Did Apple cut iPhone 16 orders?
Public reports described analyst estimates, not an Apple announcement or verified count of phones sold. On October 1, 2024, 9to5Mac reported that Barclays analysts believed Apple may have reduced orders by roughly 3 million units at a key semiconductor supplier for the December quarter, based on supply-channel checks. On October 23, 9to5Mac reported Kuo’s estimate of a roughly 10 million-unit reduction across 4Q24–1H25, with most cuts affecting non-Pro models. These are separate analyst claims: the first concerns a possible component-order change for one quarter; the second covers a longer period and is described as an iPhone order estimate. Why did analysts think production or orders might be lower?
Shorter early delivery estimates
One signal cited in the coverage was shorter early delivery lead time compared with the previous iPhone cycle. Morgan Stanley figures reported by AppleInsider put average lead times at 25.5 days for iPhone 16 Pro Max, versus 43.5 days for iPhone 15 Pro Max, and 18.5 days for iPhone 16 Pro, versus 32.5 days for iPhone 15 Pro. Barclays reportedly also cited shorter wait times across major regions, the staggered rollout of Apple Intelligence and its limited adoption outside the United States at the time, and what it viewed as limited hardware differentiation. Why lead times do not prove weaker demand
A delivery estimate reflects both demand and how much stock is available. Shorter waits can mean fewer orders, but they can also result from stronger initial supply or inventory planning. Morgan Stanley cautioned that early lead-time data had “very limited predictive power,” as quoted by AppleInsider.
There was also a counterpoint in the Pro models: an Investing.com report of Morgan Stanley’s September 27 assessment said their lead times had extended by roughly two days between T+11 and T+14. The bank did not interpret an adjustment to TSMC wafer orders as evidence of weaker iPhone 16 demand, suggesting excess processor inventory as a possible explanation. Does Apple’s revenue confirm the order-cut reports?
No. Apple reported fiscal fourth-quarter 2024 iPhone revenue of $46.22 billion, up 6% year over year, according to The Associated Press. The July–September quarter included only the first few days of iPhone 16 sales. Revenue covers Apple’s iPhone category as a whole and does not disclose model-by-model unit sales, so it neither confirms nor rules out the later analyst estimates.
