An MCP gateway is an optional layer between MCP clients and servers. It can give clients one endpoint for multiple remote servers and provide centralized routing or access controls; some gateways also translate API calls, manage server lifecycles, or collect telemetry. A direct connection is simpler when a client needs only a local or single server. MCP does not require a gateway, and the features it provides depend on the implementation.
What is the difference between a raw MCP server and a gateway?
A raw MCP server implements the Model Context Protocol and exposes its own tools or other capabilities to a client. The client connects to that server directly. If it needs several remote servers, it generally configures each one it will use.

A gateway sits between the client and one or more backend servers. It may expose an MCP endpoint of its own, route calls to registered MCP servers, or map MCP tool calls to another interface, such as a REST API. The gateway is an architectural choice, not a required part of MCP. Its available functions are product-specific.

| Routing | The client selects a server endpoint. | The gateway can route calls to configured servers or tools. Microsoft MCP Gateway documentation |
| Access controls | Each server and downstream system enforces its own controls. | A gateway can add a central policy point, but downstream identity and authorization still need to be addressed. AWS Prescriptive Guidance |
| API mediation | The server or a custom integration handles the connection to an API. | Some gateways translate MCP calls to REST operations and return the result as an MCP response. Google Cloud API Gateway documentation |
| Operations | There is no gateway intermediary to configure or operate. | Some implementations add lifecycle management, telemetry, or observability, alongside another service to operate. Microsoft MCP Gateway documentation; Kong MCP documentation |
This is an architectural comparison, not a measured cost or performance study. A gateway can reduce per-client setup while increasing the number of components and policies operators must manage.

How does a gateway handle a request?
The general pattern for a gateway in front of MCP servers is client → gateway endpoint → selected MCP server → downstream service. The gateway may apply configured routing or access policies along the way; the exact behavior depends on the product. AWS describes a gateway as a centralized proxy and orchestrator for registered servers. AWS Prescriptive Guidance: MCP hosting strategy
Example: MCP calls mapped to a REST API
Google Cloud documents a distinct API Gateway configuration that exposes configured REST operations as MCP tools. In that product’s documented flow, the client sends a JSON-RPC call; the gateway validates it and checks authentication, maps the requested tool to an HTTP path, parameters, and body, and forwards the request to the REST backend. It then converts the HTTP response into an MCP JSON-RPC response. Google marks this MCP support as Preview, so this flow should not be assumed for other gateways or treated as generally available. - One connection point: A client may connect to one endpoint rather than register each remote server separately. This can simplify client configuration when several servers are involved. AWS Prescriptive Guidance
- Routing: The gateway can select a server or tool based on its configuration or routing logic. Microsoft documents tool routing and request-routing patterns. Microsoft MCP Gateway documentation
- Authentication and authorization: A gateway can check access at a central point or apply configured policies. That does not, by itself, establish which user or agent is acting or what access it should have downstream. Google Cloud API Gateway documentation; AWS Prescriptive Guidance
- Protocol or API translation: Some gateways map MCP requests to REST operations and translate responses back, allowing configured API operations to be offered as MCP tools without rewriting the backend. Google Cloud API Gateway documentation
- Lifecycle management: Some implementations support server deployment and updates as part of gateway management. Microsoft MCP Gateway documentation
- Discovery and tool selection: Some gateways offer ways to find tools, including semantic search. AWS cites this as a capability of its AgentCore Gateway example; it is not an MCP protocol requirement. AWS Prescriptive Guidance
- Telemetry and observability: Gateway products may expose operational information about traffic or services. These are implementation features, not requirements of MCP. Microsoft MCP Gateway documentation; Kong MCP documentation
What a gateway does not solve automatically
Identity across the whole request path
Centralizing access checks does not settle how the gateway identifies an agent, what permissions it grants, or how a backend server authenticates to a downstream resource. Treat these as separate decisions: who is calling, which tools they may use, and what credentials the server uses for its own dependencies. AWS specifically identifies identity as a challenge in MCP hosting. AWS Prescriptive Guidance

Protocol-version and state assumptions
The MCP maintainers’ 2026-07-28 specification release-candidate materials describe a stateless protocol core and routing via an Mcp-Method header. For that version’s protocol-layer behavior, ordinary round-robin load balancing does not require sticky sessions or a shared session store. This does not mean every application is stateless: an application can carry state in tool arguments, and a gateway can maintain its own state. MCP maintainers: 2026-07-28 Specification Release Candidate
The 2026-07-28 protocol overview also says that an open transport connection or STDIO process is not itself a conversation or session, and that server identity information is self-reported rather than verified by the protocol. Do not treat connection continuity as proof of a persistent conversation, or self-reported server metadata as verified identity. MCP Specification: Basic protocol overview (2026-07-28)
Authorization guidance is version-specific, too. The 2025-11-25 specification says HTTP-based implementations should use the MCP HTTP authorization framework when supported, while STDIO implementations should obtain credentials from the environment. Check the specification version and transport used by your deployment before applying that guidance. MCP Specification: Authorization (2025-11-25)

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you use a gateway?
As practical architectural guidance—not a protocol rule—start with direct connections for a local, single-user tool or a client that needs one straightforward server. Evaluate a gateway when it addresses a concrete need such as managing access to multiple remote servers from one endpoint, centralizing routing or policy, exposing REST operations as MCP tools, or coordinating server operations.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Direct connection is a reasonable fit when a small setup can configure each server directly and there is no need for a shared routing or policy layer.
- Evaluate a gateway when many clients need access to several remote servers, central controls are important, or API mediation or gateway-level operations solve a real deployment problem.
- Before adopting one, verify protocol compatibility, identity and downstream credential handling, the gateway’s actual feature set, and the operational work its extra service introduces.
