Turning off Windows 11’s transparency and animation effects can make an older or lower-powered laptop feel more responsive, and may help reduce power use. The benefit varies by device: there is no established speed or battery-life figure, and the change may be negligible on a modern gaming PC.
Which Windows 11 setting should you turn off?
Windows 11 uses visual effects such as transparent surfaces and animated transitions. Microsoft notes that visual effects can use system resources, but disabling them is a modest tuning option—not a guaranteed fix for a slow laptop. The recommendation comes from a PCWorld tip published October 6, 2026; settings names and locations can vary slightly by Windows build or device maker. PCWorld’s Windows 11 visual-effects guide explains the suggested changes.

Turn off transparency or animation effects
Disable transparency
- Open Settings > Personalization > Colors.
- Switch off Transparency effects.
Some Windows 11 builds also expose the transparency control under Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects.

Disable animations
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects.
- Switch off Animation effects.
Windows will no longer animate transitions and other interface motion. Actions may feel more immediate, but the interface will be less animated.

Choose the scope that suits your laptop
| Option | What changes | Trade-off | Where it is most plausible to help |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turn off transparency | Transparent interface surfaces are removed. | Less visual layering; animations remain. | Older or lower-powered hardware may benefit; the effect can be negligible on modern gaming PCs. |
| Turn off animation effects | Animated transitions and motion effects are removed. | Interface actions look less fluid. | Older or lower-powered hardware may benefit; the effect can be negligible on modern gaming PCs. |
| Adjust for best performance | Turns off a broader set of visual effects. | Produces a plainer Windows interface. | Consider it if the two individual changes are not enough and you are comfortable sacrificing more visual polish. |
Apply the broader visual-effects setting
- Search Windows for Adjust Windows appearance and performance, then open the matching result.
- On the Visual Effects tab, select Adjust for best performance.
- Select Apply or OK if shown.
What improvement should you expect?
There is no measured percentage, benchmark, or fixed battery-runtime increase established for these changes. Older laptops and mini PCs may feel smoother and may last longer on battery, while the difference can be negligible on modern gaming hardware. Treat the adjustment as a low-effort experiment: if the plainer interface is not worth the perceived benefit, restore the effects you miss.

Stop unnecessary apps from launching at sign-in
In Task Manager > Startup apps, disable apps you do not need to launch automatically. This limits what loads when you sign in; it does not change visual rendering or directly speed up the core system. You can re-enable an app later.

Use Windows power and battery controls separately
Power mode is not the same setting as visual effects. Microsoft warns that choosing Best performance power mode on a laptop drains the battery faster and can make the device warmer. For lower power consumption, Windows 11’s Best power efficiency mode reduces consumption by limiting background activity; it is optional and not required to change visual effects. You can also inspect per-app battery usage and manage background activity for apps that provide that control.
