Yes—but what an air purifier can do depends on the pollutant. A correctly sized HEPA purifier can reduce airborne particles, including smoke and some allergens; cooking odors and other gases need activated carbon or another gas-targeted filter. Purifiers work best as a supplement to removing pollution sources and ventilating with clean air, not as a replacement for either.
What an air purifier can—and cannot—remove
Indoor air can contain particles, such as fine smoke, and gases, including some compounds released during cooking. A portable air cleaner generally treats one room or area; a central HVAC filter can serve more of the home. Neither removes every pollutant. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says the most effective steps are to reduce or remove pollutant sources and ventilate with clean outdoor air, using filtration to supplement those measures. EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home explains these limits and options.

Particles versus gases
A HEPA filter is designed to capture particles that pass through it. It can help reduce airborne allergen particles and smoke particles, but it does not automatically remove gases or smells. For gases and cooking odors, look for activated carbon or another filter medium specifically designed for gas removal. EPA notes that gas filters do not have a widely used performance-rating system; a substantial quantity of adsorbent material matters. A thin carbon sheet should not be assumed to perform like a large gas-phase filter.

It may help, but results vary. EPA summarizes multiple studies in which portable HEPA air cleaners improved one or more allergy or asthma symptoms, while noting that improvements were not always substantial and did not necessarily cover every symptom. That supports using a purifier as one part of an allergy-management plan—not treating it as a cure or a substitute for reducing the allergen source.

For example, a room purifier may reduce some airborne particles while it runs, but it does not remove allergens settled on surfaces or prevent new particles from entering the room. Pair filtration with practical source control and cleaning appropriate to the allergen involved. The EPA guide does not establish a single symptom-reduction percentage that applies to everyone.
What CADR do I need for wildfire smoke?
Choose a purifier with a smoke Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) suited to the actual room. CADR measures particle-cleaning delivery; it is not a rating for odor or gas removal. EPA says CADR is generally measured at the highest fan speed, and smoke CADR represents the smallest of the common smoke, dust, and pollen particle categories. For fine smoke particles, compare smoke CADR—not just a broad room-size claim—with your room.

EPA’s wildfire cleaner-room guidance recommends smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet. For a 300-square-foot room, that rule of thumb implies at least 200 cfm smoke CADR. It is guidance for a cleaner-air room, not a guarantee, and ceiling height and room dimensions also affect sizing. See EPA’s wildfire and indoor air quality guidance.
EPA’s home guide also gives estimated CADR figures based on an 8-foot ceiling. These are agency estimates, not universal performance guarantees:

| Room area | EPA estimated CADR (cfm) |
|---|---|
| 100 sq ft | 65 |
| 200 sq ft | 130 |
| 300 sq ft | 195 |
| 400 sq ft | 260 |
| 500 sq ft | 325 |
| 600 sq ft | 390 |
Use the smoke CADR and room dimensions together: the two-thirds rule is a practical smoke-specific floor, while the EPA table provides broader estimated sizing values for rooms with standard 8-foot ceilings. If ceilings are higher or the space is open to adjoining areas, a unit sized only to the floor area may be inadequate.
Will an air purifier remove cooking smells?
Not reliably if it has only a particle filter. Cooking can release both particles and gases: HEPA filtration can capture particles, while odors and gases require activated carbon or another gas-targeted medium. Even then, EPA notes there is no widely used performance rating for gas removal, so a label alone cannot establish how much smell a unit will remove.

(Note: For significant amounts of pet hair on floors or fabric surfaces, we recommend use other cleaning products.)
- 3-Stage Advanced Filtration: Our air filter combines a high-efficiency purification filter with 3 layers to can effectively filter out the impurities in the air. This high-performance system delivers thorough air purification, creating a healthier living environment for you and your loved one. (Note: The filter needs to be replaced every 3 to 6 months, and must not be cleaned with water or other liquids.)
Reduce cooking pollution at its source first: use an effective range hood or other exhaust ventilation when available, and ventilate with clean outdoor air when conditions permit. A purifier can supplement those steps by filtering particles and, if it contains a substantial gas-adsorbing medium, some gases. No general guidance establishes that a purifier will eliminate every cooking odor.

How to get useful performance without making the purifier impractical
- Size for the room: Check the smoke CADR against the room’s floor area and ceiling height rather than relying only on a manufacturer’s generic coverage label.
- Run it long enough: Higher fan speeds and longer operating time generally increase particle filtration. The practical choice is the highest speed and runtime you can sustain, accounting for noise and electricity use.
- Keep the right filters available: Confirm that compatible replacement HEPA and, where needed, activated-carbon filters are available. Replacement intervals and costs vary by product; there is no universal interval established by EPA guidance.
- Use HVAC filtration only if compatible: EPA advises MERV 13, or the highest-rated filter the HVAC system can accommodate. A more restrictive filter can affect airflow. Check the system manual or ask an HVAC professional if compatibility is unclear.
Choose a purifier that does not generate ozone
Avoid portable air cleaners and HVAC devices that intentionally produce ozone. Ozone irritates the lungs, and EPA says ozone concentrations within public-health standards do not effectively remove viruses, bacteria, mold, or other biological pollutants. For help checking emissions, EPA points consumers to the California Air Resources Board and Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers lists of units tested to emit little or no ozone; these are emissions checks, not proof that a model will remove every pollutant. EPA’s ozone-generator guidance describes the concern.

Which approach fits the problem?
| Concern | Useful filtration approach | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Airborne allergens | Portable HEPA purifier sized for the room | Studies summarized by EPA report improvement in one or more symptoms, not consistent or substantial relief for everyone. |
| Wildfire smoke particles | Portable purifier with adequate smoke CADR | Use actual room area and ceiling height; EPA’s two-thirds CADR rule is a smoke-cleaner-room rule of thumb. |
| Cooking particles and odors | Particle filtration plus activated carbon or another gas-targeted medium | There is no widely used gas-removal performance rating; source control and ventilation remain important. |
| Multiple rooms or whole home | Compatible central HVAC filter, potentially MERV 13 | Use only the highest rating the system can accommodate without compromising airflow. |
