There is no proven way to transfer a person’s consciousness into a computer or revive a deceased adult. The four ideas often grouped under “digital immortality” pursue different outcomes: lifelogging preserves records, digital twins model a living counterpart, AI avatars generate interactive simulations, and cryonics preserves biological tissue in the hope that future medicine can repair it. Choosing among them starts with deciding whether you want a searchable memory archive, an operational model, a conversational memorial or a speculative chance at biological revival.
Four different goals hidden behind “digital immortality”
The phrase sounds like one technology, but it describes several incompatible projects. A camera archive cannot make decisions like a living person; a predictive model is not automatically a mind; a chatbot that resembles someone is not evidence that their consciousness continues; and cryogenic storage is not a treatment available today.

Use these four goals to identify what a service or project is actually promising:
- Preserve evidence of a life: retain writing, photographs, recordings, locations and other records that can be searched or interpreted later.
- Model a living system: maintain a data-linked representation that mirrors a real-world person or system and supports prediction or decisions.
- Interact with a representation: generate speech, text or behavior in a recognizable style for remembrance, storytelling or family use.
- Attempt biological preservation: keep physical structure after legal death in the hope that a future technology can repair and revive it.
These goals can be combined, but combining them does not change the evidence for any individual method.

Comparison at a glance
| Approach | What is preserved now | What it promises | Connection to a living person | What evidence supports today |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Digital twin | A data-linked model of a real-world entity | Prediction, simulation and decision support | Required by strict definitions; the model updates from its physical counterpart | Useful operational models exist, but no evidence of postmortem consciousness |
| Lifelogging | Personal records, metadata and contextual traces | A rich memory archive and source material for later models | Optional; records may continue after the person dies | Records can be inspected, searched and backed up, but they are incomplete and selective |
| Cryonics | Biological structure after legal death, using cryoprotectants and very low temperatures | Future repair and biological revival | Physical preservation is the intended link | No person developed beyond the embryo stage has been revived from temperatures far below freezing |
| AI avatar | A generated interactive representation based on personal data | Conversation, memorialization and storytelling | Usually no; it is trained or prompted from records | Systems can imitate style and answer questions, but resemblance does not demonstrate identity continuity |
Digital twins: a living, data-connected model
What the term means
The UK government describes a digital twin as a digital representation of a real-world entity with two-way information flow and a continuing relationship with its real-world counterpart. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (2024) describes it as “a set of virtual information constructs that mimics the structure, context, and behavior of a natural, engineered, or social system,” updates dynamically from a physical twin, provides predictive capability and informs decisions. ISO/IEC 30173:2023 supplies shared terminology for types, life-cycle processes, system context and stakeholders.
Those definitions emphasize fidelity, data linkage, validation and a purpose such as prediction or control. A profile assembled after somebody’s death, with no continuing physical counterpart or data feed, may be a memorial or avatar, but it is not a strict digital twin.
How a personal twin would work
- Define the counterpart and purpose. Specify whether the model represents health, routines, preferences, finances or another bounded domain. “A copy of me” is not a measurable requirement.
- Collect and normalize data. Import records such as calendars, sensor streams, writing, health measurements or financial events. Record timestamps, units, missing values and who supplied each item.
- Build the model. Statistical, simulation or machine-learning components infer relationships in the data. Keep raw observations separate from predictions so an operator can audit what was measured and what was inferred.
- Create a two-way connection. A strict twin receives updates from the living counterpart and, where appropriate, sends recommendations or control signals back. The return path needs authentication and an approval policy.
- Validate and monitor drift. Compare predictions with later observations, document error rates and retire the model when its assumptions no longer hold.
What a digital twin cannot establish
A model that predicts your likely choices is not proof that it feels, remembers or owns those choices. Even a highly accurate twin remains a representation whose outputs depend on sensors, training data, objectives and software. If the physical counterpart disappears, the data link and validation loop end; continuing to run the software does not create a surviving subject.

NIST’s 2025 guidance highlights security and trust issues for digital-twin systems. A personal implementation should therefore specify:
- Identity and authentication: which devices and people may write data or request predictions.
- Provenance: where each record originated, when it was changed and whether it was inferred.
- Access control: separate private health, financial, family and public information instead of placing everything in one account.
- Change management: version the model and its training data so an unexpected behavior can be traced.
- Retention and deletion: define who can export or erase the twin and what backups or derived models must also be removed.
Lifelogging: preserving records, not a brain
What to capture
Lifelogging is the deliberate collection of a person’s writing, photographs, audio, video, location, biometric measurements and other records so experiences can be searched, remembered or later used as source material. A practical archive can include:

