Short answer: Toy Story: Retro Roundup! is not one newly remade Toy Story game and it is not a one-to-one replacement for a single Genesis, Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) or Game Boy cartridge. It is a current-platform preservation collection that gathers several early Toy Story-era releases, multiple console and handheld versions, and Digital Eclipse’s historical extras in one package. Original hardware still offers the exact behavior, display characteristics, sound and physical collecting experience of each system; Retro Roundup is the more practical way to access the catalogue and its documentary material.
What Toy Story: Retro Roundup! actually is
Retro Roundup is a curated re-release built around early licensed games rather than a brand-new entry. Nintendo describes it as a five-game collection containing console and handheld versions of four early Toy Story titles plus A Bug’s Life. Atari’s catalogue description names Toy Story (1995), Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue!, Toy Story 2, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command and Toy Story Racer, with A Bug’s Life listed as the additional title.

Those descriptions do not present the count in exactly the same way. The safest interpretation is that the package groups several related releases and their system versions under a five-game collection label, while the publisher’s catalogue copy enumerates the individual games it represents. Check the final platform listing and the collection’s in-game menu for the exact grouping in your edition; do not assume that every named title is a separate, wholly unique modern remake.

What you get in the collection that an original cartridge did not include
Several versions in one purchase
An original owner normally bought one cartridge or disc for one platform. To experience Genesis, SNES and Game Boy versions, you needed the respective console or handheld, the physical software and a way to connect or power that hardware. Retro Roundup consolidates the represented console and handheld builds in a current-platform release, so the comparison is between one curated package and an individual original release.
Digital Eclipse’s historical presentation
Nintendo’s product description highlights a behind-the-scenes experience produced with Digital Eclipse. Named interview participants include Jason Katz, Pixar’s head of story; Jim Hanks, a voice actor; Luigi Priore, Disney and Pixar Games vice president and general manager; and Jon Burton, founder of TT Games. D23 describes five behind-the-scenes featurettes and a music player as part of the anniversary presentation.
These are substantial additions for anyone interested in how the games were made, voiced and published. A cartridge contains the game data for its platform; it does not contain this collection-wide documentary layer, interview program or dedicated music-listening feature.

Current-platform access
Nintendo lists a Switch edition, which removes the need to source aging cartridges, original video cables and working legacy systems. Digital Eclipse says that “with every new project, Digital Eclipse strives to set the gold standard for classic game re-releases.” That is a preservation goal and a presentation promise, not a claim that every historical build has been technically rewritten into one identical version.
Collection versus original releases: the practical differences
| Comparison point | Retro Roundup | Original Genesis, SNES or Game Boy release |
|---|---|---|
| What you buy | One current-platform collection containing the represented console and handheld catalogue, plus presentation extras. | A separate cartridge or disc for a particular system and region. |
| Version coverage | Multiple versions are gathered in one package; Nintendo’s listing describes a five-game collection, while Atari’s catalogue copy names the individual titles and A Bug’s Life. | Only the exact build on the cartridge or disc you own. |
| Hardware | Runs on a supported modern platform such as Nintendo Switch through the collection’s preservation technology. | Runs on the original console or handheld, or compatible legacy hardware. |
| Display and audio character | Presented through the modern release’s video, audio and input settings; the official descriptions do not publish a complete per-ROM technical specification. | Uses the original system’s video output, sound hardware, timing and controller behavior. |
| Historical material | Interviews, five featurettes described by D23, archival/context material and a music player. | Normally no documentary package beyond whatever was printed in the box or manual. |
| Physical collecting | Available as a modern software release; a physical Retro Roundup plus Toy Story 3 Complete Edition double pack is also advertised by Atari. | Original cartridges, discs, boxes and manuals can be collected individually. |
| Availability | One current purchase, subject to platform availability, edition and stock. | Depends on finding working hardware and a genuine copy in the secondary market. |
Why Genesis, SNES and Game Boy versions can feel different
The source games were designed for systems with different processors, graphics hardware, sound chips, screen formats and controllers. Even when the level design and story premise are related, a platform version can have its own presentation and handling. You should expect the original hardware experience to preserve those system-specific traits rather than treating every version as interchangeable.
Genesis
The Genesis version is the reference point for players who want the game as it appeared on Sega’s 16-bit hardware. Its color output, sound and controller response belong to that system and to the particular regional cartridge. Retro Roundup can make the Genesis build easier to launch, but it cannot turn a modern screen and controller into the electrical and display behavior of an original Genesis setup.

