Google says Gemini Enterprise data, including prompts and outputs, is not used to train Google generative-AI models or models for another customer without permission.
Those commitments do not automatically cover an employee’s personal Free, Plus or Pro account, a personal Gemini Apps session, or every retention and review process. “Not used for training” is only one part of a company’s data-risk decision. Storage duration, administrator access, human review, safety investigations, connected-app retrieval, geography and the wording of your organization’s agreement must be checked separately.

This is why a company should not treat a consumer app’s privacy setting as evidence about an enterprise contract. The same brand can have materially different rules for a personal account, a managed workspace and an API request.

What “not used for training” does—and does not—promise
A no-training commitment addresses a specific purpose: using your prompts, uploaded files, generated answers or similar content to improve a general model. It does not necessarily mean that the provider never stores the data, never scans it for abuse, or prevents your employer’s administrators from seeing it.

- Retention: A provider may keep prompts and outputs for a stated period so the service can operate, investigate abuse, meet legal duties or recover from an outage.
- Human review: Safety investigations, quality checks or submitted feedback may put a conversation in a review queue even when routine model training is disabled.
- Feedback: A thumbs-up, thumbs-down report or bug ticket can attach the conversation to an improvement or research workflow.
- Administration: A company’s workspace owners may have audit, export, retention or e-discovery access under the service’s enterprise controls.
- Connected applications: A model may retrieve excerpts, summaries, generated media or inferences from mail, storage or other connected systems. That retrieved material can have a different handling rule from the underlying mailbox or drive.
- Location and contract: Data residency, subprocessors, sector addenda and regional law can change the practical answer.
Ask your privacy or security team to read the data-processing agreement and product documentation, not only the marketing phrase “no training.”
ChatGPT and OpenAI: business defaults versus personal workspaces
Managed business and API use
OpenAI’s business-data policy states: “By default, we do not use data from ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Edu, ChatGPT for Healthcare, ChatGPT for Teachers, or our API platform—including inputs or outputs—for training or improving our models.” For a company, that means a managed business seat or an API project is the relevant baseline—not an employee’s privately created account.
OpenAI also says qualifying API customers can opt in through the API dashboard to share data for model improvement. An API integration should therefore be reviewed for its project-level setting, account owner, logging configuration and any separate contract terms before production data is sent.
Personal Free, Plus and Pro workspaces
OpenAI says data sharing is enabled by default in personal Free, Plus and Pro workspaces. The account holder can turn off Improve the model for everyone in ChatGPT’s data-control settings. OpenAI says new conversations after the opt-out are not used for training. That setting is useful for personal privacy, but it is not a substitute for giving confidential company material to a managed business workspace with an approved administrator and contract.

Practical ChatGPT decision
- Identify whether the conversation is in a company-managed Enterprise, Business, Edu, Healthcare or Teachers workspace, an approved API project, or a personal workspace.
- For API traffic, verify the current data-sharing choice in the API dashboard and document who can change it.
- Check retention, abuse-monitoring, audit and administrator-access controls in the organization’s agreement.
- Block personal accounts from receiving regulated or proprietary material unless your policy expressly allows them.
Claude and Anthropic: a commercial no-training default with feedback exceptions
Commercial products
Anthropic’s commercial privacy article, published August 18, 2026, says: “By default, we will not use your inputs or outputs from our commercial products (e.g. Claude for Work, Anthropic API, Claude Gov, etc.) to train our models.” The commitment covers the normal commercial service path, including API prompts and responses, subject to the agreement and applicable law.
Feedback and bug reports
Anthropic explains that an explicit feedback submission or bug report can allow the related conversation, including content associated with the feedback, to be used for analysis, research and training as permitted by law. This is an important operational exception: a user can change the handling of one conversation by attaching it to a report, even though routine commercial traffic has a no-training default.
Team or Enterprise owners can disable member thumbs-up and thumbs-down feedback through organization settings. If your policy forbids sending proprietary conversations for improvement, disable those controls or require a review process before members submit feedback.
Practical Claude decision
- Use the commercial workspace or approved API account, not a personal account, for company content.
- Decide whether members may submit feedback containing conversation text; configure the organization accordingly.
- Document how Anthropic’s retention, deletion, support access and regional provisions interact with your own records policy.
Gemini: Enterprise protections are separate from personal Gemini Apps
Gemini Enterprise under Workspace terms
Google’s administrator documentation for Gemini Enterprise says: “Your data—including prompts, outputs, and training—isn’t used to train Google generative AI models or models for any other customer without your permission.” For an organization using Gemini through the applicable Workspace terms, this is the business baseline. Administrators should still confirm the exact edition, enabled features, data region, retention period and audit scope.

