How to Investigate Suspicious Outbound Traffic from a SonicWall SMA 1000

Start in the appliance’s AMC log viewer: open Monitoring > Logging, set the incident time window, and compare system messages with the network proxy/tunnel and web proxy audit logs. Then correlate the records with active sessions; if the logs leave important questions unanswered, use AMC’s network tools to capture a trace. Suspicious outbound traffic is a reason to investigate, not by itself proof of compromise.

The steps below follow the SonicWall SMA 1000 Administration Guide for release 12.5.0. Check your installed release and use its matching documentation before following release-specific procedures; do not assume instructions for the SMA 100 Series or another product apply.

1. Define the incident window and preserve context

Before interpreting a log entry, record when the traffic was observed and the timezone, along with the available source and destination details and what triggered the investigation. A timestamp without its timezone can make correlation with other systems unreliable.

  • Note the observed time range and the information available about the connection, such as addresses, service, or reported transfer.
  • Preserve relevant log exports and any packet capture according to your organization’s incident-handling process.
  • Use the installed release’s guide for the exact log-export procedure; the 12.5 guide documents viewing, sorting, searching, filtering, and exporting logs.

2. Review AMC logs by what they can establish

In AMC, go to Monitoring > Logging. Search and filter around the incident interval, and compare records rather than treating one alert as a complete account. Each log type answers a different question:

SonicWall Global VPN Client - License - 10 Licenses (01-SSC-5311) - Secure IPsec VPN Connectivity for Remote Work & Site-to-Site Access
  • SonicWall Global VPN Client - License (01-SSC-5311)
  • Secure IPsec VPN Access: Enables encrypted remote connections to SonicWall firewalls using robust IPsec tunneling protocols.
  • Consistent Remote Access Experience: Delivers a reliable and high-performance VPN connection for employees working remotely or from branch sites.
  • Compatible with Windows OS: Designed for Microsoft Windows environments, with simple installation and configuration.
  • Policy-Based Access Control: Enforce connection rules and restrict access to resources based on user identity and endpoint status.
Log type What it can help establish
System message log Service processing and diagnostic information, including detailed access-control decisions.
Management audit log Configuration changes and the identity of the administrator who made them.
Management access log Who accessed management functions, when, and from what network location.
Network proxy/tunnel and web proxy audit logs Access-service connection activity, including user and transferred-data context.

Use timestamps to align records across these categories. A connection record may describe access activity, while a system message can add service or access-control context; management logs can show whether an administrator action or configuration change is relevant to the same period.

3. Correlate the activity with sessions

Use AMC’s session-monitoring tools to compare log entries with session context. The 12.5 guide says sessions can be filtered by user name, realm, community, access agent, and traffic load, among other criteria. Match what the available session details show against the time window and connection activity in the logs; do not assume that a matching user name alone explains the traffic.

The guide also describes troubleshooting and terminating sessions. Whether to end a session depends on the incident and its operational impact, so make that decision through your organization’s incident procedure rather than treating termination as an automatic response.

4. Capture a network trace if the logs are not enough

AMC includes network troubleshooting tools such as ping, traceroute, DNS lookup, routing-table viewing, and tools for capturing and filtering network traces for backend connectivity troubleshooting. A trace can provide additional evidence about a connection when log records do not answer the question. It is not, on its own, proof that activity was malicious.

  1. Consult the guide matching the appliance’s installed release for the capture and filter procedure.
  2. Capture only what is needed to investigate the connection.
  3. Preserve the resulting capture under your organization’s evidence-handling process and correlate it with the log and session timeline.

5. Check central logs without assuming forwarding was enabled

The SMA 1000 12.5 guide index includes documentation topics for sending messages to a syslog server and integrating with Splunk, including log searching. These topics do not establish that central forwarding was configured on a particular appliance or that the relevant event was retained. Confirm setup, supported fields, and procedures in the detailed documentation for the installed release before relying on a central record.

6. Verify advisories for the exact appliance and release

The available product documentation describes investigative tools; it does not establish a universal indicator that identifies suspicious outbound traffic as malicious. Nor does it identify a current advisory, patch, or remediation that applies to an unspecified appliance and software version. Check the exact SMA 1000 model and installed release against current SonicWall security advisories before applying an incident-specific indicator or making a version-specific change.
