With Canon’s Pro Photo Printers You Can Produce Gallery-Quality Prints at Home

Yes, Canon sells desktop professional photo printers that can produce high-quality prints at home, but no printer guarantees gallery quality on its own. Canon’s specifications establish what each machine can physically do: the maximum sheet size, the ink system, the media it accepts, and the panorama and borderless options. Whether a finished print meets a gallery standard depends on the file, the colour preparation, the paper, the print settings and your own standard of judgement. This guide explains how to choose among Canon’s current pro models and where the printer’s limits begin.

What the printer can and cannot promise

Canon’s product pages and manuals describe capability. They do not show that a given photograph, on a given paper, will look like a gallery print. Three things determine that outcome, and only one of them is the printer:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • The file. Resolution, sharpening, and colour space set the ceiling before the printer touches the image.
  • The media and settings. Paper type, media setting, and print mode must match each other. A mismatch can cost detail even on a capable machine.
  • The viewing conditions and your standard. A print judged under a warm desk lamp will look different from one judged under daylight-balanced light, and a print that satisfies a family album may not satisfy a portfolio review.

Read Canon’s claims about ink, colour and quality as the manufacturer’s description of its system. They are not independent test results.

Canon’s current pro models at a glance

Three Canon models are documented well enough to compare on size, ink and media. The table uses only values stated in Canon’s own pages and manuals; blank-looking cells are marked where Canon’s cited pages do not state a value.

The PRO-200S and PRO-300 are both described as 13-inch professional printers. The PRO-1000 handles larger media and suits readers who need sheets bigger than 13 inches across.

Choosing by ink system

The ink system shapes colour behaviour, black-and-white handling and the ink you will keep buying, so it deserves a decision before size or price.

Dye-based ink: PIXMA PRO-200S

Canon describes the PRO-200S as an eight-ink dye-based system that includes black, gray and light gray. Canon’s own product description presents this as a strength for colour and monochrome work. Dye-based inks are a different chemistry from pigment, so the two families should not be treated as interchangeable. Ink replacement uses the CLI-65 family that Canon identifies for this printer.

Pigment ink: imagePROGRAF PRO-300

Canon’s 2020 launch announcement describes the PRO-300 as using nine LUCIA PRO pigment colours with Chroma Optimizer. Canon presents the pigment system as its premium-media option. Readers who prioritise archival-oriented pigment inks and fine-art media should weigh the PRO-300 on that basis, while checking Canon’s current specifications for the longevity claims they plan to rely on.

Model not stated: imagePROGRAF PRO-1000

The PRO-1000 manual pages cited here do not state its ink system, so choose it for its media capacity and check the ink specification in Canon’s current documentation before buying.

Choosing by maximum print size

Size is the most common reason to upgrade, and it has two separate limits: the largest borderless print and the largest sheet the feed path accepts. They are not the same number.

  • Scan & Copy Handling - Utilize the device’s integrated scanner for efficient scanning and copying operations

13-inch class: PIXMA PRO-200S and imagePROGRAF PRO-300

The PRO-200S lists borderless printing from 3.5 × 5 inches up to 13 × 19 inches. Its panorama mode reaches a custom 13 × 39 inches, which is useful for wide landscapes and banners. The PRO-300 is a 13-inch professional option; Canon’s announcement describes media handling for panorama-sized paper, but the cited pages do not give its panorama maximum.

Larger media: imagePROGRAF PRO-1000

The PRO-1000 manual lists standard sizes including A2 and 17 × 22 inches. Those are media sizes the printer can accept, not a promise that every paper prints borderless at that size. Canon’s manual gives different maximums for top feed and manual feed, so a sheet that loads one way may not load the other.

Paper, feed path and borderless limits

Paper choice affects the result as much as the printer model. Before you buy media or plan a project, check these items against the manual for your specific model:

Best Value

  • CES Imaging is a Canon Platinum Reseller
  • 1 year on-site warranty by Canon
  1. Confirm the sheet size is listed for your model, and whether borderless printing is available at that size.
  2. Check the paper’s weight and thickness against the limit for the feed path you plan to use. The PRO-1000 manual sets separate limits for specialty paper by feed path.
  3. Do not assume every photo paper works in every feed path. Canon’s manual warns against paper heavier or thicker than the specified limit.
  4. If you plan borderless output, test one print at the exact size and paper you will use. Canon warns that borderless printing can be unavailable for some sizes or papers and can affect image quality or feed precision.
  5. Keep a note of the media setting that worked for each paper, so repeat prints are consistent.

The PRO-1000 manual pages are at PRO-1000 series: Media Types You Can Use and PRO-1000 series: Printing Area. Canon’s manual pages carry 2015–2019 copyright notices, so confirm the current edition before relying on a specific limit.

Ink and software in the workflow

Ongoing cost and convenience depend on consumables and software as much as on the hardware. Canon identifies CLI-65 as the ink family for the PRO-200S, and the cited Canon pages list Professional Print and Layout software for both the PRO-200S and the PRO-300. Verify cartridge and paper compatibility with your exact model before ordering, because Canon’s pages name ink families and paper types rather than every individual product code.

Reading print-time figures

Canon’s July 9, 2020 announcement for the PRO-300 gives a print time of approximately 4 minutes 15 seconds for a bordered 13 × 19-inch print on Photo Paper Pro Premium, under Canon’s stated test conditions. Treat that as a single vendor test. Print time changes with the image, the print mode, the paper and the borders you choose, and it should not be used as a typical figure for your own work.

Matching a model to your work

  • Prints up to 13 × 19 inches, mostly colour photography: the PIXMA PRO-200S fits the documented size and dye-ink profile, with Canon’s wireless connectivity described on its product page.
  • Prints up to 13 × 19 inches with a pigment-ink preference: the imagePROGRAF PRO-300 is Canon’s pigment option in the 13-inch class.
  • Sheets larger than 13 inches across: the imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 is the model in this group that lists media up to 17 × 22 inches, subject to the feed-path limits above.
  • Wide panoramas: the PRO-200S’s custom panorama range of up to 13 × 39 inches is the only panorama maximum stated in the cited sources.

Canon’s current product page for the PIXMA PRO-200S is at Shop Canon PIXMA PRO-200S. The PRO-300 support page is at Canon Support for imagePROGRAF PRO-300, and the 2020 launch announcement is at New imagePROGRAF.

In the 2020 launch announcement, Canon’s Tatsuro “Tony” Kano, executive vice president of Canon U.S.A.’s Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, said the PRO-300 was intended “to make it easier to print work at home.” That is the company’s description of its product, not independent evidence of print quality.
