Dinghai: The Ocean Pillar is a single-player action RPG with roguelike runs, dual-weapon combat, and exploration across a mythic world inspired by the Classic of Mountains and Seas. The full game is still listed as coming soon on Steam, while a free Windows demo lets beginners learn the core loop. Start by pairing two weapons with complementary range and tempo, use each run to test abilities, Adornments, and Vessels, and rely on the new compass whenever a route becomes confusing.

This guide explains the systems currently documented for the demo, the safest way to approach a first run, how to locate Waystones, and what arrived in the October 16, 2026 Heyang update. Demo content, review totals, requirements, and update details can change before launch.

What is Dinghai: The Ocean Pillar?

You play the Abyssal Dragon, which takes control of Yi’s body in a mythic setting drawn from the Classic of Mountains and Seas. The game combines real-time action combat with a roguelike structure: each attempt presents new choices, and dying advances your understanding and strength rather than simply deleting all progress.

The official description summarizes the intended rhythm this way: “Every run is a fresh trial. Unlock new abilities, discover powerful combinations, and push deeper into a world that grows stranger and more dangerous the further you go.” That means a failed run is useful even when you do not reach the end of a stage. You are learning enemy behavior, testing a weapon pairing, identifying useful upgrade combinations, and becoming more efficient on the next attempt.

How the combat loop works

Choose two weapons, not one permanent class

Every build starts with two weapon types. The documented weapon names include swords, dual blades, and bows. You can switch between the two weapons during a run, unlock abilities for your build, and combine those choices with Adornments and Vessels. Instead of selecting a class that locks your entire approach, you are making a smaller set of decisions repeatedly as a run develops.

For a first attempt, use one weapon pair for long enough to understand its rhythm. Constantly changing both weapons and upgrade priorities makes it difficult to tell whether a mistake came from positioning, timing, or an incompatible build. A stable pair gives you a reference point: you can see which attacks create space, which abilities help against groups, and when a switch is worth the interruption.

How do I switch weapons?

Use the weapon-switch input shown in the game’s Controls or Key Bindings screen. The available documentation confirms that switching is a core action but does not publish a universal default keyboard key or controller button, so check your current bindings rather than relying on a key listed for another demo build.

  1. Open the controls or key-binding view before starting a serious run.
  2. Identify the command assigned to weapon switching and test it in a safe area.
  3. Equip the two weapons you intend to learn and confirm which icon or indicator represents the active one.
  4. Switch deliberately when you need a different range, attack tempo, or ability set; do not treat the second weapon as an emergency button you never practice.
  5. If a switch does not register, pause and verify that the input is not unbound, duplicated with another action, or being intercepted by a controller profile.

Because the exact default inputs are not stated in the current public material, a remapped control is normal rather than evidence that the feature is missing.

Build around range and tempo

Weapon choice should answer two practical questions: how close do you need to stand, and how quickly can you act again after an attack? A sword or dual-blade setup gives you a close-range option, while a bow supplies a ranged approach. The game’s public description does not provide frame data, damage tables, or a developer-approved tier list, so treat these as planning categories rather than measured rankings.

Pairing concept Range plan Crowd-control question Survivability question Adornment/Vessel focus
Sword + dual blades Both choices are oriented toward close engagement; switch to control your tempo rather than to create distance. Can one weapon handle several nearby targets while the other finishes a priority enemy? Do your upgrades help you stay safe while entering and leaving melee range? Favor effects that support sustained close combat, recovery, or reliable repositioning.
Sword + bow Use the bow to pressure from farther away and the sword when an enemy reaches you. Can the pair keep groups from surrounding you while you change distance? Choose effects that make the transition between ranged and melee phases less risky. Look for upgrades that reinforce a clear ranged-to-melee rotation instead of splitting into unrelated bonuses.
Dual blades + bow Alternate between mobile close attacks and ranged pressure. Can your choices answer both a single dangerous target and a crowded approach? Prioritize options that compensate for mistakes made while closing distance. Select Adornments and Vessels that improve the pair’s tempo without forcing every upgrade into one attack type.

This table is an editorial framework, not a claim that one pair is strongest. Switching speed, effective range, crowd control, survivability, and how well your Adornments and Vessels reinforce the pair are the useful comparison axes until fuller balance data is available.

