Samsung India says that on supported models running One UI 6.1 or later, you can use your previous PIN, password, or pattern to get back in, but only if you changed the lock recently and still remember the old one. If that option is not available to you, every route Samsung documents for regaining access erases the device’s data.
Start with the check below, because it decides which path you can take.

Check whether the previous-lock recovery applies to you
Samsung India’s guidance (updated 10 July 2026) describes this recovery route. Answer these three questions before you do anything else:

Open Settings and check the software version. Availability depends on the model, software version, and region, so a missing option does not prove the phone is broken.
- Did you change the screen lock within the last 72 hours? Samsung says the previous screen-lock data is stored for 72 hours after a PIN, password, or pattern change and then deleted. After that window closes, this route is gone.
- Do you remember the credential that was in place before the change? The recovery asks for that previous method, not the new one.
If all three answers are yes, follow the steps below. If any answer is no, skip to the section on reset options.

Use the previous-lock recovery
Samsung’s documented sequence is as follows. Menu labels can differ slightly by model, so match the wording on your screen to the steps.
- On the lock screen, enter an incorrect PIN, password, or pattern. The recovery option, labelled “Forgot PIN/Password/Pattern” in Samsung’s support wording, appears after five or more failed attempts. Do not keep guessing past that point. Each guess counts against you.
- Tap “Forgot PIN/Password/Pattern.”
- Enter the previous PIN, password, or pattern, the one you used before your most recent change.
- If the previous credential is accepted, set a new screen lock and confirm it.
Be aware of the attempt limit inside this flow. Samsung says that if the previous lock method is entered incorrectly three times in this recovery flow, no more attempts are allowed. Samsung also says the feature can be used once per lock type. If you run out of tries, you will need one of the reset routes described below.

Once you are back in, consider saving a note of the new lock somewhere secure. This route exists only for a short window, so it is not a safety net for future changes.

The recovery is not guaranteed on every Galaxy phone. Check these items in order:

- The model and software version. The guidance covers supported models on One UI 6.1 or later only.
- The timing. If more than 72 hours have passed since the lock was changed, the previous credential is no longer stored.
- The previous credential. If you changed the lock more than once inside the window, the stored credential may be the one you set before the most recent change, so try that one.
- The attempt count. If you have reached the five-attempt threshold but the option still does not show, check Samsung’s official page for your model, since menu behaviour varies.
If none of these resolves the issue, a reset is the only remaining route Samsung documents.
Why remote unlock is not a fix
Many older articles suggest that SmartThings Find can unlock a locked phone remotely. Samsung UK’s support page for locked devices (updated 24 April 2026) says remote unlocking through SmartThings Find is no longer possible. Do not follow remote-unlock steps you find elsewhere; they do not describe a current, universal capability.

SmartThings Find can still do something useful: it can erase the phone. Samsung’s US guidance on locating a lost Galaxy device lists the requirements for Find features, including power, a network connection, a Samsung account added to the device, and remote controls enabled. If those were not set up before you lost access, the remote options are unavailable.
Smart Lock and Extend Unlock are also not recovery tools. They only help when they were configured before the lockout and the phone is in a trusted situation. They cannot reveal or reset a credential you have forgotten after the device has locked you out.

The table shows the trade-off clearly. Only the previous-lock route keeps your local data without a wipe, and it is the only one with a strict time limit.
If you must reset
Before you start
- Find your Samsung account email and password, and confirm you can sign in on another device.
- Find the Google account that was signed in on the phone, along with its password. Factory Reset Protection can ask for it after a reset.
- If you have any backup of photos, messages, or files, confirm it is complete. A reset deletes personal data on the phone, so anything not backed up is lost.
- If the phone is still connected and Find was set up in advance, you can use SmartThings Find to erase data remotely from another device. Erasing is permanent, so use it only when you have decided the data is no longer needed.
After the reset
Expect to set up the phone again from the beginning. Sign in with your Google account when prompted. If Factory Reset Protection blocks setup, the account that was registered on the phone is the one it will ask for, and entering a different account will not get past it. Samsung’s US guide notes that menus and layouts can vary by device, so follow the labels on your screen.
When to get official help
If you cannot satisfy an account-verification prompt, or if the reset keeps stalling, contact Samsung support or take the device to an authorized Samsung service center. They can verify ownership in ways a third-party tool cannot. Avoid any service that promises to bypass a lock or account check. Such methods do not appear in Samsung’s documentation, and they can put your data and your account at risk.
