Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Django does not throttle authentication requests by default, and adding django-otp does not by itself secure every login or custom verification path. A safer implementation needs effective rate limits, replay-resistant TOTP checks, a reasoned clock-drift window, and explicit selection of the device being verified. The four mistakes below are an editorial checklist—not a measured claim about how often tutorials make them.
1. Assuming Django throttles authentication by default
Django’s security guidance is explicit: “Django does not throttle requests to authenticate users.” Its security documentation suggests using a plugin or web-server module to help protect against brute-force attacks. Django’s security guidance is for Django 4.2; check the documentation for the version you deploy and verify the behavior of your actual login views.

Do not protect only the standard login form. An OTP challenge endpoint, a custom API, or another route that accepts credentials or verification codes can be attacked independently. Make sure the controls cover each route that can advance authentication, and test that they take effect in the deployed application.

2. Accepting a TOTP more than once—or widening the time window without cause
TOTP codes change with time, but a code that has already succeeded should not be reusable during its validity period. NIST’s current digital identity guidance requires replay resistance for time-based OTPs and says a verifier should accept a given code only once during that period. NIST SP 800-63B-4 also says the accepted lifetime should account for expected authenticator clock drift, network delay, and the time a person needs to enter the code.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
In django-otp 1.7.3, TOTPDevice documents a default 30-second step, six digits, and a tolerance of one step. With that tolerance, the device checks the current, previous, and next time step. On successful verification, it records the accepted step in last_t; a later check must use a higher step. These are package-documented behaviors, not a guarantee that custom code or a different installed version behaves the same way. django-otp’s TOTP device documentation
What to check
- Confirm the installed django-otp version and the effective TOTP step, tolerance, and replay-tracking behavior.
- Keep the tolerance no broader than needed for expected clock drift and ordinary entry or network delay.
- Ensure successful verification updates replay state atomically enough for your application’s concurrent requests; inspect custom verification code rather than assuming it inherits device behavior.
3. Leaving OTP verification effectively unthrottled
Rate limiting matters even when the password step is protected: an attacker may target the OTP challenge directly. NIST calls for effective rate limiting for OTP authenticators under its stated requirements. django-otp documents exponential delays after failed verification attempts, controlled by a throttle factor; a factor of zero disables this throttling. django-otp’s device documentation

Those protections apply only when the deployed flow actually uses the relevant device verification methods and settings. A custom endpoint that checks codes another way may bypass them. Confirm the effective configuration, exercise repeated failures against each verification route, and check that any surrounding cache or database behavior supports the limits you intend to enforce. The exact implementation and backing services are deployment-specific.
4. Trying one submitted code against every registered device
A user may have multiple enrolled devices, but a submitted token should be checked against the device selected for that challenge—not blindly tested against every device on the account. django-otp warns that failed checks against unintended devices can trigger throttling, including for static recovery devices. django-otp’s device documentation

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Design the flow so the challenge identifies the intended device, then pass the submitted token to that device’s verification method. For recovery, device replacement, or multiple authenticators, make the choice explicit rather than probing all enrolled devices behind the scenes.

django-otp provides device types and integration points; installation alone does not complete a secure MFA flow. Its documentation treats plugin installation, OTP-enabled login views, restricting access until verification, and device registration as distinct tasks. django-otp documentation Review each layer in the context of your installed version and custom authentication paths.
