Blizzard’s 2.5.0 Public Test Realm (PTR) description lists Lair Boss Keys as the reward for surviving a World Boss encounter with Essence of Hellfire equipped. It does not list forge or salvage materials as a Hellfire reward. These details describe the PTR, not verified live-game rules for October 2026.
What does Essence of Hellfire reward?
In Blizzard’s 2.5.0 PTR overview, surviving a World Boss encounter while Essence of Hellfire is slotted earns Lair Boss Keys. Blizzard’s wording is: “Rewards: Survive World Boss encounters to earn Lair Boss Keys, doubled while Purified.” The description does not provide an exact key count or establish that every encounter yields the same number. Read the 2.5.0 PTR overview.

Does Hellfire drop forge or salvage materials?
The reviewed PTR description does not name forge, crafting, or salvage materials as Essence of Hellfire rewards. It assigns Salvage Materials to Essence of Screams, a different Divine Gift associated with completing the Kurast Undercity; that gift’s rewards are also doubled while Purified. Do not treat that separate reward track as evidence that Hellfire World Bosses drop salvage materials.
How do Purified, Corrupted, and rank change the rewards?
Purified
The PTR description says Purified Essence of Hellfire doubles its Lair Boss Key reward. It also gives direct damage a 10% chance to stun enemies for one second. That 10% is a stun-effect chance, not a key drop rate.

- Embark on the campaign solo or with friends, meeting memorable characters through beautifully dark settings and a gripping story, or explore an expansive end game and shared world where players can meet in towns to trade, team up to battle World Bosses, or descend into PVP zones to test their skills against other players - no lobbies necessary - with cross-play and cross-progression on all available platforms.
Corrupted
While the gift is Corrupted, meteors rain down on the player during World Boss fights. The PTR description says the gift still grants its reward bonus; it does not state an exact key quantity.
Rank upgrades
Higher ranks improve key quality. At Rank 2, the weekly cache includes a large number of Lair Boss Keys; at Rank 5, more keys drop across Sanctuary. Blizzard does not specify exact amounts in the description, so neither benefit can be converted into a reliable count from this source.

How is Essence of Hellfire connected to Azmodan?
The PTR overview says Essence of Hellfire is earned by battling Azmodan in the Overworld. It also describes Azmodan as a World Boss summonable at altars south of Zarbinzet. This explains the gift’s connection to the boss, while the listed key reward is triggered by surviving World Boss encounters with the gift slotted. The PTR text does not establish whether those details or locations remain unchanged in the live game. Blizzard’s PTR overview reproduced by Blue Tracker.
Are these the current live drop rules?
No current live-game source is established here. The available detail comes from Blizzard’s 2.5.0 PTR overview, so it should not be read as confirmation of the October 2026 live rules. The description does not verify whether the reward, key tiers, quantities, or modifiers carried over unchanged. For current play, check the in-game Divine Gift description or current official patch notes; do not assume the PTR’s unspecified quantities are fixed live drop rates.
