Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT are not competing, all-or-nothing Mac assistants. Apple Intelligence is built into supported Mac experiences; ChatGPT can be enabled as an optional extension within some of them, or used separately through OpenAI’s Mac app. Which route fits depends on the task, your Mac, and where you want requests processed.
Three ways to use AI on a Mac
It helps to distinguish the Apple system from the two ways ChatGPT can enter the picture:

- Apple Intelligence without ChatGPT: Apple’s integrated features use on-device models for many tasks. Requests that need more processing power may use Apple’s Private Cloud Compute.
- Apple Intelligence with the ChatGPT extension: In supported experiences such as Siri and Writing Tools, you can choose to send a request to ChatGPT. Apple lets you enable or disable the extension and choose whether to sign in.
- The standalone ChatGPT app: OpenAI’s macOS app is a separate way to use ChatGPT. It has its own system requirements and does not make every ChatGPT capability available inside Apple’s integration.
These paths differ in features, data handling, and compatibility; enabling one does not mean you must use the others.

Apple Intelligence features
Apple’s October 2024 macOS Sequoia announcement described Writing Tools that can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text, as well as Siri features including text input and more flexible conversational interaction. That announcement is a dated baseline, not a complete list of what is available in 2026. Apple’s support guide says availability varies by language and region, and some features may not be available everywhere. Check Apple’s current feature and language availability information for your macOS version and location.

ChatGPT through Apple
OpenAI describes using ChatGPT through Apple’s integration to ask questions, help write messages, or analyze an image or document. Apple identifies supported entry points including Siri and Writing Tools. The integration is not a promise that every feature in the standalone ChatGPT app is also available through Apple.
Standalone ChatGPT app
The Mac app provides a separate ChatGPT experience from Apple’s system features. OpenAI’s compatibility page establishes the app’s operating-system and processor requirements, but the sources cited here do not provide a feature-by-feature comparison with Apple Intelligence.

How privacy differs by route
Apple Intelligence processing
Apple says many Apple Intelligence models run on the device. For requests requiring more processing power, it says Private Cloud Compute processes the request and uses the data only to fulfill it, without storing or sharing it with Apple. This is Apple’s description of its system; it is distinct from a request sent to OpenAI through the ChatGPT extension.
ChatGPT extension without an account
When you use ChatGPT through Apple without signing in, Apple says the request, attachments, and limited context—such as time zone, country, device type, language, and feature—are sent to ChatGPT. Apple says your IP address is obscured, though general location is provided. OpenAI must process the information to fulfill the request and, according to Apple, must not store the request or response unless required by law, or use them to train its models. See Apple’s ChatGPT Extension & Privacy notice.

ChatGPT extension with an account
If you link a ChatGPT account, Apple says the account’s OpenAI privacy settings and policies apply. OpenAI says data preferences affect how interactions are processed and stored; whether conversations are saved or used to improve services depends on your choices and the feature you use. OpenAI provides controls including “Improve the model for everyone” and Temporary Chat. Do not assume that every account-linked conversation is treated identically: review your account’s current settings and OpenAI’s data-usage information.
Apple also says it collects limited information about ChatGPT requests and responses for service operation and fraud prevention. Its privacy notice says opting in to Improve Siri and Dictation or Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence may allow additional request data, such as audio and transcripts, to be logged by Apple.

System requirements: Apple Intelligence vs. the ChatGPT app
The requirements are separate. Apple’s October 2024 announcement states that Apple Intelligence on Mac requires a Mac with M1 or later. OpenAI’s standalone app requirements are different:
| Option | Mac requirement established by the source | Other availability factors |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Intelligence | Mac with M1 or later, according to Apple’s October 2024 announcement. | Software version, language, region, and individual feature availability can affect access; consult Apple’s current availability information. |
| Standalone ChatGPT for macOS | macOS 14 and either Apple silicon M1 or better or an Intel processor, according to OpenAI’s app requirements. OpenAI says older operating systems will not receive a compatible version. | The stated app requirements do not establish Apple Intelligence eligibility. |
That makes the distinction especially relevant to Intel Mac owners: OpenAI documents standalone app support for Intel processors, while Apple’s stated Apple Intelligence threshold is M1 or later. A Mac that can run the ChatGPT app is not necessarily eligible for Apple Intelligence.

Enable, control, or turn off the ChatGPT extension
Apple’s Mac support guide covers enabling ChatGPT, signing in or using it without an account, requiring confirmation before Siri sends a request, and disabling the extension. Labels and confirmation options can differ by Siri AI mode and macOS release, so use the instructions for the version installed on your Mac rather than relying on a fixed menu path. Start with Apple’s Mac guide to setting up ChatGPT.
Before enabling it, decide whether you want to link an account and whether you want Siri to ask before sending requests. You can turn the extension off if you no longer want Apple’s supported experiences to route requests to ChatGPT.
Which option should you choose?
- Choose Apple Intelligence without ChatGPT if you want to use Apple’s integrated features without sending a prompt to OpenAI through the extension.
- Enable the ChatGPT extension if you want ChatGPT available from supported Apple experiences such as Siri or Writing Tools, and are comfortable with the relevant data-handling path.
- Use the standalone app if you want a separate ChatGPT app and your Mac meets OpenAI’s requirements. Its compatibility is independent of Apple Intelligence eligibility.
Check the current language, region, and macOS availability for the specific Apple feature you intend to use. Then choose whether to use the extension, whether to sign in, and whether to require confirmation before Siri sends a request.