Super Nintendo Entertainment System
The SNES release is a separate build, not simply a cosmetic setting applied to the Genesis game. Its graphics and audio were authored for Nintendo hardware, and its controller layout can change how movement and actions feel. The official collection descriptions establish that multiple system versions are included, but they do not publish a frame-by-frame or level-by-level technical diff. Claims about exact sprite changes, soundtrack edits or frame-rate differences therefore require a separately verified primary technical source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGame Boy
The Game Boy version reflects a handheld design with a much smaller display and different input limitations. Its monochrome presentation and portable controls are part of the historical identity of that release. Playing it inside a modern collection gives you access without a working Game Boy, but it does not make the original cartridge’s screen, battery-powered context or physical controls reappear.
Regional and revision differences
Cartridges can vary by territory, manufacturing revision or release packaging. Retro Roundup is a curated selection; it should not automatically be described as every regional ROM ever sold. The official pages do not provide a complete per-region inventory, so collectors who need a particular revision should retain the original software or verify that specific build from a technical source before buying.

Preservation convenience versus hardware authenticity
What the collection makes easier
- Launching several represented games from one current device instead of switching between legacy systems.
- Accessing console and handheld versions without hunting for cartridges, batteries, cables or replacement controllers.
- Viewing interviews and featurettes in the same interface as the games.
- Listening to the included music-player material without extracting audio from old hardware.
- Keeping a single modern installation or cartridge available for travel and routine play.
What original hardware still does better
- Reproducing the timing, controller feel, video signal and sound output of the original machine.
- Preserving the exact physical media, packaging and manuals used by collectors.
- Providing access to a specific cartridge revision or regional variant when that edition is not represented in the curated collection.
- Showing how the game behaved with period televisions, handheld displays and original accessories.
Neither option is universally “more authentic.” Retro Roundup is authentic as a preservation presentation of selected releases; an original cartridge is authentic to its own hardware, region and physical media. The distinction matters most if you are comparing speed-running behavior, display artifacts, audio output or a particular regional revision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse Retro Roundup with Toy Story 3 Complete Edition
Atari markets Toy Story 3 Complete Edition separately. Its product page advertises upgraded graphics of up to 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, depending on platform. That specification belongs to the 2010 game’s modern remaster. It is not a blanket specification for the earlier titles in Retro Roundup.

A physical Retro Roundup plus Toy Story 3 Complete Edition double pack may place both products in one box, but they remain different releases with different scopes. Buying the bundle does not convert the 16-bit and handheld games into 4K remasters, nor does buying Retro Roundup alone give you the complete-edition version of Toy Story 3.

Which version should you choose?
Choose Retro Roundup if you want the catalogue in one place
The collection is the practical choice when your priority is convenient access to several early games, the ability to sample different console and handheld versions, and historical context from Digital Eclipse. It is also the lower-friction option if you no longer own a working Genesis, SNES or Game Boy, or if your modern display lacks the connections those systems used.
Choose original releases if you are a hardware-focused collector
Original cartridges and discs make sense when the physical object, a specific regional build, period-accurate audiovisual output or original controller response is the point. They also let you compare the game exactly as it behaves on your own legacy setup. Expect higher effort: hardware condition, authenticity, battery status, video adapters and seller quality all become part of the purchase.
Choose both for a complete comparison
Collectors and preservation-minded players can use Retro Roundup as the accessible catalogue and retain original copies for verification and hardware study. That approach separates two goals that are often confused: convenient preservation access and exact reproduction of a particular machine’s behavior.
How to identify the right product before buying
- Search the product phrase
Toy Story Retro Roundup Nintendo Switch, which matches Nintendo’s listed Switch edition. - Read the platform listing’s game-count and included-title section. Nintendo’s description uses a five-game collection label; Atari’s catalogue text enumerates the named Toy Story titles and A Bug’s Life.
- Confirm whether you are viewing Retro Roundup, Toy Story 3 Complete Edition or the advertised physical double pack. The 4K/60-FPS claim applies to the latter remaster, not automatically to Retro Roundup.
- Check whether the seller is offering a physical copy or a digital license, and verify region compatibility for any physical edition.
- Check current price, stock and seller reputation at the time of purchase. Those details change and are not fixed specifications of the collection.
Known limits of the published specifications
The official product descriptions establish the collection’s catalogue scope, platform-version concept and documentary extras, but they do not publish a complete technical comparison for every original regional build. There is no official per-level or per-ROM table in the available descriptions covering exact sprite sets, soundtrack edits, frame rates, input latency or every control change. Treat such details as unverified unless a primary technical source documents them.
Likewise, no independently published sales or performance statistic is established here. The release context is tied to the Toy Story 30th-anniversary campaign described by D23, not to a published benchmark or sales result.
Bottom line for a Genesis, SNES or Game Boy owner
Retro Roundup gives you breadth and context: several early Toy Story-era releases, console and handheld versions in one current package, and Digital Eclipse’s interviews, featurettes, archival presentation and music player. An original cartridge gives you depth in one exact branch: its hardware timing, audiovisual character, controls, region and physical history. Buy the collection for consolidated access and preservation extras; keep or seek original releases when authentic hardware behavior and collecting are the priority.
