Yes. An AI coding agent should normally use a separate, least-privilege identity and run inside a policy-controlled workspace that limits files, processes and network destinations. Separate credentials reduce the damage from a stolen or misused token; isolation prevents repository instructions, malicious dependencies or generated commands from reaching unrelated data and systems.
The right boundary depends on what the agent can read, change, execute and access. A low-risk repository with no secrets may fit a local operating-system sandbox. Untrusted pull requests, proprietary data or deployment access generally justify a container, virtual machine or ephemeral cloud workspace, plus human approval for irreversible actions.

The security boundary is the agent’s runtime
OpenAI’s sandbox-security guidance states: “Agent-generated code can access the files, credentials, and network available to its environment.” That is the practical rule behind every design decision. An agent does not need malicious intent to cause a breach: a repository instruction can tell it to print an environment variable, a dependency install can run a post-install script, or a generated command can copy data to an unexpected host.

Give the agent only the files, tools and destinations required for the current task. Treat the shell, editor, tool integrations and model-generated code as one execution environment. If that environment can read a developer’s home directory, use an unrestricted cloud CLI, or make arbitrary outbound requests, a prompt injection has a much larger blast radius.

Why a separate identity matters
A developer’s normal GitHub token, cloud key or application API key often carries permissions accumulated over months. Supplying it to an agent turns every command the agent can run into an operation performed with that authority. A distinct agent identity lets you grant only the repository and API permissions needed for one task, then revoke them without disrupting the developer’s account.
Separate credentials do not make an unsafe workspace safe. If the agent can read the credential, it may be able to copy it into source code, logs, an image, a generated patch or an external request. Credentials therefore need both narrow permissions and a protected delivery mechanism.
Why a separate workspace matters
Workspace isolation limits the consequences of code execution. The agent should be able to read and write the checked-out repository and a task-specific scratch directory, but not unrelated repositories, home-directory files, SSH keys, operating-system credential stores or cloud configuration. It should also have only the CPU, memory, disk and process capacity appropriate to the task.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFilesystem controls and network controls must be designed together. Anthropic’s engineering guidance puts it plainly: “effective sandboxing requires both filesystem and network isolation.” A read-only filesystem without egress controls can still leak data through the network. An allowlisted network with broad filesystem access can still expose local secrets.

What can go wrong without these boundaries?
Prompt injection in a repository
README files, issue descriptions, test fixtures and comments can contain instructions intended for an agent rather than a human. A malicious pull request might ask the agent to run a diagnostic command that uploads environment variables, or to disable a security check before committing. The agent should treat repository text as untrusted input, not as an authorization to cross the workspace boundary.
Dependency and build execution
Package managers and build tools routinely execute scripts. Installing a dependency, running a test, generating documentation or compiling native code can therefore perform arbitrary local operations. Keep package caches and build outputs inside the sandbox, restrict package registries to approved hosts where practical, and require review before adding or updating dependencies.
Tool and MCP-server risk
Every tool available to an agent expands its authority. Review the tools and Model Context Protocol servers you expose, validate their arguments, and monitor for changes to their definitions. A tool that appears to “search issues” may also be able to fetch arbitrary URLs or modify tickets. Expose the smallest useful set and log each invocation.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Accidental destructive actions
An agent can delete files, rewrite history, rotate configuration or trigger a deployment while trying to satisfy an otherwise reasonable request. Keep production publishing, deployment, credential changes and other irreversible operations behind a separate approval boundary. Approvals are the decision point; sandboxing is the technical boundary. You need both.