Personal Gemini Apps and Keep Activity
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, updated October 13, 2026, says collected data can be used to provide, maintain, improve and develop services, including generative-AI models. Some collected data is reviewed by human reviewers, and Google warns users not to enter confidential information they would not want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve services.
When Keep Activity is on, Gemini Apps activity involving connected apps can be used to improve Google services, including training generative-AI models. Google says Gemini does not train directly on an entire Gmail inbox or Drive. However, summaries, excerpts, generated media and inferences used to answer a prompt may be collected and used under the applicable policy. That distinction matters when a user asks Gemini to summarize a confidential mailbox or document library.
Temporary chats and Keep Activity off
Google says temporary chats are not used to train AI models. With Keep Activity off, chats are retained for 72 hours for response and safety purposes. If the user submits feedback, the associated content can still be reviewed and used to improve Gemini. Google also says reviewed feedback and associated conversations may be retained for up to three years.

Practical Gemini decision
- Confirm that the account is using Gemini Enterprise under the organization’s Workspace terms, rather than a personal Google account.
- Inventory connected apps and decide whether Gemini may retrieve mail, files, calendars or other business records.
- Set Keep Activity and feedback rules centrally where the product permits, and train users not to paste secrets into personal Gemini Apps.
- Verify retention and deletion behavior for prompts, outputs, retrieved excerpts and reviewer-accessible copies.
Business and personal AI privacy settings: the differences that matter

A company checklist before employees enter confidential material
- Name the exact product and edition. Record whether the workflow uses ChatGPT Business or Enterprise, an OpenAI API project, Claude for Work, the Anthropic API, Claude Gov, Gemini Enterprise or a personal app.
- Read the current commercial terms. Confirm the no-training language, permitted opt-ins, subprocessors, geography and sector-specific addenda.
- Separate model use from storage. Obtain the retention schedule for prompts, outputs, uploads, logs, backups and deleted accounts.
- Map review paths. Ask when safety teams, support staff or human reviewers can see content and how long reviewed material is kept.
- Control feedback. Decide whether users may attach conversations to thumbs-up, thumbs-down or bug reports; disable or restrict those features where necessary.
- Audit connected apps. List every mail, drive, calendar or business system the assistant can query. Determine whether retrieved excerpts and generated summaries follow the same policy as the source system.
- Use identity and access controls. Require single sign-on, managed devices, least-privilege roles, offboarding and audit logs where available.
- Define prohibited inputs. Keep passwords, private keys, unreleased credentials, unnecessary personal data and regulated records out of any workflow that has not passed review.
- Recheck after product changes. These policies can change by date, geography, feature and contract. Assign an owner to review notices and administrator documentation.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“The app says it is private, so every account is covered.”
Correct the assumption by identifying the account type first. A personal ChatGPT or Gemini session is governed by consumer controls, not automatically by your company’s business agreement.

Check human-review, abuse-monitoring, support and legal-access provisions. A no-training promise does not erase those operational paths.

Anthropic and Google both describe feedback-related review or improvement paths. Remove confidential text before reporting an issue or use an administrator-approved process.
What to ask your provider or procurement team
- Does the commitment cover inputs, outputs, uploaded files, retrieved connected-app content and metadata?
- Is any opt-in enabled now, and who can enable it later?
- What events permit human review, and are reviewers employees, contractors or subprocessors?
- How long are active data, backups, abuse records and feedback-linked conversations retained?
- Can administrators export, search or inspect employee conversations?
- Where is data processed and stored, and which regional or industry terms apply?
- What happens when an account is suspended, an employee leaves or the contract ends?
Bottom line for a company
ChatGPT’s named business products and API, Claude’s commercial products, and Gemini Enterprise all publish default restrictions against training on customer content. That makes them materially different from personal AI accounts. The safe operating rule is to use a managed business tier or approved API, lock down feedback and connected apps, document retention and review paths, and prohibit confidential input in consumer accounts. Treat “no training” as one contractual control—not as a complete data-protection program.