Abilities, Adornments, and Vessels

Abilities are the active or passive tools you unlock as a run develops. Adornments and Vessels add another layer of customization, allowing a weapon pair to become a coherent build rather than two disconnected attack lists. On an early run, choose an upgrade because it improves the plan you are already using: a ranged pair should not be diverted by every close-combat bonus it sees, and a melee pair should not sacrifice all defensive help for a damage number you cannot safely apply.

  • Identify your main job: decide whether the current pair is trying to maintain distance, overwhelm nearby targets, or alternate between those jobs.
  • Take reinforcing choices: select abilities, Adornments, and Vessels that improve the same attack rhythm or cover a known weakness.
  • Keep one emergency answer: reserve at least one option that helps when enemies close in, surround you, or force you away from your preferred range.
  • Record what worked: after death, remember the combinations that changed your survival or control rather than only the largest displayed damage value.

What should I do in my first run?

Your first run is a tutorial you create for yourself. The objective is not to force a deep push with an untested build; it is to learn the movement, switching, upgrade choices, and route tools that will make later attempts faster.

  1. Check your setup. Confirm that the game recognizes your keyboard and mouse or controller, verify the weapon-switch binding, and set aside enough uninterrupted time to observe how a run progresses.
  2. Choose one pair. Start with the two weapons whose ranges you can understand immediately. If you prefer direct engagement, begin with a sword or dual blades; if you want more space, include the bow. These are learning choices, not permanent commitments.
  3. Practice switching before danger. Change weapons while no enemy is pressing you. Then repeat the action while moving so the input becomes part of your normal rhythm.
  4. Read the first upgrade choices. Ask which option improves the pair’s main job. A smaller bonus that you can trigger consistently is more educational than a flashy choice that pulls the build in a direction you cannot yet control.
  5. Test one change at a time. When possible, take a single new ability, Adornment, or Vessel and observe what it changes. If you select several unrelated effects at once, you lose the ability to identify the useful one.
  6. Watch enemy spacing. Notice when an encounter turns dangerous: getting surrounded, losing sight of a ranged threat, or committing to an attack that leaves no safe exit. Those observations tell you whether the next upgrade should improve crowd control, mobility, or survivability.
  7. Use the route tools. When you see a Waystone, remember its position. If you become uncertain about the path, use the compass described below instead of wandering until health or time becomes the real threat.
  8. Let the run end when it has taught you enough. Death advances understanding and strength in the roguelike structure. Treat the result as information: note the weapon pair, the upgrade choices, and the encounter that stopped you.

Do not copy a supposed “best build” from an unverified list. The available official material does not publish a tier list or enough numerical data to establish one, and the point of the first few runs is to learn which tempo you can execute reliably.

How do I find the Waystone?

Waystones are the route landmarks used by the new compass feature. When you need to return toward one, press M on a keyboard or press D-pad Down on a controller. Yi flies toward the Waystone along a golden trail.

  1. Open the compass with M, or D-pad Down on a controller.
  2. Look for the golden trail and follow Yi’s direction rather than guessing from the scenery.
  3. Use the trail whenever a stage route branches or landmarks stop being clear.
  4. Once you reach a Waystone, take a moment to recognize the surrounding terrain so you can orient yourself if the route loops back.

The October 16, 2026 demo update also added mid-stage saving. That makes it less punishing to stop partway through a stage, but it does not remove the need to understand the route: a save is most useful when you know which Waystone or landmark you are leaving behind.

What is new in Heyang?

The October 16, 2026 demo update added the Heyang stage and several related pieces of content. It is the clearest new-region starting point for players returning to the demo, but the final release may rebalance or alter what appears there.

