That can reduce manual timesheet entry and give managers attendance and activity summaries, but it also means collecting information about employees’ work activity. Whether DeskTime fits depends on the reports a team needs, the plan it can justify, and whether the organization is comfortable with its monitoring settings and communicates them clearly.
This is a documentation-based review of DeskTime’s published features, prices, privacy disclosures, and platform requirements—not a hands-on product test. Vendor claims about productivity are not independent evidence that the service improves results.

What DeskTime does
DeskTime’s main workflow is automatic desktop time tracking. The company says its desktop app runs in the background and records active applications and the active browser tab or website. It also offers manual and offline time entry, project tracking, attendance and idle-time information, productivity categorization, reports, dashboards, scheduling, absence management, and integrations. Its published integration examples include Google Calendar, Outlook, Jira, Asana, Trello, and GitLab, alongside API and Zapier options. See the features and integrations page and tracking explainer.

That combination may suit teams that want activity-based time records and managers who need summaries of time and attendance. Freelancers and individuals may also use it to track their own work. The feature set does not establish that using DeskTime will raise productivity: the available product materials describe what the software does, not independently measured outcomes.

What DeskTime tracks—and what it does not
DeskTime says it tracks active apps and websites. Organizations can configure productivity categories company-wide or by team. Its tracking explainer says screenshots are optional, can be blurred, and that Private Time pauses tracking, including app and URL tracking and screenshots. The company also says it does not track GPS location, analyze app or website content, record screen video, record webcam video, or record device audio.
The privacy policy adds important detail: depending on configuration and enabled features, processed data can include application names, websites visited, tasks, work timing, breaks, and screenshots. It also says DeskTime may record counts of keystrokes or mouse movements, but not typed text or click locations. These distinctions matter: not recording what someone types is different from not collecting keystroke-activity counts.

Where DeskTime may be useful
- Automatic desktop capture can reduce reliance on manual timesheet entry, while manual and offline options cover time that is not recorded through desktop activity.
- Reports, project tracking, attendance information, scheduling, absence management, and integrations provide several ways to organize work-time records.
- Private Time gives users a way to pause tracking, and screenshots can be blurred when the feature is enabled.
- The listed desktop support spans Windows, macOS, and several Ubuntu LTS releases.
Trade-offs to weigh
- Activity records and screenshots are sensitive workplace data. Employers should tell employees what is enabled, what information is collected, who can access it, and how it will be used.
- Screenshots are listed with Premium and Enterprise, rather than Pro, so their availability affects the plan comparison.
- The displayed per-user prices are annual-billing rates before VAT. The exact monthly rates are not clear from the pricing details reviewed here.
- Productivity categories depend on app and website classifications, which DeskTime says can be customized. A category or percentage is not a universal measure of work quality or value.
How much weight should you give DeskTime’s productivity claims?
DeskTime’s homepage, accessed in 2026, lists 730K+ users, 330M+ hours tracked, and a 30% productivity boost. These are company-published figures; the reviewed materials do not establish a methodology or independent causal evidence for the 30% claim. Treat it as marketing, not as a forecast of what a particular team will achieve.
Best Value

The homepage also features a testimonial attributed to accounting consultant Brian Tankersley: “I’ve been fighting a war with timesheets for over 30 years. You have to let automation work for you. If you’re not doing that, you’re becoming more obsolete every day.” It illustrates one person’s view of automation, not independent product testing. See the DeskTime homepage.
Who should consider DeskTime?
DeskTime is worth evaluating when a team specifically wants automatic desktop activity-based time records, reports, or attendance summaries and is prepared to set clear monitoring rules. It is less suitable for organizations that do not want to collect app, website, or other activity data, or that need a feature the selected plan does not include. Before committing, compare the plan’s actual features with the team’s requirements, review the current privacy policy and settings, and explain the monitoring approach to employees.