How to design separate credentials
- Create a distinct agent identity. Use a machine user, workload identity or executor key created for the coding-agent workload, not a developer’s personal token. Name it so its owner and purpose are obvious in audit logs.
- Scope access to the current task. Grant read access to the required repository and write access only to the branch, fork or artifact location the task uses. Add API permissions individually; do not grant organization-wide administration “for convenience.”
- Prefer short-lived credentials. Issue a token for the duration of a job or a short session, then rotate or revoke it. A task-scoped token limits the useful lifetime of a leaked value and makes incident response more predictable.
- Keep long-lived secrets outside the workspace. Store them in a vault or secrets manager. Do not place them in source files, images, logs, environment snapshots or instruction files that the agent can read.
- Broker approved calls. A trusted proxy can attach a credential only when the destination, method and parameters match an approved policy. The agent receives a capability to request an operation, not the underlying secret. OpenAI documents a pattern in which the executor receives an environment key that can connect environments while the application API key remains outside; injecting the stored secret into the environment would still expose it to generated code.
- Separate read and write capabilities. Use read-only credentials for discovery and analysis. Issue write or deployment capability only for a later, explicitly approved step.
- Audit and revoke. Record issuance, use, failed authorization, rotation and revocation. Test that revocation actually prevents further calls, and remove unused identities rather than letting them accumulate.
OWASP guidance specifically recommends blocking access to SSH keys, cloud CLI configuration, production credentials and organization secrets. Never assume that hiding a file name is protection; if the process can traverse the directory, the agent may eventually find the value.
What an isolated workspace should enforce
| Control | Minimum policy | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Filesystem | Permit the repository and task scratch space; deny home directories, SSH folders, credential stores and unrelated repositories. | Prevents local discovery and tampering outside the task. |
| Network egress | Disable networking when unnecessary; otherwise allowlist required hosts or route requests through a policy proxy. | Limits data exfiltration and contact with untrusted services. |
| Processes | Restrict privilege escalation, background daemons, host mounts and access to the container or VM runtime. | Reduces escape paths and persistence. |
| Resources | Set CPU, memory, disk and process limits, with timeouts for jobs. | Contains denial-of-service behavior and runaway builds. |
| Tools | Expose only reviewed shells, package managers, editors and MCP servers; validate arguments. | Each tool is an additional authority boundary. |
| Approvals | Require a human decision for production, deployment, credential, history-rewrite and other irreversible operations. | Prevents automation from becoming unreviewed change control. |
| Audit | Log commands, tool calls, file changes, network requests, approvals and credential events. | Enables investigation and proves which action occurred. |
Choosing the strength of isolation
| Boundary | Suitable use | Important limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Local OS-level sandbox | Trusted, low-risk repository with no secrets or production access; files limited to the project and network tightly controlled. | Lighter-weight than a container or hypervisor. A host-configuration mistake can expose more of the developer’s account. |
| Dev container | Repeatable builds, dependency-heavy projects and normal application development. | Containers share a host kernel. Avoid privileged mode, broad host mounts, host sockets and unrestricted network access. |
| Virtual machine | Untrusted pull requests, sensitive source, proprietary data or operations requiring a stronger host boundary. | More setup and resource overhead; images and management interfaces still need patching and access control. |
| Ephemeral cloud workspace | Short-lived jobs requiring clean environments, centralized policy and disposable credentials. | Review provider isolation, data retention, egress policy and how source and logs are handled. |
The choice should follow the threat model, not the product name. Stronger isolation is warranted when an agent handles untrusted code, organization-wide secrets, unrestricted package installation, deployment credentials or data subject to strict confidentiality requirements.
What current agent products demonstrate
GitHub Copilot
GitHub documents different defaults for local and cloud execution. Until local sandboxing is enabled, shell commands Copilot runs execute directly on the machine with the same access as the user account. Its cloud sessions run in isolated, ephemeral Linux environments with filesystem, network and credential controls. Confirm the effective policy for the specific mode you use; the word “Copilot” alone does not establish a sandbox.
Claude Code
Claude Code’s sandbox model uses operating-system primitives to limit configured directories and hosts. Cloud Git operations can be routed through a proxy that attaches a scoped token outside the sandbox. This illustrates the broker pattern: the agent can perform an approved operation without receiving a broadly usable repository credential.

