Indonesian authorities released 20 green sea turtles off Serangan Island, Bali, on October 13, 2026, after rescuing 22 from an unmanned boat. Two turtles remained sick and under treatment, according to the Associated Press. Police described the incident as a suspected smuggling attempt; no conviction or arrest was reported.
Why were 20 green sea turtles released in Bali?
The turtles were among 22 live green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) found aboard an unmanned boat off Serangan Island on October 10. After residents reported suspected turtle-smuggling activity, Bali police went to investigate, but the suspected smugglers had left by the time officers arrived. Authorities coordinated the animals’ handling with the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Agency, according to the Indonesian National Police’s October 12 account.

Authorities checked the turtles at a conservation center on Serangan before taking them to the shore for release on October 13. Bali police official Gusti Agung Purnama Wirahadi told the Associated Press that two of the 22 animals were still sick and needed treatment. The other 20 were released into the ocean.

How this incident differs from Bali’s June–July turtle case
A separate case involved 21 green turtles seized in the Pegametan/Sumberkima area in June 2026 and released at Serangan on July 7. Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries said those animals were quarantined and observed at the Turtle Conservation and Education Center, received veterinary examinations, and were released after a technical assessment found them fit. Those details concern the June–July case, not the 22 turtles found in October. For the October release, the Associated Press reported final checks at a conservation center but did not identify it as the Turtle Conservation and Education Center.

What the reported sea-turtle statistic means
The Associated Press cited a 2022 global study by Arizona State University researchers that reported 56% of sea turtle killings occurred during the period from 1990 to 2020. That is a historical finding covering those years, not an annual rate or a current estimate.