- scanned letters, certificates, artwork and other physical documents;
- voice samples and pronunciation examples, only with explicit consent for later use;
- an index that explains people, places, nicknames, languages and events that outsiders would not recognize.
A durable collection workflow
- Write a scope statement. Decide which years, relationships and subjects are in or out. Avoid collecting everyone else’s private data merely because your device can.
- Keep originals. Store untouched source files alongside working copies. Preserve creation dates and document any format conversion.
- Add context while you remember it. A short caption identifying people, location, event and uncertainty is often more valuable than another unlabelled image.
- Use at least two independent copies. Maintain one copy in a different physical or administrative location and test restoration periodically.
- Plan format migration. Re-export files before a proprietary application or storage medium becomes unreadable. Keep a simple inventory of codecs, encryption keys and software needed to open the archive.
- Set an inheritance rule. Name a custodian, explain who may access which categories and provide a way to revoke access if circumstances change.
What the archive can and cannot preserve
Lifelogging offers breadth and evidentiary traceability: a future reader can inspect what you recorded rather than relying on a system’s claim that it “knows” you. It also has unavoidable blind spots. People do not record every moment, devices fail, metadata can be wrong, and private experiences may be omitted deliberately. The resulting archive is a selection of observations, not a scan of a brain, a complete memory stream or proof that the recorded person survives.
Digital-immortality literature distinguishes life-data representations from whole-brain emulation. Describing a lifelog as “memory preservation” or “source material for a future model” is supportable; describing it as personal survival is not established.

AI avatars: interactive simulations built from personal data
How an avatar is assembled
An AI avatar uses records such as writing, voice, images, preferences or biographical facts to generate responses or behavior in a recognizable style. Depending on the system, it may combine a language model, a searchable personal archive, speech synthesis, an animated face and rules that limit what it can claim. The output is generated at request time; it is not a recording of an inner stream of consciousness.
- Choose the purpose. A family memorial, a storytelling guide and a customer-service representative require different data and boundaries.
- Prepare the source set. Remove irrelevant or confidential material, label dates and authorship, and separate the person’s own words from quotations by others.
- Define behavior rules. State which topics the avatar must decline, how it should express uncertainty and whether it may initiate contact.
- Disclose the simulation. Every interface should make clear that replies are generated and that the original person is not operating the system.
- Test for fabrication and harm. Check whether it invents memories, gives unsafe advice, reveals third-party secrets or presents guesses as the person’s authentic view.
- Provide control. Give authorized people export, pause, deletion and inheritance controls, including deletion of indexes, voice models and backups where feasible.
Identity, consent and grief
Conversational continuity can feel persuasive, especially when a system uses familiar phrases or a cloned voice. Behavioral similarity is nevertheless not demonstrated identity continuity. The avatar may generate a sentence the person never said, combine incompatible periods of their life or change as the underlying model is updated.
Consent should cover collection, model training, voice or likeness synthesis, posthumous operation, permitted audiences and commercial use. A person can authorize a memorial without authorizing a financial agent or a system that speaks to children. Posthumous authorization should identify who may pause or delete the service, how disputes are handled and which records remain private. Interfaces should also offer a clear way to stop interaction; an always-on simulation can complicate mourning or encourage dependency.

Cryonics: preservation after legal death
What the procedure claims to do
Alcor defines cryonics as low-temperature preservation of people who can no longer be sustained by today’s medicine, after legal death, in the expectation that future technology may heal and resuscitate them. Modern protocols use cryoprotectants and controlled cooling to reach vitrification, a glass-like state with little or no ice, followed by storage in liquid nitrogen at about -196°C.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe sequence is not an emergency treatment that reverses death. Legal death is declared under the applicable jurisdiction’s rules; preservation then attempts to limit additional structural damage. The hoped-for future intervention would have to repair disease, ischemic injury, toxic effects of cryoprotectants and damage caused by cooling or warming, then restore functioning.
The present evidence boundary
Alcor’s FAQ states: “At this point in time, no person developed beyond the embryo stage has been revived from temperatures far below freezing.” That means cryonics is a forward-looking preservation bet, not a demonstrated therapy or a current route to immortality. Successful preservation of embryos or short-term cooling of some tissues does not demonstrate revival of a legally dead adult with an intact personal identity.
Practical and ethical considerations
- Timing: delays between legal death and perfusion can increase injury, so arrangements must be made before a crisis and coordinated with local law and medical providers.
- Biological uncertainty: preserving anatomy does not prove that memories or the information needed for a future mind remain recoverable.
- Financial continuity: long-term storage depends on an organization, funding arrangements, facilities and future governance that cannot be guaranteed.
- Family authority: relatives, clinicians and the preservation provider may have conflicting instructions; documents should state who has decision-making power.
- Future dependence: revival requires breakthroughs in repair, diagnostics and safe reanimation that do not currently exist.
Robert C. W. Ettinger’s 1964 book The Prospect of Immortality is identified by Alcor as the landmark work that brought the cryonics case to a wide audience. Its historical influence should not be confused with clinical evidence of revival.
Which option fits your goal?
| If your priority is… | Best-fitting approach | Why | Main limitation to accept |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finding and sharing memories | Lifelogging | You control a searchable archive of original records | Gaps, bias, privacy exposure and obsolete formats |
| Forecasting or managing a living system | Digital twin | It links measurements to a real-world counterpart and can be validated against outcomes | It is a model, not a conscious duplicate; the link must be maintained |
| Talking with a recognizable memorial | AI avatar | It can turn records into an interactive experience | Generated behavior can be wrong, manipulative or mistaken for the person |
| Seeking possible future biological restoration | Cryonics | It is the only option here that claims to preserve biological structure for eventual revival | No adult human revival from cryogenic temperatures has been demonstrated |
Combining approaches without confusing their claims
A sensible plan can use more than one method while keeping their evidence boundaries separate. Lifelogging can supply well-documented source material for an avatar. A living person’s health or routine model can use digital-twin methods, while selected records are archived for family use. Cryonics arrangements can coexist with an estate plan that grants relatives access to a separate memory archive.