OpenAI Codex
OpenAI separates the environment connection key from the application API key in its documented executor pattern. The key point is architectural: the runtime gets only the capability required to start or connect to an approved environment, while the more sensitive application credential remains outside it. If a secret is injected into that environment, generated code can still read it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a dev container enough?
Sometimes, but not automatically. A container is a useful filesystem and process boundary when it runs as an unprivileged user, mounts only the project, avoids the host’s Docker or container socket, and has a restricted network. It is not sufficient if it mounts the home directory, passes through SSH keys, runs privileged, exposes cloud credentials or permits arbitrary egress.
For a trusted repository without secrets, a carefully configured container may be an appropriate baseline. For hostile pull requests or production access, use a VM or ephemeral cloud workspace, keep credentials outside the guest, and require approval before any operation that leaves the test environment.

- Classify the task. Record whether the repository is trusted, whether it contains regulated or proprietary data, whether dependencies are untrusted, and whether deployment or production systems are in scope.
- Define the file policy. Start with one checkout directory and one scratch directory. Explicitly deny home, SSH, cloud-configuration and unrelated-repository paths.
- Define the network policy. Turn networking off for purely local editing. For builds or dependency retrieval, allowlist the package registry, source host and service endpoints required by the task. Route sensitive calls through a proxy where possible.
- Issue task credentials. Create a short-lived identity with the minimum repository and API permissions. Keep the issuance service outside the workspace and make revocation automatic at job end.
- Expose tools deliberately. Start with read-only inspection and tests. Add write operations, package installation or deployment tools only when the task requires them, and validate their arguments.
- Run a harmless verification. Ask the agent to list its permitted directories, attempt to read a denied path, resolve an unapproved host and perform an approved repository operation. Confirm that denials are logged and that the approved operation succeeds.
- Add approval gates. Require a human review for merges, force pushes, production changes, secret access, infrastructure changes and external publication.
- Review the logs and clean up. Check commands, file modifications, tool calls and network requests. Destroy the workspace, revoke credentials and delete temporary artifacts when the task ends.
Common failures and fixes
The agent cannot install a dependency
Check whether networking is disabled or the registry is missing from the allowlist. Prefer adding one approved host through the proxy rather than granting unrestricted internet access. If the package requires a post-install script, review that script before allowing execution.
Best Value
Git operations fail inside the sandbox
The workspace may lack a credential or may intentionally block direct access. Use a scoped repository token or a brokered Git proxy, and grant write permission only to the intended branch or fork. Do not solve the error by mounting the developer’s entire SSH directory.
Tests need services or background processes
Provide disposable, network-isolated service containers or a dedicated test VM. Set resource and time limits, and prevent those services from reaching production endpoints. Capture logs without including environment variables or tokens.
A command needs a secret at runtime
Do not add the secret to a file the agent can read. Use a narrowly scoped brokered request, an external secret-injection mechanism that withholds the value from the agent process, or a human-operated step after the agent has produced and reviewed its output.
A local setup appears isolated but still reads sensitive files
Inspect mounts, environment variables, inherited processes and credential helpers. Check the effective policy rather than the configuration you intended to apply. Remove broad mounts, unset inherited secrets, disable host sockets and repeat the denied-path test.
Questions to answer before approval
- Which exact files can the agent read and write?
- Can it reach the internet, and which hosts are allowed?
- Is its identity separate from the developer, short-lived and task-scoped?
- Can any tool or dependency execute code outside the intended workspace?
- Which actions require a human approval, and are they logged?
- Will the workspace and all temporary credentials be destroyed after the task?
If those answers are not documented, assume the agent has more authority than the task requires and tighten the boundary before granting access.
Bottom line
Separate credentials and isolated workspaces are the normal safe default for AI coding agents. Use least-privilege, short-lived identities; keep secrets outside the runtime; restrict both filesystem and network access; review tools and dependencies; and place production or irreversible operations behind approval. A lighter local sandbox can fit low-risk work, while sensitive or untrusted tasks deserve a container, VM or ephemeral cloud environment whose policy you have verified in practice.
