The iPhone 18 Pro’s 48MP Fusion Main camera offers four aperture settings—ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0—that let you balance light gathering against how much of a scene stays in focus. Choose a wider setting for dim conditions; choose ƒ/4.0 when you want more depth of field, such as when photographing a group. Apple lists these as discrete options, not a continuously adjustable range.
What variable aperture changes
Aperture is the opening in a lens through which light reaches the camera sensor. The f-number describes that opening: a lower number means a wider aperture. On the iPhone 18 Pro, ƒ/1.48 is the widest listed setting and ƒ/4.0 is the narrowest.

A wider aperture admits more light, which can be useful when the scene is dim. Stopping down to a narrower aperture admits less light but increases depth of field—the range in front of and behind the focus point that appears acceptably sharp. Apple identifies ƒ/4.0 as useful when you want more of a group in focus. These are trade-offs, not guarantees of a particular exposure or look in every scene.
Which aperture setting should you choose?
| Setting | Practical use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| ƒ/1.48 | Start here when available light is scarce and you want the widest listed opening. | It admits more light than the narrower listed settings, but offers less depth of field. |
| ƒ/1.8 | Use as an intermediate option between the widest setting and the narrower choices. | Less light passes through than at ƒ/1.48; the exact exposure and focus appearance depend on the scene. |
| ƒ/2.8 | Use as another intermediate step when you want to move toward greater depth of field. | It admits less light than ƒ/1.48 or ƒ/1.8. |
| ƒ/4.0 | Choose when more of the scene should remain in focus; Apple specifically cites group photos. | It is the narrowest listed setting and admits the least light of these four. |
These suggestions follow from the aperture values and the documented light-versus-depth-of-field trade-off; Apple does not publish a measured blur amount or an exposure difference for each step. No setting is universally best. Consider both the available light and whether you are photographing one person, a group, or a deeper scene.

Apple’s guide describes the available control, but labels and screen flow can change with iOS updates. Consult the current Apple Support camera guide if the controls on your device differ. Third-party camera apps may implement controls differently; do not assume they offer the same aperture choices.

The variable aperture is a physical feature of the 48MP Fusion Main camera. Apple lists the ultrawide camera at a fixed ƒ/2.2 aperture; the four variable-aperture settings do not apply to every rear camera.

Because it changes a physical lens opening, aperture is not simply a software slider for blur strength. It can affect depth of field, but the available specifications do not quantify how much background blur any setting produces. Do not expect it to recreate the shallow-background look of a larger-camera system in every scene.

Apple’s September 9, 2026 announcement presents variable aperture as a way to support low-light capture and give photographers more control. Its technical specifications list the four settings and the main camera’s 48MP resolution. Those are product specifications and stated uses, not independent comparative test results. Apple has not established that choosing a particular setting always reduces noise, makes an image sharper, or improves image quality in every situation.
