Signal is the better choice for private text conversations. Signal says its messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted, and its usernames let you start a chat without giving that contact your phone number. Discord is better for servers, channels, and community voice and video—but its text messages are not end-to-end encrypted. Discord’s audio and video calls are now end-to-end encrypted by default, with stage channels excluded.
How do Discord and Signal differ on message privacy?
The key distinction is not simply whether a service says data is “encrypted.” Discord says information is encrypted in transit and at rest, but those protections are different from end-to-end encryption: Discord’s messages are not end-to-end encrypted and remain subject to its moderation approach. Signal says its messages are end-to-end encrypted, meaning the service is not intended to read their content. End-to-end encryption is a specific protection for content, not a guarantee that every aspect of using an app is private. Discord describes collecting and storing information to provide the service and support safety and moderation. Signal says its design minimizes what the service knows about who is communicating and group participation. Neither statement is an independent comparative audit, so treat them as descriptions from the services themselves.
Are Discord calls end-to-end encrypted?
Yes, within a defined scope. Discord’s May 18, 2026 announcement says end-to-end encryption is standard for voice and video calls in DMs, group DMs, voice channels, and Go Live. Stage channels are excluded. The announcement states: “End-to-end Encryption is now standard for every voice and video call on Discord, outside of stage channels.” Read the Discord announcement for the stated coverage.

This change applies to calls, not text messages. It is therefore accurate to say Discord’s specified voice and video calls are end-to-end encrypted by default; it is not accurate to say that Discord messages are end-to-end encrypted or that the whole service is.
Can you use Signal without sharing your phone number?
You can start a Signal conversation with a username rather than sharing your number with that contact, but you still need a phone number to register. Signal puts it plainly: “You will still need a phone number to register for Signal.” You can also control who can see your number and who can find you by it. A username is not a public searchable handle displayed to chat partners, and Signal says you can change or delete it. Details are in Signal’s username and phone-number privacy post.

That makes Signal useful if the concern is giving a new contact your personal number—not if the requirement is to use the service without any phone number at all.
Which app is better for group chats and communities?
Choose Signal for private conversations
Signal fits personal one-to-one chats and small-group conversations where end-to-end encryption for text and calls matters. It also supports group calls and call links. A call link can let someone join a call without first creating a group chat; see Signal’s call-links announcement. Signal’s 2021 engineering article reported scaling group-call support to 40 participants at that time, but that historical figure does not establish the current participant limit.

Choose Discord for server-based social spaces
Discord is designed for gaming groups, clubs, creator communities, and other spaces organized around servers and channels. That structure, along with integrated voice and video, is its advantage when you want ongoing community participation rather than a private messenger. Privacy and moderation depend in part on the space and its settings. Discord describes data controls in its Data Privacy Controls guide; defaults and availability can vary by age or location.

- Choose Signal if end-to-end encrypted text is the deciding factor, or if you want to contact someone without disclosing your phone number to them.
- Choose Discord if server and channel organization and community participation matter more, and you accept that Discord text messages are not end-to-end encrypted.
- Use both if you want Discord for communities and Signal for sensitive personal conversations. This is a practical way to match each app to its strengths, not a recommendation from either company.
For either service, review the current privacy policy and account settings for your region and account. The available official information describes different product goals and protections, but does not establish an independent head-to-head privacy score or performance ranking.
