Desktop as a Service (DaaS) delivers virtual desktops or applications from hosted infrastructure over a network. People use them through supported computers, thin clients, tablets, phones, browsers, or client apps. The provider and customer share management duties according to the service: the DaaS label alone does not mean the provider handles every desktop, application, or security task.
How does Desktop as a Service work?
A desktop environment runs on a virtual machine in a provider’s cloud or other hosted infrastructure. The service sends the desktop or applications to the user’s endpoint, while processing and storage are handled by the hosted environment. Users can connect through a browser or installed client on a conventional computer or mobile device; a thin client is optional.

The provider may manage the underlying virtual desktop infrastructure, maintenance, security updates, backup, and storage. The customer may still manage desktop images and application installation. The exact division varies by service and deployment, so assess the operating model and responsibility boundary rather than assuming a fully managed desktop. Citrix’s DaaS glossary defines the model as virtual applications and desktop services delivered through a public or private cloud service.

When is DaaS a good fit?
DaaS can help organizations provide a consistent desktop to people who work across locations or whose access needs change over time. Potential users include remote and distributed employees, contractors, temporary training cohorts, and developers who need on-demand workstations. AWS lists back-office and administrative work, knowledge work, training, and developer workstations among possible Amazon WorkSpaces use cases. GPU-enabled configurations may suit graphics-intensive workloads, subject to provider capabilities and workload requirements.

Central hosting can reduce the need to build and maintain on-premises VDI infrastructure, make it easier to scale desktop capacity, or keep data in a hosted desktop rather than on an endpoint. These are potential design advantages, not automatic results: performance and security depend on configuration, identity controls, network design, endpoint settings, patching, backup, and who is responsible for each task. AWS’s End User Computing Lens discusses the service model and its design considerations.
Persistent desktops, pooled desktops, and other service models
DaaS products differ in whether a user keeps the same desktop, shares a session host, or receives a fresh environment. They also vary in operating systems, application management, and how much work the customer must do.

- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz

| Pattern or example | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Persistent personal desktop | A user returns to a personal desktop and retains settings, files, and installed applications as the service allows. Amazon WorkSpaces Personal is one example. | Confirm what persists, who manages the image and applications, and how storage is handled. |
| Nonpersistent pooled desktop | Users draw from a pool and may receive a fresh desktop for each session; selected settings or files can be stored separately. | Check how user data and settings survive sign-out, and whether the service supports new deployments in your region. |
| Azure Virtual Desktop | Microsoft’s architecture includes session hosts, identity, storage, networking, and monitoring; it supports a multisession model. | Plan the architecture and evaluate licensing, network traffic, identity, and operational responsibilities. |
| Windows 365 | Microsoft presents single-user Cloud PCs as an alternative to Azure Virtual Desktop’s multisession model. | Determine whether individual Cloud PCs or shared multisession capacity better matches user patterns. |
| Citrix DaaS | Citrix describes app and desktop virtualization across public clouds, including Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud, as well as on-premises hypervisors. | Assess the deployment environment, management boundary, workload, and existing infrastructure. |
One product notice is especially time-sensitive: AWS’s pricing page says Amazon WorkSpaces Pools stopped accepting new customers on July 31, 2026, while existing customers can continue until December 31, 2027. It directs new customers seeking nonpersistent desktops to WorkSpaces Applications. Verify the current notice and availability before making a deployment decision. These examples are not interchangeable just because they are all associated with desktop virtualization. Compare persistence, single-user versus multisession needs, supported operating systems, image and application management, performance, network and identity requirements, and fit with existing cloud services and licenses. Microsoft’s virtual desktop architecture guide describes Azure Virtual Desktop components and its relationship to Windows 365; Citrix’s Citrix DaaS overview describes its supported deployment environments.

How to evaluate DaaS costs
There is no universal per-user price that meaningfully represents every DaaS deployment. Cost depends on provider and region, desktop size, storage, hours of use, concurrency, networking, persistence, and license eligibility. AWS publishes fixed monthly and hourly usage models for WorkSpaces Personal; Azure Virtual Desktop costs can also include network traffic and per-user access pricing for certain external-user scenarios. Build an estimate for the actual configuration and verify current regional pricing and licensing. See AWS WorkSpaces pricing and Microsoft’s guide to Azure Virtual Desktop costs.
For a useful estimate, model expected working hours and concurrency rather than multiplying a headline rate by total staff. Include storage, network egress, licensing, and any management work that remains with your team. Compare the same workload and user behavior across candidate services.

What to check before choosing a DaaS service
- Choose the desktop pattern. Decide whether users need persistent personal desktops or pooled, potentially nonpersistent sessions. Establish what data and settings must survive each session.
- Match architecture to concurrency. Determine whether users need single-user desktops or can share multisession hosts, and estimate how many will be active at once.
- Map responsibilities. Get explicit answers about infrastructure, operating system, desktop images, applications, updates, backup, and security. Identify which tasks remain with your organization.
- Test the workload. Specify CPU, memory, graphics, storage, peripherals, and acceptable network latency. Validate performance with the applications and access locations users will actually use.
- Review security and data requirements. Check identity and access controls, endpoint configuration, network paths, data location, compliance needs, patching, and backup responsibilities. Keeping data in a hosted desktop does not, by itself, secure it.
- Verify cost and eligibility. Confirm regional availability, licensing eligibility, pricing assumptions, and total cost under realistic usage. For Azure Virtual Desktop, Microsoft says external commercial users require per-user access pricing for a compliant deployment and that egress traffic may add cost.
DaaS versus ordinary remote access
DaaS provides a hosted virtual desktop or applications as a service; ordinary remote-access software generally lets someone connect to an existing computer. The distinction matters when planning who supplies and manages the desktop environment, where applications run, and where data is stored. Confirm the actual architecture of a proposed service rather than relying on its label.
