comfort, material temperature and sleep outcomes should be kept separate. The review was not a trial of Simba mattresses.

What does “cooling” mean in a mattress?
The label can refer to different mechanisms, and they do not all do the same job. The National Sleep Foundation describes several approaches in its overview of bedding and temperature management; the article discloses support from Purecare, a Gold sponsor of its 2026 Sleep Awareness Week campaign. Read the National Sleep Foundation’s overview.
- Airflow: Open structures and breathable materials are intended to let heat and moisture move through the bed rather than remain trapped.
- Moisture wicking: Fabric moves moisture away from the skin. This can affect how clammy or comfortable the bed feels, but is not active refrigeration.
- Cool-touch fabrics: These can feel cool when first touched; that sensation alone does not show how the surface performs over a full night.
- Phase-change materials: These buffer temperature swings by absorbing and releasing heat; they are not active cooling systems.
- Active water- or air-circulating pads: These use circulation to adjust the bed’s microclimate and are a distinct, typically adjustable technology category.
The mechanisms are not interchangeable. When comparing a mattress or an accessory, check what it is designed to do and whether the supporting evidence measures a material property, subjective comfort or sleep outcomes.

What Simba says about cooling in its Hybrid mattresses
Simba’s current Hybrid Pro and Hybrid Luxe product pages describe Simbatex foam, Aerocoil microspring layers and a soft cover; the Luxe page also describes a bamboo-and-wool blend. The pages describe HeatRelease as graphite strips. HeatRelease is an optional upgrade on the Luxe, so check the selected model and configuration rather than assuming it is included. Product details can change. See Simba’s Hybrid Pro details and Hybrid Luxe details.
How to interpret the 4.4°C claim
Simba states “up to 4.4°C cooler” for the upper foam layer of a Hybrid Ultra mattress with HeatRelease compared with that layer without HeatRelease, under controlled laboratory conditions. The claim is about that foam layer in that test. It is not a whole-mattress temperature result, a measurement of a sleeper’s body temperature, an all-night personal result or evidence of improved sleep quality.

What Simbatex is intended to do
Simba describes Simbatex as open-structure foam designed to encourage airflow, with graphite intended to help excess warmth flow away from the body. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions of material design and intended function, not independent head-to-head evidence that the mattress improves sleep. Read Simba’s Simbatex explanation.
Simba’s Pro page also refers to Intertek tests in May 2025 comparing airflow in nine memory foams from three UK manufacturers with Simbatex, using ISO 7231 Method B. The page’s “over 5x more airflow” is a marketing statement; it does not provide a precise numerical ratio in the material available here. Treat it as a manufacturer-reported material comparison, not a sleep-outcome result.

How to decide whether a cooling mattress is worth considering
Start with the problem you want to solve. If the bed feels stuffy or damp, airflow and moisture management may be relevant. If you want a cooler first-touch sensation, look for a clearly described cover material. If you need active temperature adjustment, a circulating pad is a different option from a mattress with passive materials.
- Identify the source of discomfort. Consider whether heat seems to come from the mattress surface, sheets or protector, sleepwear, the room or another factor.
- Match the mechanism to the problem. Look for specific descriptions such as breathable construction, moisture-wicking fabric, phase-change buffering or active circulation rather than relying on the word “cooling” alone.
- Check the whole bed. A protector, sheets and sleepwear can affect the microclimate. The Sleep Foundation also discusses bedroom temperature and bedding as relevant to sleep comfort. Read its overview of bedroom temperature and bedding.
- Assess comfort and support separately. A cooling feature cannot establish whether a mattress suits your preferred feel or support needs.
- Read test claims narrowly. Note what was measured, under what conditions, and whether the result is a lab material test, a manufacturer description or independent sleep-outcome research.
- Compare practical trade-offs. Consider adjustability, maintenance and price for the actual mattress or accessory you are considering. The cited evidence does not establish a universal cooling-mattress winner.
Can a protector or cooling pad be a better first step?
If you do not want to replace a mattress, breathable or cooling sheets and protectors can change the materials closest to your body. A water- or air-circulating mattress pad is another category for readers seeking adjustable temperature control. These options have different mechanisms and practical considerations; the cited review does not establish that any one will improve sleep outcomes for everyone. Assess them by the same standards: what they do, what evidence supports the claim, how they fit with the rest of your bed, and the ongoing care they require.
