The available evidence supports comparing three beginner learning whoops and one camera-oriented FPV drone—not naming five proven racing quad winners. These options are not interchangeable, and none was tested head-to-head for speed or race performance here.
FPV means first-person view: a live camera feed shown in goggles or on a display. For a first purchase, weigh the learning modes, simulator support, included gear, compatibility and repair options—not just speed claims.

Which beginner FPV drone fits racing-style flying?
The Cetus kits are learning whoops: small beginner-oriented quads intended to help pilots build control skills. DJI Avata 2 is a different kind of option, aimed more at immersive flight and video. The available sources do not establish a fifth researched drone or a defensible top-five racing ranking, so this guide compares the four options that can be described accurately.

Those are that reviewer’s observations, not a comparative test. TechRadar’s Cetus X review |
| DJI Avata 2 | Guided FPV flight and footage, rather than a dedicated racing build | DJI lists beginner mode and Easy ACRO; manual mode is available with supported controller hardware. | It requires compatible DJI goggles and a controller. The available source frames it around immersive flight and video, not as a purpose-built racing quad. Check DJI’s compatibility details before buying. DJI Avata 2 FAQ |
These are distinct use cases, not four equivalent race-ready drones. In particular, do not treat a guided, camera-oriented FPV drone as a substitute for a small learning whoop when your goal is to develop racing-style manual control.

What do the Cetus kit specifications mean in practice?
Cetus: an all-in-one brushed starter
BETAFPV lists the Cetus at 35 g takeoff weight and 4–5 minutes of flight time. Those are manufacturer specifications on an undated product page accessed October 7, 2026—not independent test results. Its stated 80 m flight distance is conditional on a wide, undisturbed environment, not a promise of reliable range in every setting. The listed package includes goggles, transmitter, batteries, charger, spare propellers and tools; confirm what is currently in the box before ordering.
Cetus Pro: brushless hardware and simulator practice
BETAFPV lists the Cetus Pro at 33.19 g without a battery and gives the same 4–5 minute flight-time figure and 80 m wide, undisturbed-environment distance. The manufacturer also lists N/S/M flight modes, turtle mode, and transmitter support for computer simulator use. A simulator lets a new pilot practice control inputs without risking the aircraft; BETAFPV names Liftoff among the supported software. Confirm simulator setup and compatibility for your computer and transmitter.

Cetus X: read the review as one reviewer’s experience
TechRadar’s beginner-focused review offers an independent perspective on the Cetus X, including its reported frame crack, video breakup, short battery life and the practice needed for Acro. These findings are useful caveats, but one review does not establish how every unit will perform or how the model compares in a race.
Avata 2: guided FPV with equipment dependencies
DJI’s FAQ describes beginner mode, Easy ACRO and manual mode with supported controller equipment. That makes the Avata 2 relevant to someone who values guided flight and footage, but it adds a compatibility check: verify the specific goggles and controller combination DJI supports. Its documented positioning is camera-oriented, not competitive racing.

How should a beginner choose a first FPV setup?
- Choose the kind of flying you want. For learning control and progressing toward manual flying, focus on a learning whoop such as the Cetus or Cetus Pro. For guided immersive flight and footage, consider the Avata 2 while accounting for its compatible-equipment requirements.
- Check the modes and progression path. The Cetus and Cetus Pro list N/S/M modes; the Pro also lists turtle mode. DJI lists beginner mode and Easy ACRO, with manual mode dependent on supported controller hardware. Make sure the mode you want is available with the exact kit you plan to use.
- Account for simulator use. If you want to practice before flying, the Cetus Pro transmitter is described by BETAFPV as usable with computer FPV simulators. Verify the specific software, connection method and computer requirements.
- Compare the entire kit and its compatibility. Check whether goggles, radio, batteries, charger, tools and spare propellers are included. For modular equipment, verify exact model compatibility rather than assuming parts or controllers will work across brands or product lines.
- Plan for repairs and short flights. Look for compatible replacement batteries, propellers and other parts before purchase. Manufacturer-listed flight time for the Cetus and Cetus Pro is 4–5 minutes; plan practice around multiple charged batteries rather than expecting a long session from one pack.
- Check stock and current package details. Product inventory and box contents can change. BETAFPV’s Cetus and Cetus Pro pages showed sold-out status when accessed, so check the seller’s current listing rather than assuming availability.
What should you expect from flight time, range and beginner modes?
The Cetus and Cetus Pro figures are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements: both list 4–5 minutes of flight time, while the Cetus Pro weight is specified without its battery. BETAFPV qualifies the 80 m distance for both models as applying in a wide, undisturbed environment. Actual use can differ with conditions and setup; do not interpret these figures as guaranteed performance in a crowded or interference-prone location.
Assisted modes can make early practice more approachable, but they are not the same as Acro control. If racing-style flying is your aim, look for a realistic path to practicing manual inputs—ideally in a simulator and then in an appropriate, legal flying area. The supplied product information does not establish comparative speed, race times or durability across these models.

What U.S. rules apply to recreational FPV drone flights?
In the United States, the FAA’s recreational guidance covers flying for recreational purposes, following community-based safety guidelines, keeping the aircraft within visual line of sight, yielding to manned aircraft, obtaining controlled-airspace authorization where required and registering when applicable. Read the FAA’s current guidance for the details that apply to your aircraft and flight: FAA recreational flyers.

For operations under Part 107, the FAA says an FPV pilot must have a visual observer who keeps the drone within unaided sight. The agency’s Part 107 summary also says to avoid manned aircraft and not to fly over people unless they participate in the operation. See the FAA Part 107 summary; Part 107 is a separate operating path that requires a Remote Pilot Certificate. Rules differ outside the United States, so check the relevant aviation authority before flying.
