That makes DLSS 5 a potentially more convincing image-quality upgrade, not a proven one yet. There is no independent Hogwarts Legacy comparison available before the announced release. The headline distinction is therefore availability versus potential. DLSS 4 has game-specific evidence and a functioning implementation. DLSS 5 has a broader rendering goal, but its Hogwarts Legacy implementation and performance have not yet been independently measured.
What DLSS 4 adds to Hogwarts Legacy
NVIDIA’s January 30, 2025 Hogwarts Legacy update added the complete DLSS 4 suite. In practical terms, that suite contains four separate technologies rather than one universal “quality” switch.

Transformer Super Resolution
Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render. DLSS 4 uses transformer-based models that NVIDIA says preserve more detail while the camera or player moves. The stated goals include reducing ghosting on fine objects, retaining surface detail and producing a more stable image than earlier temporal models.
This matters in Hogwarts Legacy because foliage, fences, hair, spell effects and distant geometry move across the screen constantly. A still screenshot can look excellent while motion reveals trails or unstable detail; the transformer model is intended to address that motion problem.
Ray Reconstruction
Ray Reconstruction replaces parts of the traditional denoising process used with ray-traced effects. NVIDIA says the DLSS 4 update improves ray-tracing stability and reduces noise. In Hogwarts Legacy, that is most visible in reflective surfaces and scenes with difficult indirect lighting, where denoising errors can otherwise shimmer or crawl as you move.

DLAA
DLAA uses the same type of AI reconstruction at the display’s native resolution instead of lowering the internal render resolution for an upscaling performance gain. It is the image-quality-first option: useful when your GPU already meets your target frame rate and you want cleaner edges without the resolution reduction associated with Super Resolution.
Multi Frame Generation
Multi Frame Generation creates multiple additional frames between conventionally rendered frames. It is the feature behind the largest DLSS 4 performance claims in this game, and it requires a GeForce RTX 50-series GPU. An RTX 40 card can benefit from the broader DLSS 4 image-quality updates, but it does not meet the requirement for Multi Frame Generation in Hogwarts Legacy.

Ray-traced reflection improvements
The same update improved ray-traced reflections, including higher-detail reflections and reflections on bodies of water. Those changes are separate from simply raising a resolution preset: the update changes the reflection result as well as the reconstruction and denoising used to display it.
What DLSS 5 is supposed to change
NVIDIA describes DLSS 5 as a real-time 3D-Guided Neural Rendering model. Its stated purpose is to add neural-rendered lighting and materials, extending DLSS beyond reconstruction and frame generation into the appearance of the scene itself.
That distinction is important. DLSS 4 primarily helps the renderer recover detail, stabilize ray-traced data and generate additional display frames. DLSS 5 is presented as a model that can make lighting and material responses look more photorealistic. It could make stone, metal, skin, cloth and illuminated environments appear different even when the underlying scene geometry is unchanged.
NVIDIA announced DLSS 5 support for Hogwarts Legacy on November 5, 2026, for GeForce RTX 50 Series, GeForce NOW and RTX Spark. Until that release, there is no supported DLSS 5 toggle to test in the PC game and no reliable way to infer its final image quality from demonstrations alone.
Preset C Performance Mode
The announcement also describes a new “Preset C” Performance Mode. It replaces the second AI model used by Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation with a faster, lighter algorithm. NVIDIA says it has minor image-quality trade-offs and is up to 35% faster on an RTX 5060.

That “up to 35%” statement applies to the frame-generation performance mode, not to a complete DLSS 5-versus-DLSS 4 Hogwarts Legacy benchmark. It should not be read as a 35% increase in every frame rate, nor as proof that the entire DLSS 5 rendering stack is faster on every RTX 50-series GPU.

