Not on the available midyear comparisons. Through June 30, 2026, Fidelity’s technology index outperformed its energy index, while J.P. Morgan’s figures showed technology narrowly ahead. Energy funds later posted a strong year-to-date return, but the reported number has no matching technology figure, so it does not establish a win over tech.
Did energy stock funds beat technology funds in 2026?
The answer depends on the measurement period and which investments are being compared. The available like-for-like midyear figures do not support the claim that energy beat technology.

| Source and measure | Technology | Energy | Cutoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fidelity: year-to-date cumulative returns for MSCI IMI sector indexes | 27.28% | 20.90% | June 30, 2026 |
| J.P. Morgan Asset Management: year-to-date sector performance | 19.8% | 19.7% | June 30, 2026 |
These are separate provider-reported comparisons, not interchangeable fund returns. Fidelity names the MSCI IMI Information Technology 25/50 and MSCI IMI Energy 25/50 indexes; J.P. Morgan reports sector performance in its own ETF midyear report. The figures should be read within each source’s universe rather than combined into a single ranking. Fidelity’s 2026 Equity Sector Mid-Year Update and J.P. Morgan’s U.S. ETF Midyear Report give the respective details.

Why a later energy return does not settle the comparison
ETF Action reported a 45.29% year-to-date return for energy sector funds as of September 7, 2026. The available report excerpt does not provide a comparable technology return. That number shows a strong result for energy over the stated period; by itself, it cannot establish that energy outperformed technology. The source is ETF Action’s September 7, 2026 sector-fund update.

What a fair fund comparison needs
A headline such as “this time” is meaningful only when the comparison identifies its dates, investment universe, and return measure. Before treating two sector funds as winners and losers, check:
- Period and cutoff: Is the figure calendar year-to-date, a trailing period, or another interval? What is the exact end date?
- Universe: Are these index results, ETF categories, mutual funds, or a selected list of individual funds? An index comparison is not automatically a ranking of funds investors could buy.
- Return basis: Is the reported figure cumulative or annualized, and does it use NAV or market price? Check how distributions are handled where specified.
- What the funds hold: Sector labels do not make funds identical. Holdings and concentration matter when comparing particular products.
The cited material does not establish a consistent roster of energy and technology funds with comparable holdings, expenses, or standardized NAV total returns. A broader fund-by-fund verdict cannot be drawn from these figures alone.
Flows are not performance
Investor allocations answer a different question from investment returns. State Street reported year-to-date net ETF flows through June 30, 2026 of $9.421 billion for energy and $44.760 billion for technology. Those amounts describe money flowing into funds, not how much either sector’s investments gained. State Street’s first-half ETF flows report also describes Industrials as the best-performing sector so far in 2026, underscoring why flows and performance should not be conflated.

The midyear comparisons put technology slightly or substantially ahead, depending on the provider’s measure. A later energy-sector ETF figure is strong but lacks a corresponding technology result. Without the original ranking’s date range and fund list, the title’s broad claim that energy funds were the winners cannot be verified from the available comparisons.
