Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Yes—usually. An AI or smart washing machine can generally run its built-in wash programs from the control panel even when it has never been connected to Wi‑Fi. The appliance’s motor controls, safety systems and any sensor-based automation installed in its firmware continue to operate locally.
Wi‑Fi is mainly needed for connected services such as phone-app control, remote start, notifications, cloud recommendations, downloadable cycles, energy dashboards and some washer-to-dryer handoffs. The exact boundary differs by model, region and software version, so the manual for the specific washer remains the authority.

What “AI” means in a washing machine
“AI washing machine” is not a single technical category. Manufacturers use the label for several different features:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Local sensing: sensors in the washer estimate factors such as load weight, fabric type, soil level or detergent concentration, then adjust water, time or detergent automatically.
- On-device automation: the appliance’s firmware chooses settings or manages a cycle without sending data to a server.
- Cloud services: an app or online account supplies laundry recipes, recommendations, diagnostics, energy reports or downloadable programs.
- Connected coordination: the washer exchanges information with a phone, a dryer or a manufacturer’s cloud platform.
Only the last two categories inherently depend on an internet connection. A washer can therefore advertise AI features while still performing its ordinary wash cycles completely offline.

What normally works without Wi‑Fi
With the network disabled, most machines still provide the functions you would expect from a conventional washer, subject to the model’s manual.
| Function | Offline behavior | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in wash programs | Usually available from the physical dial, buttons or touchscreen. | These are programs stored in the appliance. A cycle offered only as an app download will not be available. |
| Start, pause and cancel | Normally controlled at the washer. | Some models disable local starting while a special remote-control mode is active; follow the model’s instructions. |
| Door lock and safety controls | Remain local. | Water-level, temperature and door-lock protections do not require a router. |
| Load or soil sensing | Works when the sensors and algorithms are built into the washer. | The manual may identify this as Smart Wash, automatic dosing or a similar named feature. |
| Automatic water, detergent or time adjustments | Can operate locally when driven by onboard sensors. | Cloud recommendations are a separate feature and may be unavailable. |
| Some appliance-to-appliance links | May work through a local radio or appliance protocol. | Do not assume every washer-to-dryer handoff is local; some require Wi‑Fi and an account. |
For example, Samsung documentation distinguishes its local Smart Wash sensing from SmartThings app functions. The washer can use its own sensors to calculate water and detergent and monitor soil, while app control and monitoring follow the connected-account path.
What usually stops working without internet access
Disconnecting Wi‑Fi does not usually disable the washer itself; it removes services that need a phone, account or manufacturer server.
- Remote start and pause: you cannot start a cycle from another location if the washer cannot reach the app service.
- Status monitoring: cycle progress, remaining-time updates and “laundry finished” alerts cannot be delivered to a phone.
- Cloud notifications: leak, maintenance or completion messages that are routed through an online account will not arrive.
- Downloaded cycles: programs obtained from an app or cloud library are unavailable if they were not already stored on the washer.
- Online recipes and recommendations: suggested settings based on an account, history or cloud database require the connected service.
- Energy dashboards and connected energy modes: data collection, reports and some optimization modes are Wi‑Fi-dependent.
- Cloud diagnostics: remote troubleshooting and automatic service reports generally need the app connection.
A router outage, an account logout and a deliberate decision never to pair the machine can therefore have the same practical result: local cycles continue, while app-based features disappear.

Samsung’s SmartThings features are different. The product documentation states that a Wi‑Fi connection and a Samsung account are required for SmartThings services. Scheduling, laundry recipes, notifications and energy monitoring use that connected path. Samsung also identifies AI Energy mode as requiring Wi‑Fi and a Samsung account.
Samsung reports that AI Energy mode can reduce energy use by up to 70% in an internal test on a specified model and cotton cycle. That is a manufacturer test claim for the stated conditions; it does not show that the mode works offline or that every load will achieve the same reduction.

LG washers with Direct Pairing
LG documents a useful distinction between local and internet-based communication. Its Direct Pairing feature can transfer a washer’s completed-cycle information to a paired dryer without Wi‑Fi or other setup. The dryer can use that information to help select a drying program, making this a local appliance-to-appliance function rather than remote control through the internet.
LG’s remote-control instructions describe the opposite case. When remote mode is enabled, the wash can be started only with the smartphone app. When remote mode is disabled, the appliance can be operated directly. In practice, a user who never connects the app can still use the physical controls, but must check whether a particular remote mode setting changes local-start behavior.
Bosch washers using Home Connect
Bosch describes selected washer-and-dryer pairs that share wash-cycle details so the dryer can select an appropriate drying program. Home Connect pairing requires Wi‑Fi and an internet-capable network, so that connected handoff should not be treated as an offline capability.

