DNS Zone Erasure: How to Make Automated Decisions from Deliverability Evidence

DMARC results and reports can inform DNS cleanup, but they are not a safe delete trigger. Identify the exact target, confirm authorization, check dependencies, and choose safeguards suited to the operation.

Deliverability evidence alone is not a safe trigger for DNS erasure. A defensible pipeline first identifies exactly what would be deleted, confirms authorization, and checks DNS dependencies and security effects. SPF, DKIM, DMARC results and reports can inform that review, but they do not establish that a mail stream is safe, unwanted, or ready for removal.

What “DNS zone erasure” can mean

The phrase is ambiguous. A system that treats every cleanup as the same delete operation can remove far more than intended. Identify the target before evaluating deliverability evidence:

Operation What changes Relevant standard and consequence
Delete or change resource records One or more records within an existing DNS zone RFC 2136 specifies DNS UPDATE operations for adding and deleting resource records. The zone itself remains.
Delete an EPP domain or host object An object used through the Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) to publish DNS information RFC 9874 addresses EPP domain and host object deletion. Removing an object can affect associated name servers or delegated domains.
Remove a zone from an authoritative DNS service The zone as a whole in that DNS service The supplied standards do not define a universal provider-specific workflow for this operation. Determine the service’s effects and dependencies before acting.

These are different targets and should be represented as different actions in a pipeline. In particular, deleting a DNS record under RFC 2136 is not the same as deleting an EPP object under RFC 9874.

How DMARC evidence relates to deliverability

How Does DMARC Work? DMARC evaluates whether a message passes authentication with alignment between the domain in the visible From address and an authenticated domain. A DMARC pass requires an aligned SPF pass or an aligned DKIM pass. DMARC also lets domain owners publish a policy and receive reports about authentication activity.

#1 Best Overall

A pass is not an inbox-safety verdict

DMARC answers a narrower question than whether a message is trustworthy or wanted. RFC 9989 states: “a DMARC pass by itself does not guarantee that delivery to the recipient’s inbox would be safe or desirable.” A passing message can still be unwanted; a failed message does not, on its own, prove that its associated DNS records should be erased. RFC 9989, the current DMARC specification, is an IETF Standards Track RFC published in May 2026. It obsoletes RFC 7489 and RFC 9091.

Reports show activity; they do not prescribe deletion

DMARC aggregate reports can help a domain owner identify sending sources, authentication outcomes, and changes in use. RFC 9989 says proper consumption and analysis of these reports are essential to a successful DMARC deployment; it also advises domain owners to periodically review SPF records against current needs. Treat reports as monitoring evidence to investigate and interpret—not as a delete instruction or a universal deliverability score.

NIST SP 800-177 Rev. 1, published in February 2019, also recommends SPF, DKIM, and DMARC among mechanisms for trustworthy email. That guidance supports using authentication controls; it does not supply an automated DNS-erasure threshold. NIST SP 800-177 Rev. 1.

A staged decision process for an automated pipeline

Use evidence to route a decision through checks, not to make a single score-triggered deletion. The standards describe relevant safeguards but do not prescribe a complete pipeline or implementation for every DNS provider.

  1. Resolve the target and requested action. Classify the request as a record-set change, EPP domain or host object deletion, or removal of a zone from an authoritative DNS service. Record the exact object and intended change; do not translate an ambiguous “erase the zone” request directly into a destructive API call.
  2. Confirm authorization and scope. Verify that the requester is authorized to make the change and that the proposed action matches the request. For deletion affecting clients or other parties, account for appropriate notification and explicit client requests where relevant to the EPP operation.
  3. Inspect dependencies and expected impact. Check what uses the records, zone, or EPP object, including associated name servers and delegated domains. Assess whether deletion could disrupt resolution, mail authentication, or control of a hostname. RFC 9874 warns that unsafe host-renaming practices can create hijacking risks.
  4. Interpret mail evidence in context. Examine SPF and DKIM results, DMARC alignment, and available aggregate reports to understand authentication activity and current sending needs. A DMARC pass is not a general safety or inbox-placement verdict, and reports do not establish a deletion cutoff.
  5. Choose the least broad suitable operation. If the need is to change a record, prefer a record-level update over removing a whole zone or provisioning object. If the requested scope is object or zone deletion, apply the checks and recovery planning appropriate to that broader action.
  6. Use safeguards, then verify the result. Where RFC 2136 updates are appropriate, its prerequisite mechanism can condition the update on expected prior state. The UPDATE operation is atomic in this respect: if any prerequisite fails, no update operation takes place. After an approved change, verify both the intended DNS state and any dependent resolution or authentication behavior.

What makes record updates safer than broad deletion

RFC 2136 supports adding or deleting resource records within a zone. Its prerequisites allow an update to proceed only when the prior state matches expectations, reducing the risk of applying a change to an unexpectedly altered zone. If any prerequisite fails, the update operation does not take place. This is a useful control for a record change; it is not a substitute for authorization, dependency review, or safeguards for a different operation such as deleting an EPP object or removing a provider-hosted zone.

Additional safeguards for EPP object deletion

RFC 9874 is BCP 244, published in September 2025, and its guidance is specifically about deleting EPP domain and host objects. It discusses approaches intended to limit unwanted effects, including maintaining a sacrificial name server host object or using deletion with restore options based on explicit client requests, alongside relevant deletion details and notification to affected clients. These are not universal DNS-provider procedures. RFC 9874 also says other practices described in the document are not recommended because of their side effects, so an implementation should follow the standard’s guidance rather than assume any host-renaming or deletion workaround is safe.

What the standards do not establish

The cited standards do not provide a universal number of failed deliveries, DMARC-report score, inactivity period, or waiting interval that authorizes automatic erasure. Nor do they define a single pipeline suitable for all DNS services. A numeric cutoff would therefore be an operator policy choice, not a threshold established by these standards. Any policy should be separately justified and should not bypass authorization, dependency, impact, and recovery checks.

For each proposed action, a pipeline should preserve the distinction between evidence about mail authentication and authority to change DNS. It should also make clear whether the action can be rolled back, who approved it, which dependencies were reviewed, and what will be checked after execution. Those controls are especially important when the operation extends beyond a narrowly scoped record update.
