The Panasonic LUMIX FZ80D offers a budget-oriented 60x range, while the Nikon COOLPIX P1000 reaches much farther at 125x. Neither is automatically best for every buyer: both use small sensors, and the P1000 trades portability for extreme reach. For better image quality and autofocus in a bridge camera, the Sony RX10 V takes a different approach with a larger sensor and shorter zoom.
What kind of zoom camera should you buy?
Bridge cameras pair a fixed, built-in lens with a wide zoom range in one body. They suit people who want to photograph subjects at varying distances without changing lenses, including on travel, family outings, sports sidelines, or wildlife trips. For long optical reach in an all-in-one camera, this category is the most direct fit.

A long zoom ratio is only one part of the decision. Bridge cameras generally use smaller sensors than crop-sensor or full-frame interchangeable-lens cameras, which limits image quality in difficult light and can matter when making large prints. If low-light performance or large output is a priority, consider an interchangeable-lens system instead of choosing by zoom range alone. Digital Camera World’s zoom-camera guide covers both compact and bridge approaches.
Three zoom cameras for different priorities
| Camera | Best fit | Key specifications | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Panasonic LUMIX FZ80D | Lower-cost all-in-one reach | 60x optical zoom; 20–1200mm full-frame equivalent; 1/2.3-inch sensor | Image quality is best judged within its class and in bright conditions, according to RTINGS. |
| Nikon COOLPIX P1000 | Maximum reach in a fixed-lens camera | 125x optical zoom; 24–3000mm full-frame equivalent | Its bulky body and small sensor are less suited to lightweight travel or difficult light; support helps at the long end. |
| Sony RX10 V | Image quality and autofocus over maximum reach | 1-inch stacked 20MP sensor; stabilized 24–600mm f/2.4–4 lens; 25x optical zoom | Shorter reach than the P1000, and TechRadar cited a US launch price of $2,300 in its July 9, 2026 review; that is launch pricing, not a current offer. |
RTINGS identifies the FZ80D and P1000 as bridge-camera options, while its zoom-camera guide discusses the P1000’s handling and long-range limitations. See its bridge-camera comparison and zoom-camera comparison. TechRadar’s Sony RX10 V review describes the camera’s sensor, lens, autofocus, and launch price.

How to choose based on what you photograph
Travel and everyday family photos
Consider how much weight and bulk you are willing to carry before prioritizing maximum reach. A bridge camera avoids carrying multiple lenses, but the P1000 is specifically described as heavy and bulky by RTINGS. For ordinary travel scenes, a shorter range may be a more useful trade than carrying a camera built around extreme telephoto framing.
Wildlife, distant subjects, and sports
Choose reach according to the distance you actually need to cover. The P1000’s 24–3000mm equivalent range is the extreme-reach option here; the FZ80D’s 20–1200mm equivalent range provides substantial reach in a less specialized proposition. At long focal lengths, camera shake becomes harder to control, so a tripod can be useful, particularly near the P1000’s maximum reach. For moving subjects, also assess autofocus tracking and handling rather than relying on focal length alone.
Rank #2
- 52x Optical Zoom Camera: Reach distant subjects with a 24mm wide angle lens spanning sweeping landscapes to tight telephoto shots of birds, wildlife, and athletes; genuine optical sharpness, not a digital crop
- 6fps Burst Mode: Catch the decisive moment in fast action; 6fps shooting captures rapid sequences of wildlife and sports, then review on the 3in LCD and keep the sharpest frame
- 16MP BSI CMOS Sensor: Sharp, detailed images with better low-light performance; built-in OIS counters hand movement even at full 52x reach, so handheld telephoto shots stay crisp without a tripod
- Built-in Wi-Fi: Share straight from the field; connect to your phone or tablet to transfer photos and post immediately, or use the phone as a live remote viewfinder; 1080p Full HD video records smooth sequences
- Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery: Power extended sessions in the field; accepts Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 1.5TB for thousands of photos and hours of Full HD video across a full day of shooting
Low light, image quality, and larger prints
Sensor size matters alongside lens range. The FZ80D and P1000 have small 1/2.3-inch sensors, which are a compromise for image quality in challenging light. The Sony RX10 V’s 1-inch stacked sensor is larger and its zoom is shorter, illustrating the trade-off between reach and sensor/handling priorities. If low-light results or large prints are central, an interchangeable-lens camera with a larger sensor is worth considering.

What to check before buying
- Optical range: Compare the full-frame-equivalent focal-length range, not just the zoom ratio. A large ratio does not by itself tell you how wide the lens starts or how useful the long end will be.
- Sensor and intended output: Match sensor size to lighting conditions and whether you plan to make large prints.
- Portability: Check dimensions and weight for the trips or activities where you will use the camera.
- Stabilization and support: Long telephoto shooting magnifies movement; consider whether the camera’s stabilization and your willingness to use a tripod suit the way you shoot.
- Autofocus and controls: For sports, wildlife, or active children, examine subject tracking and whether the viewfinder, screen, and controls are comfortable to use.
- Video and total cost: Confirm video features against your needs, then check current regional availability and the complete cost before deciding.