Added content What it means for a beginner
Heyang stage A new area to learn, with its own route and encounters. The published material does not establish its final reward balance.
Xingtian boss A named boss encounter that gives you a new test of positioning, switching, and build consistency.
Zouwu hidden boss An optional discovery target; explore carefully rather than assuming every route is mandatory.
Aquasunder Dual Blades A new named weapon option for players who want to test a different close-combat setup.
New Vessels Additional build components that can change how your chosen weapon pair functions.
Zouwu Spirit Beast A new Spirit Beast associated with the update’s content.
Xiushe, Dijiang, and Zouwu Divine Skills New skill choices to evaluate alongside your weapons, Adornments, and Vessels.
Mid-stage saving You can preserve progress within a stage instead of treating every session as one uninterrupted attempt.
Compass navigation M on keyboard or D-pad Down on controller points Yi toward a Waystone with a golden trail.

The update notes do not establish that every Heyang reward, boss behavior, or named item will remain unchanged at full release. They also do not provide a complete damage ranking for Aquasunder Dual Blades or the new Divine Skills, so test them against your own preferred tempo rather than assuming the newest item is automatically superior.

Exploration habits that save early runs

Mark route logic mentally

Storm-lashed mountains and celestial islands make the setting visually distinctive, but unusual scenery can also make a route harder to read. When you pass a Waystone, note a nearby landmark, a change in elevation, or a recognizable island shape. This turns the environment into a navigation aid when you return from an encounter.

Separate discovery from combat testing

Do not change your weapon pair, chase an optional path, and test several new Vessels in the same moment unless you are comfortable losing the run. On an exploratory attempt, keep the build familiar and use the run to map the stage. On a combat-focused attempt, follow the known route and spend your attention on switching and upgrade timing.

Investigate optional paths after the main route is clear

The hidden Zouwu boss shows that not every meaningful encounter is necessarily placed on the obvious path. First learn how to return to the nearest Waystone with the compass. Then explore side routes when you have enough health, a build you understand, and a clear retreat plan.

Windows requirements and controller setup

Steam lists the following requirements for the current Windows demo listing. They are published minimum and recommended targets, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or visual preset.

Category Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 11 Windows 11
Memory 16 GB RAM 32 GB RAM
Processor AMD Ryzen 3 3100 or Intel Core i3-10100 AMD Ryzen 5 5600 or Intel Core i5-12400
Graphics Radeon 780M, GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, or GeForce GTX 1650 Radeon RX 6700 XT, GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, or GeForce RTX 4060
Storage guidance Not stated SSD recommended

The listing also tags the game as single-player and controller-supported. If your hardware is close to the minimum, close background applications, install the game on an SSD when possible, and begin with conservative graphics settings. Those are general stability steps; the published requirements do not promise identical performance across every Windows configuration.

Input troubleshooting checklist

  • Reconnect the controller before launching if the game does not detect it.
  • Check the in-game control display and confirm that weapon switching has an assigned input.
  • Test keyboard and controller input separately to identify whether the issue is game configuration or hardware-specific.
  • If a remapped button conflicts with another action, assign a distinct input and test it in a safe area before entering a difficult encounter.
  • Keep the compass controls in mind: M for keyboard and D-pad Down for controller in the current demo update.

Demo status, reviews, and what remains uncertain

The free Windows demo released on August 24, 2026. At the indexed Steam snapshot, the demo showed 135 user reviews with 80% positive ratings. That figure describes the snapshot shown on Steam at that time; review totals and the percentage can change.

The full game remains listed as “Coming soon,” and no final release date is established in the available official material. The Heyang additions, including its stage balance, optional encounters, and item tuning, should therefore be understood as current demo content rather than a fixed promise that every detail will ship unchanged.

For a beginner, the practical conclusion is simple: use the demo to learn the systems that are explicitly present now—two-weapon switching, abilities, Adornments, Vessels, Waystones, the compass, and the run-based progression—while keeping expectations flexible about final balance and release timing.

A compact first-session checklist

  • Confirm Windows 11 and compare your processor, graphics hardware, and memory with the published requirements.
  • Verify controller detection or keyboard bindings.
  • Find the weapon-switch input before combat becomes hectic.
  • Choose one weapon pair and define whether it is primarily close-range, ranged, or alternating.
  • Pick upgrades that reinforce that plan instead of collecting unrelated bonuses.
  • Use M or D-pad Down to follow the golden trail to a Waystone when lost.
  • Remember Waystone locations and use mid-stage saving in the current demo to break up a longer stage.
  • After death, record one lesson about spacing, switching, route choice, or upgrade synergy before starting again.