This illustrates why a feature name is not enough. Two brands may both advertise automatic washer-to-dryer coordination while using different communication paths. Look for explicit wording such as “without Wi‑Fi” or, conversely, a requirement to scan a QR code and connect the appliance to Home Connect.

The most important buying question is not whether a washer says “AI”; it is which programs are physically stored in the machine.
- Open the exact model manual, not just the retailer’s summary page.
- Find the cycle table and mark programs selected from the washer’s dial, buttons or display.
- Look for a separate section called downloadable cycles, app cycles, laundry recipes or additional programs.
- Check whether a downloaded cycle remains usable after the account is logged out or the appliance is disconnected.
- Confirm that the everyday programs you need—such as cotton, synthetics, delicates, quick wash and drain/spin where offered—are listed as onboard cycles.
If a program is listed only in the app, assume it is unavailable offline unless the manufacturer explicitly says the washer stores it locally.
What happens after a router outage or account logout
During a temporary Wi‑Fi outage
The washer should normally finish a cycle that was started at the control panel. Local safety functions, the door lock and the motor do not depend on the router. App status may freeze, and completion notifications will be delayed or lost until the connection is restored; the exact recovery behavior is model-specific.
After logging out of the manufacturer account
Account-linked controls, history, recipes and energy reports can stop immediately. Physical operation generally remains available, but a model that is left in an app-only remote mode may require that mode to be disabled before the control panel can start a new load.

After changing routers or passwords
The washer may remain fully usable as a local appliance while its connected features show as offline. Re-pairing normally requires the manufacturer app, the new network credentials and, on some products, a QR-code or Bluetooth setup process. Do not reset the appliance merely because the app is offline; a reset can erase settings or stored preferences.
Buyer checklist: verify the exact model before purchase
Use these questions with the product manual or manufacturer support page:
- Can a cycle be started, paused and completed from the physical panel with Wi‑Fi disabled?
- Which named cycles are built in, and which are downloads?
- Does the “AI” function use onboard sensors, cloud recommendations, or both?
- Are remote start, notifications, diagnostics and energy reports optional connected services?
- Does washer-to-dryer communication use a local link or require Wi‑Fi, an internet connection and an account?
- What happens after a router outage, account logout or app removal?
- Are requirements different for your country, product variant or firmware version?
Save a copy of the manual for the exact model number. Retail listings often combine specifications for several regional variants, while the offline behavior can differ between them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using an AI washer without ever connecting it
You can treat the machine as a conventional washer with additional automation:
- Install and level the appliance according to the manual.
- Load laundry, add detergent and select one of the cycles shown on the physical controls.
- Enable any onboard sensing or automatic-dose option that is available locally.
- Start the cycle at the washer and use its display or indicator lights for progress.
- When the cycle ends, open the door only after the local lock releases.
Do not expect app-only recipes, remote monitoring or cloud energy reports in this setup. If a local appliance-to-appliance feature is important, confirm that it is explicitly documented as Wi‑Fi-free; otherwise, plan to connect both appliances.

Common misunderstandings and fixes
“AI” means the washer needs the internet
Not necessarily. Sensor-based decisions can run in firmware. Check whether the manual describes sensors operating inside the appliance and whether it lists an account or Wi‑Fi requirement beside the feature.
Every cycle shown in an advertisement is available offline
Marketing pages may show the full app ecosystem. Separate built-in cycles from downloadable ones in the manual before deciding whether the machine meets your needs.
A dryer handoff is always local
LG documents a Wi‑Fi-free Direct Pairing example, but Bosch Home Connect requires Wi‑Fi and an internet-capable network. The communication method must be checked brand by brand and model by model.
Recommended Free Tools
The washer is unusable because the app says “offline”
Try the physical controls first. If local starting is blocked, look for a remote-control or app-only mode and disable it as instructed. If the panel itself is unresponsive, that is a separate appliance fault rather than normal loss of internet service.
Bottom line for different buyers
- You want reliable basic washing: choose a model whose required cycles are built into the appliance. It should work without Wi‑Fi.
- You want sensor-based automation: verify that load, soil or detergent sensing is listed as an onboard function.
- You want phone control and alerts: plan on Wi‑Fi, internet access and usually a manufacturer account.
- You want downloaded recipes or energy analytics: treat these as connected services unless the manual states otherwise.
- You want automatic dryer coordination: confirm whether the specific pair uses local Direct Pairing or a Wi‑Fi-based platform.
There is no universal offline specification for “AI” washers. The safe conclusion is that normal, panel-controlled washing usually survives without Wi‑Fi, while cloud and remote conveniences do not. The exact manual, model number, region and current software requirements decide the exceptions.
