Bitcoin life insurer Meanwhile announced a $37.5 million funding round led by Bain Capital Crypto on October 8, 2026. The company says the round brings its total fundraising to more than $180 million. While Sam Altman is among Meanwhile’s backers, the announcement does not identify him as a participant in this specific round.

Who invested in Meanwhile’s latest round?

According to Meanwhile’s company-issued announcement, Bain Capital Crypto led the $37.5 million round. Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures and Morgan Creek Digital also participated. The company described the participants as existing investors.

Meanwhile Incorporated is the parent company of Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited. The company says the new financing brings cumulative fundraising to more than $180 million. These are figures reported in the October 8, 2026 announcement, not independently verified totals.

What does Meanwhile sell?

Meanwhile offers Bitcoin-denominated life insurance. The company says it launched BTC Life 1-Pay in early 2026 as a single-premium whole-life policy for high-net-worth clients outside the United States. Its BTC 10-Pay product is designed for U.S. taxpayers. The announcement does not provide full policy terms, premiums, or eligibility details.

The company presents the products as a way to pass Bitcoin to beneficiaries through life insurance. Co-founder and CEO Zac Townsend said, “Wealthy families around the world already hold Bitcoin. What they haven’t had is a regulated way to pass it on.” He added that brokers approached Meanwhile in response to client demand. Those comments are the CEO’s explanation of the company’s rationale, not independent evidence of market demand.

How do the two policy lines differ?

Policy Intended market, as described by Meanwhile Premium structure
BTC Life 1-Pay High-net-worth clients outside the United States Single premium
BTC 10-Pay Designed for U.S. taxpayers Not stated in the October 8, 2026 announcement

This is a distinction in the company’s product descriptions, not a complete comparison of coverage or suitability. Eligibility, policy terms, and availability must be confirmed with a licensed intermediary in the relevant jurisdiction.

Who can access the policies?

Availability is limited. The announcement says the Bermuda insurer is licensed to transact long-term business with Sophisticated Persons only, that its products are not available in every jurisdiction, and that distribution occurs through appropriately licensed intermediaries where permitted. The company’s descriptions of a product for clients outside the United States and one designed for U.S. taxpayers do not mean either policy is available to every person in those groups.

What is known about Meanwhile’s license and operations?

Meanwhile says its Bermuda subsidiary received a Class IILT license from the Bermuda Monetary Authority in July 2024, after spending two years in the regulator’s sandbox. The company describes this as the first Class IILT license granted by the authority.

The same announcement says the insurer’s balance sheet, reserves, and audited financial statements are denominated in Bitcoin, and that policyholder Bitcoin is held with regulated institutional custodians. These operational details are claims made by the company in its release; the announcement does not independently verify them.

What did Meanwhile say about its growth?

The company reported that net long-term underwriting income had already exceeded the prior year’s total and was on track to more than double in 2026. The announcement did not include the underlying income-statement figures alongside that claim, so the growth statement should be treated as company-reported rather than independently demonstrated.

Bain Capital Crypto partner Stefan Cohen said, “Meanwhile owns every layer of a regulated life insurer and builds it like an AI-enabled startup.” He also said the growth this year showed the model was working. These are an investor’s comments in the company announcement, not a third-party assessment.
