Put flight essentials and anything you cannot risk being separated from in the personal item under the seat; use the larger carry-on for belongings you do not need in flight. Before packing, check the rules for every operating airline and aircraft on your itinerary: size limits and overhead space vary, and a carry-on may be gate-checked.
What belongs in each bag?
Personal item: essentials within reach
Choose a bag that fits beneath the seat when packed. Keep travel documents, medication, phone, laptop or other small electronics, charging needs, valuables, and a light layer here. The personal item is the best place for items you need during the flight and belongings you want to keep with you if your carry-on is checked.

Airlines do not use one universal personal-item size. Delta gives a purse, laptop bag, or small backpack of similar size as examples, provided it fits under the seat. American Airlines requires a personal item to fit under the seat and publishes a maximum of 18 × 14 × 8 inches. Check the operating carrier’s rule and account for the space beneath your particular seat; an example bag type does not guarantee that every model will fit.

Put belongings you do not need during the flight in the larger carry-on, provided your ticket allows one and it meets the operating airline’s limits. American Airlines and Delta Air Lines each publish a carry-on size of 22 × 14 × 9 inches, including handles and wheels. These are carrier-specific examples, not a universal standard. American says the bag must fit the airport sizer and in the overhead bin or beneath a seat.