Image quality: which version should look better?
On the information available before release, DLSS 5 has the higher potential ceiling, while DLSS 4 has the verifiable result. DLSS 4’s transformer models target temporal stability, ghosting, fine detail, reflection clarity and ray-tracing noise. Those are concrete improvements that can be evaluated in the current game.
DLSS 5’s advertised neural lighting and materials could be more noticeable in a screenshot or a well-lit room than another incremental edge-sharpening change. However, the quality of that result depends on NVIDIA’s final model, Hogwarts Legacy’s implementation, the selected preset and the scene. No independent test had established whether DLSS 5 consistently beats DLSS 4 in motion, at different output resolutions or with ray tracing enabled by October 20, 2026.
What to watch for in a real comparison
- Fine-detail motion: Look at hair, leaves, railings and distant architecture while panning the camera. Ghost trails or crawling detail indicate temporal instability.
- Reflections: Inspect windows, polished floors and water while walking past them. Compare both clarity and whether the reflection changes erratically.
- Lighting transitions: Move between bright exterior areas and darker interiors. A neural-lighting model should be judged on stability and plausibility, not only brightness.
- Material definition: Examine stone, metal, wood and cloth at native resolution and while moving. A sharper image is not automatically a more accurate material.
- Input response: Frame generation can raise the displayed frame rate without making the game simulation run at the same rate. Test camera response and latency separately from the counter in the corner.
Performance: what is actually documented
NVIDIA reports a 4x average performance multiplier for GeForce RTX 50-series cards using DLSS Multi Frame Generation in Hogwarts Legacy. It also says the feature can overcome a 110 FPS CPU bottleneck and enable up to 210 FPS with ray tracing and maximum settings.
Those are NVIDIA’s own 2025 test claims, not independent benchmark results. “Average” does not mean every scene is four times faster, and “up to 210 FPS” describes a best-case result under NVIDIA’s stated test configuration. Your resolution, CPU, ray-tracing options, game build, background processes and frame-rate cap can all produce a different number.

There is no equivalent Hogwarts Legacy DLSS 5 performance dataset yet. Until controlled tests are available after November 5, comparisons that present DLSS 5 as definitively faster or slower than DLSS 4 are speculation.

The safest reading for an RTX 40 owner is straightforward: use the DLSS 4 image-quality options that your game build exposes, but do not expect Multi Frame Generation. DLSS 5 was announced for RTX 50 Series, GeForce NOW and RTX Spark; RTX 40 was not included in that announcement.
How to configure DLSS 4 in the PC edition now
Menu names can vary slightly by game patch and graphics driver, but the process is the same: change the upscaler in the PC graphics settings, then enable only the frame-generation feature your hardware supports.
- Update the game and graphics driver. Install the January 30, 2025 or newer Hogwarts Legacy PC update and a current NVIDIA driver. Restart the game after either update so the new options are detected.
- Open the graphics menu. From the title screen or pause menu, open Settings, choose Graphics Options or the equivalent PC graphics page, and locate the DLSS or upscaling controls.
- Select NVIDIA DLSS for Upscale Type. Choose the available DLSS Super Resolution mode. Use a quality-oriented mode when image detail is the priority; use a more aggressive performance mode only when you need additional GPU headroom. The exact mode names and resolution behavior are controlled by the game build.
- Enable Ray Reconstruction when offered. If the menu exposes Ray Reconstruction separately, turn it on with ray-traced effects and compare reflective surfaces during movement. If the option is integrated into the DLSS setting, the game will apply it through that preset.
- Choose DLAA only when you have headroom. DLAA is the native-resolution, image-quality option. It generally makes sense when your conventional frame rate already meets your target and you do not need Super Resolution’s lower internal render cost.
- Enable Multi Frame Generation only on an RTX 50-series GPU. On supported hardware, turn on Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation in the frame-generation section. On RTX 40-series hardware, leave Multi Frame Generation off because the Hogwarts Legacy requirement is RTX 50-series.
- Apply ray tracing deliberately. Turn on the ray-traced reflection options you actually want to test, including water and other reflective surfaces. Maximum ray tracing can move the bottleneck from the GPU to the CPU or vice versa, so record the same settings when comparing modes.
- Set a sensible frame-rate target. Use an in-game or driver cap appropriate for your monitor rather than treating the highest counter reading as the goal. Check motion and controls after enabling frame generation, not just the reported FPS.
- Compare in the same scene. Save a location with foliage, reflective water or windows, and a mix of indoor and outdoor lighting. Walk the same route with each setting so your visual judgment is not changed by a different scene.
Choosing settings by your situation
You have an RTX 50-series desktop or laptop
Start with DLSS Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and Multi Frame Generation, then adjust the resolution and ray-tracing level to match your display. If you see distracting artifacts, test conventional Frame Generation or disable Multi Frame Generation temporarily; a higher counter is not useful if motion looks unstable or controls feel delayed.
You have an RTX 40-series card
Use the DLSS 4 transformer Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction or DLAA options exposed by your current game and driver. Do not plan around Multi Frame Generation in Hogwarts Legacy, because the documented requirement is RTX 50-series. Your practical choice is image quality versus conventional GPU rendering cost.

