Disabling Error Messages in BIOS: A Comprehensive Guide

There is no universal BIOS switch that disables all startup errors. Learn which setting controls the F1 pause, the logo screen or the halt on warnings, and when to fix the cause instead.

There is no single BIOS or UEFI setting that turns off every startup error message on every computer. What you can change depends on what you are seeing: a POST text screen, a manufacturer logo that hides the messages, a “Press F1” pause after an error, or a system that halts on warnings. Each of these is controlled by a different setting, and vendors name and place those settings differently. Identify the behavior first, then find the matching option in your own model’s manual.

Start by identifying what you are seeing

Most people who search for this topic want one of three outcomes. Each one needs a different fix, and some of them should not be changed at all.

What you see at startup What you want Setting family that usually controls it
Startup stops and says to press F1 after an error Boot past the error without the pause A “Wait for F1 if there is error” option (ASUS, Supermicro)
A manufacturer or OEM logo replaces POST text, or a BIOS or RAID prompt is hidden See the POST text or the setup prompt Quiet Boot (set to Disabled to show POST text)
The system halts on a warning or error Continue startup past the warning or error Warning and error behavior options such as Dell’s “Continue on Warnings,” or Gigabyte’s Post Error Message and Halt On settings

Before changing anything, photograph the full error text or write it down, and note your computer or motherboard model. The exact wording tells you which of the three behaviors you are dealing with. It also tells you whether the message points to a hardware fault that needs fixing rather than hiding.

Settings that control what appears at startup

Quiet Boot

Quiet Boot decides whether the screen shows POST information or a logo while the machine starts. Siemens’s BIOS reference manual describes it as showing a logo instead of POST information. Intel’s server guidance says the same thing in practice: an OEM or Intel logo can hide BIOS and RAID setup prompts until Quiet Boot is turned off.

Quiet Boot does not reliably suppress error messages. Supermicro’s manual for the B14DBT board states that “BIOS POST messages are always displayed regardless of the setting of this feature.” If you want to see more startup text, setting Quiet Boot to Disabled is the usual step. It is not a way to hide errors.

Extend BIOS POST Time (Dell)

Dell’s Precision 7820 Tower owner’s manual describes Extend BIOS POST Time as adding a pre-boot delay so that POST status messages can be read. The documented choices are 0, 5, or 10 seconds. This setting makes messages easier to see; it does not stop them from appearing.

Stopping at an F1 prompt

An F1 pause happens when the BIOS detects an error and waits for you to acknowledge it before continuing. The option that controls this is often named “Wait for F1 if there is error.” Supermicro describes it as forcing the BIOS to wait for F1 when an error occurs, with Disabled and Enabled as the choices.

ASUS’s motherboard support article gives one model-specific example. The path it documents is:

  1. Restart the computer and press Delete (or the key your board uses) to enter BIOS setup.
  2. Go to Boot and find Wait for F1 if there is error.
  3. Set it to Disabled.
  4. Save changes and exit.

ASUS presents this change as “Not suggested” for turning off the F1 notification. Disabling the pause only means the machine will not wait for you. If the error is real, it will still be there after the next boot.

Continuing past warnings and errors

Some firmware lets the system keep going after a warning, after an error, or after both. Vendors describe this in different ways, so compare your own menu against the options below.

Dell Precision 7820

The Dell manual lists three behavior options for warnings and errors:

Option Default Effect as documented
Prompt on Warnings and Errors Yes The system stops and asks you to respond
Continue on Warnings No Warnings do not stop startup; errors still prompt
Continue on Warnings and Errors No Neither warnings nor errors stop startup

Gigabyte H374-A81-AAW1 server board

The Gigabyte server manual separates two controls. Post Error Message can be enabled or disabled, and Halt On can be set to No Error or All Error. The manual lists Enabled and No Error as the defaults. Keeping Halt On set to All Error is what makes the machine stop on an error, so changing it is the lever for continuing past one.

Siemens describes SM Error Halt as stopping startup after a monitoring error reported by the BMC, when the Halt On All Errors option is selected. If you see a stop tied to a management-controller report, check this setting before anything else.

Why hiding a message does not fix the fault

A prompt that you bypass is still a report. ASUS points to three common causes of startup messages: a failing or unplugged CPU fan, a drive reporting a SMART warning, and a CMOS battery that is running low. Each of these can cause the machine to behave badly later even when the warning has been silenced.

  • Fan warnings: check the fan connector, the fan itself, and the fan header setting before continuing.
  • Drive SMART warnings: back up the drive’s data and check the drive’s health tool; a SMART warning is an early sign of failure.
  • CMOS battery warnings: a weak coin cell can cause date and time resets and settings loss, so replace it when the warning appears.

If the error does not match any of these, search for the exact message text together with your model name before changing a startup behavior.

Making changes safely

Microsoft advises caution when changing BIOS or UEFI settings, and notes that menus vary by manufacturer. A wrong change can stop a computer from starting correctly. Follow these habits:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Change one setting at a time, and write down its original value.
  • Use the manufacturer’s manual for your exact model, not a generic guide.
  • Leave unrelated settings alone. Secure Boot, boot order, and memory settings have nothing to do with the messages covered here.
  • Save with the menu’s Save Changes and Exit option so the change is kept, then confirm the result on the next boot.

What to do next

Use the table at the top to match your symptom to a setting family, then look up that setting in your motherboard or PC manual. Note the exact message text and your model before you start, because the menu names above are examples rather than a universal sequence. If the message points to a fan, drive, or battery problem, fix that first; turning off the message is a separate decision.
