Call of Duty’s official guide lists it as a Core multiplayer map in Modern Warfare III, and its central tactical question is simple: when you leave cover, are you exposed to long-range fire from the woods, or are you moving through wreckage where fights happen at close range? Choosing routes and positions well comes down to recognizing which of those two situations you are in.
The advice below is drawn from Call of Duty’s own Derail map guide and training page. Where it is a publisher recommendation rather than an observed result, this article says so. It is not based on independent playtesting.

What the map looks like
According to the official training guide, Derail is a snowy forest surrounding a railway town, with a trainwreck and scattered railcars at the center of the map. The training page lists it among the game’s Core multiplayer maps. (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III Multiplayer: How to Play)

For team-based modes, the official Derail guide places the main spawns at Train Platforms in the north and Street in the south. It divides the map into seven callout areas, which are worth learning before you play:

- Train Platforms / Power Station (north)
- Street and nearby landmarks (south)
- Warehouse
- Office
- North Woods
- Train Crash
- South Woods / Creek
The guide describes the map through these areas rather than giving a coordinate-level breakdown, so the callouts are the most reliable shared vocabulary you will get from the publisher. (Call of Duty Multiplayer Map Guide: Derail)
The core trade-off: open woods versus close wreckage
Most of Derail’s tactical decisions come from one split. The guide’s own wording on the woods is direct: “The wide-open woodlands on either side of the map present ample sniping opportunities.” That quotation is publisher-authored guide copy, not a named-person statement, so attribute it to the Call of Duty Derail map guide if you cite it.
The woods are exposed long-range territory
The guide characterizes both North Woods and South Woods as attractive positions for snipers and other long-range loadouts. South Woods has sightlines toward the railway town, but rough terrain and reduced tree cover affect how easily you can move through it. If you are carrying a long-range weapon, these are the areas the guide points to. If you are not, a sprint across open woodland is the kind of exposure the guide warns about.

The trainwreck shortens the engagement distance
Many railcars are accessible, and the wreck, the bridge, and the Creek together create cover and ambush points. The guide says the lower crash area offers some protection from woodland snipers, which makes close-quarters fighting more common there. Moving through the wreckage is therefore a deliberate way to shift a fight from long range to short range, and it usually means accepting less visibility of what is ahead.
The bridge and Creek are routes as much as positions
The bridge overlooks the tracks, which makes it a useful place to see movement below, but it is also a place where you are visible. The lower Creek route is the guide’s suggested way to move toward the Warehouse with less exposure to woodland sightlines. Learning which forest routes are safer over several matches, as the guide recommends, is mostly a matter of noticing which lanes keep you under the tree line and out of the open.
The northern interiors favor closer fights
The Warehouse and Office are the two areas the guide specifically calls out as places where close-quarters combat matters, even on a map that feels large. Players who prefer short-range engagements will find more of their fights here than in the woods.

Choosing between a direct push and a safer approach
The official guide frames route selection as a choice between a direct push and a longer or less exposed approach. The direct route is faster but puts you in view of the woods. The longer route, often through the Creek or the wreckage, costs time but reduces the number of sightlines you cross. Which is right depends on what the enemy team is doing. A simple check before committing: if you can see that an opposing sniper is likely to cover the open ground, take the lower or covered route.

Domination
The official guide says the flags emphasize the east side of the map and calls the fight for B paramount. When approaching B, use cover near the railcars. The guide also identifies three vantage points: the Water Tower and the far-west cabin, both of which offer long-range views over B; rooftop ladder access near A; and the Office as a vantage point for C. Those are the specific positions the publisher names, so they are the best starting point for learning the objective.
Cutthroat
The guide describes the open forest as the place to spread out, and the interiors and wreckage as the places for closer combat. It advises keeping the overtime flag in view and deciding whether to stay together or spread out based on how the opposing team is approaching. The guide does not prescribe one formation for every match.

Search and Destroy
The official page introduces Search and Destroy as a high-risk crossing through the woods. The guide available for this article does not establish detailed site-by-site tactics for this mode. Treat any specific route you hear about as something to verify by playing the map yourself or by checking further official material.
Equipment suggestions from the official guide
The official guide offers two equipment suggestions. The first is hybrid optics, which let you switch between long- and short-range fights without changing your setup mid-match. The second is a launcher, which the guide recommends for countering enemy aerial streaks. These are the publisher’s suggestions for Derail’s layout, not proven best choices, and they should be tested against your own playstyle.
What this guide does not establish
The sources behind this article describe Derail’s layout, callout areas, and tactical trade-offs. They do not establish current matchmaking rotation, playlist availability, or the status of recent game updates, so do not assume Derail appears in a particular playlist without checking the current official Call of Duty channels. Map details can also change with updates, and the official guide does not give a date for the advice it contains.