Do not market the combination as a “complete digital self.” Each layer preserves something different: observations, a predictive model, generated behavior or biological structure. Label those layers in storage, contracts and user interfaces so a future custodian can tell which statements are recorded facts, model predictions and generated replies.

Before collecting intimate data or commissioning a model, document decisions that are easy to overlook:
- What categories are collected, and which people besides you appear in them?
- Can another person request access, correction or deletion of their image, voice or messages?
- May the data be used to train a new model, or only to search and display originals?
- Who can operate an avatar or twin if you lose capacity, and who can stop it?
- What happens to encrypted backups, derived embeddings, voice models and vendor logs?
- How will the system show uncertainty, provenance and the date of its last update?
- Which jurisdiction’s law controls medical decisions, contracts and posthumous rights?
- How will children, grieving relatives and other vulnerable users be protected from deceptive or unwanted interaction?
Common claims that do not hold up
“A chatbot trained on my messages is me.”
It is a generated representation that draws statistical patterns from your messages. It may sound familiar without sharing your memories, awareness or point of view.
“A digital twin is a digital person.”
In established standards, a twin is tied to a real-world entity and used for monitoring, prediction or decisions. The label does not confer personhood or consciousness.

“Cryonics has already revived people.”
No person developed beyond the embryo stage has been revived from temperatures far below freezing, according to Alcor’s stated evidence boundary. Future repair remains hypothetical.
A decision process you can use today
- Write the desired outcome in one sentence. For example: “My family should be able to find the story behind my photographs,” or “I want a model that forecasts my medication response while I am alive.”
- Separate present capability from future hope. Mark each requirement as available now, technically plausible but unproven, or dependent on discoveries that do not yet exist.
- Choose the least invasive data set. Collect only what the stated purpose needs, and exclude other people’s information unless they have agreed.
- Set provenance and access rules before deployment. Decide who can read originals, who can run models, and who can delete or export them.
- Test failure modes. Try corrupted files, missing context, contradictory records, unauthorized prompts and a request to stop the system. Document the response.
- Review at a fixed interval. Re-check storage, encryption, model behavior, legal instructions and the wishes of people represented in the archive.
The most defensible path for memory is a maintained, well-described archive. The most defensible path for operational prediction is a validated twin tied to a living counterpart. An avatar can add conversation when its synthetic nature and limits are obvious. Cryonics remains an unproven wager on future biological repair rather than a result demonstrated by current medicine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I give an AI avatar permission to make decisions for my estate?
Treat that as a separate legal and technical authorization, not an automatic feature of a memorial. Name a human fiduciary, define the avatar’s narrow permitted actions, require authentication and logging, and state when its authority ends.
What files should a long-term life archive use?
Keep original files plus documented, widely supported copies, preserve metadata separately, and maintain an inventory of formats, encryption keys and software dependencies. No format is permanently future-proof, so scheduled migration and restoration tests are necessary.
Does legal death mean cryonics starts immediately everywhere?
No. Declaration of death, transport, consent and preservation procedures depend on local law, medical practice and the provider’s arrangements. Any plan must be reviewed with qualified professionals in the relevant jurisdiction.
Can an avatar prove what a deceased person would have wanted?
No. It can retrieve records or generate a plausible response, but plausibility is not evidence of an authentic posthumous intention. Use signed instructions and identifiable source documents for consequential decisions.