You are CPU-limited
DLSS Super Resolution reduces GPU work, but it cannot remove every CPU limit. NVIDIA’s 110 FPS bottleneck statement concerns its Multi Frame Generation testing and should not be treated as a promise that any CPU-limited scene will scale the same way. Lowering a GPU-heavy setting may do little when the processor is the limiting component.
You use a high-refresh display
Frame generation can make a high-refresh panel appear smoother when the base render rate is already stable. Test latency and frame pacing at your chosen cap. A fluctuating generated frame stream is less convincing than a lower but consistent output.
What to expect from DLSS 5 on November 5
When the announced update arrives, first confirm that your game, driver and platform expose DLSS 5. Record the same Hogwarts Legacy scene and settings used for your DLSS 4 comparison. Keep resolution, ray tracing, frame cap and display mode unchanged; otherwise a visual difference cannot be attributed to DLSS 5.
Test the standard mode before trying Preset C Performance Mode. Preset C is designed to make Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation faster, with NVIDIA warning of minor image-quality trade-offs. It is a performance choice inside the frame-generation path, not a replacement for evaluating DLSS 5’s neural lighting and materials.
For a useful comparison, capture native-resolution DLAA, DLSS 4 Super Resolution, DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation where supported, and the corresponding DLSS 5 modes. Check still images and motion, then note the base rendered frame rate, displayed frame rate and subjective latency separately.
Common mistakes when comparing DLSS versions
- Calling an announced feature available: DLSS 5 is not a Hogwarts Legacy feature at the October 20, 2026 cutoff; its announced date is November 5, 2026.
- Comparing different settings: Changing ray tracing, resolution or a frame cap at the same time as DLSS makes the result uninterpretable.
- Presenting NVIDIA’s figures as independent tests: The 4x, 110 FPS and 210 FPS numbers are NVIDIA-reported claims from 2025.
- Confusing displayed FPS with simulation performance: Multi Frame Generation inserts frames; the game engine still produces the underlying rendered frames.
- Assuming RTX 40 compatibility for every DLSS 4 feature: The broader image upgrades and the RTX 50-only Multi Frame Generation feature have different requirements.
- Using Preset C’s 35% claim as a full-game benchmark: NVIDIA’s statement is about a frame-generation performance mode on an RTX 5060.
- Judging from one screenshot: Ghosting, reflection stability, lighting transitions and input response require movement tests.
Verdict: is DLSS 5 better than DLSS 4 in Hogwarts Legacy?
Not conclusively yet. DLSS 4 is better for a decision you need to make now because it is released, supported in Hogwarts Legacy and backed by game-specific NVIDIA performance figures. Its transformer Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, DLAA and improved reflections address the image problems players can inspect today.
DLSS 5 may be better visually if its 3D-Guided Neural Rendering delivers the promised improvements to lighting and materials without unacceptable artifacts or latency. That remains a hypothesis until the November 5 release and independent Hogwarts Legacy testing. Its announced support also centers on RTX 50 Series, GeForce NOW and RTX Spark; an RTX 40 card should not be assumed compatible.
For current play, configure DLSS 4 around your GPU, display and ray-tracing target. Revisit the comparison after DLSS 5 launches, using identical scenes and settings rather than relying on the marketing figures alone.
