An 8,000 Hz mouse reports input more often than a 1,000 Hz mouse, but the practical difference depends on your game, PC, display, and mouse. Try higher settings in the games you play; keep one only if it feels useful and runs smoothly.
What does mouse polling rate measure?
Polling rate, also called report rate, is how many times per second a mouse sends input updates to the computer. At 1,000 Hz, the nominal interval between reports is 1 millisecond; at 8,000 Hz, it is 0.125 milliseconds. The interval difference is 0.875 milliseconds.

That calculation describes the reporting schedule, not total click-to-photon latency—the time from your physical input to the resulting image on screen. The rest of that path includes the mouse, operating system, game, rendering, and display. A faster reporting schedule cannot by itself guarantee that the whole system responds 0.875 ms sooner.
| Polling rate | Nominal reports per second | Nominal interval |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 Hz (1K) | 1,000 | 1 ms |
| 2,000 Hz (2K) | 2,000 | 0.5 ms |
| 4,000 Hz (4K) | 4,000 | 0.25 ms |
| 8,000 Hz (8K) | 8,000 | 0.125 ms |
The intervals are derived from the stated rates. Comparing 1K with 8K gives a maximum theoretical 0.875 ms reduction in waiting for a report in a simplified comparison—not a measured reduction in end-to-end latency.

When might 8K polling make a visible difference?
More frequent reports provide more frequent movement samples. That can make cursor or aim tracking feel smoother in some circumstances, particularly during fast movement on a high-refresh display. Whether those extra samples matter on screen also depends on the game’s input handling, frame rate, monitor refresh, mouse firmware, and the rest of the PC.
There is no established typical-player perception threshold or demonstrated general win-rate improvement in the sources available for this topic. Igor’sLAB’s 2025 mouse comparison generally measured mice at 1,000 Hz and used a Razer Viper 8K at 8,000 Hz for its 8K example. It cautions that measurement tolerance, USB interrupts, display response, and operating-system variation affect end-to-end latency. That is a specific test, not a universal result across mice, games, PCs, and monitors.

In short, the interval arithmetic explains what changes technically; it does not establish how noticeable the change will be to you. Frame rate and display refresh are among the factors that shape whether a smaller input-report interval can translate into a perceptible difference.

CPU load and frame pacing
More frequent reports can increase USB traffic and processing work. Logitech says some users may see FPS drops above 1 kHz, and Corsair notes that higher rates can carry a higher CPU cost. An average-FPS counter may not reveal every problem: watch for uneven frame times, stutter, or instability while playing.

Wireless battery life
High-rate wireless operation can use more power and shorten runtime. The size of that effect varies by mouse and usage, so there is no universal battery-life multiplier. Consider whether any tracking benefit is worth charging more often on your particular device.
Device, connection, and game support
An “8K” label does not necessarily mean every connection mode supports 8,000 Hz. Check the mouse’s supported rates, software, firmware, and receiver requirements. USB port and host-controller behavior, receiver placement, and operating system can also affect stability. Corsair recommends a direct motherboard-linked USB port for its products; its system guidance applies to supported Corsair devices rather than serving as a universal minimum. ASUS says its ROG Polling Rate Booster is for compatible ROG devices and should be kept close for best operation; it is not a universal adapter.

Polling-rate test accuracy
Browser-based polling-rate checkers can fluctuate or misreport at high rates because the browser may not process reports accurately. Logitech notes this limitation. For Razer’s testing guidance, connect directly to a PC USB port and follow the movement instructions in its test software; even a test result does not establish lower total system latency.
How should you choose a polling rate?
- Check what your setup supports. Confirm the mouse’s stated rates and the required software or receiver. Do not assume every wired or wireless mode supports its maximum rate.
- Use a stable baseline. Start at 1,000 Hz, or at the setting that is already reliable on your system.
- Compare available steps in your real games. If offered by your mouse, try 2,000, 4,000, and then 8,000 Hz. Use the same game and display mode for each comparison so you can judge the change fairly.
- Check more than average FPS. Look for stutter, frame-time spikes, or other instability as well as any movement smoothness you can actually perceive. For wireless mice, also consider runtime.
- Keep the highest setting that earns its costs. If a higher rate feels no better, causes instability, or makes battery life inconvenient, return to a lower stable setting.
For most players, 8K polling is an optional setting to test—not a requirement for responsive gaming. The sensible choice is the highest supported rate that remains smooth and offers a worthwhile benefit on your own setup.
