Deno Deploy vs Cloudflare Workers: runtime, pricing, and deployment differences

Choose Deno Deploy when your application relies on the standard Deno runtime, filesystem access, subprocesses, FFI, or Node native addons. Choose Cloudflare Workers when the code is built around web-standard APIs, Cloudflare bindings, and Wrangler’s edge deployment model. Cloudflare publishes a clear request-and-CPU rate card; Deno’s comparable figures are plan-specific, so a fair price comparison requires measuring your workload against both vendors’ current calculators. Also check product status carefully: Deno Deploy Classic and the subhosting v1 API were scheduled for shutdown on July 20, 2026.

The practical difference in one view

These services both run serverless JavaScript near users, but they make different assumptions about what your program is. Deno Deploy is built around the Deno runtime itself. Cloudflare Workers is built around portable web-platform interfaces and Cloudflare’s network services.

Decision factor Deno Deploy Cloudflare Workers
Primary programming model Standard Deno runtime, including Deno permissions and CLI features Web-standard JavaScript runtime with a configurable subset of Node.js APIs
Current runtime detail The referenced Deno documentation identifies Deno 2.5.0; check the live runtime reference for updates Behavior is governed by compatibility dates and compatibility flags
Dependencies JSR and npm dependencies, filesystem, network requests, subprocesses, FFI, and Node native addons are documented as supported Web APIs are the safest target; Node support is partial and Wrangler may provide polyfills
Published paid entry price Not stated on the cited limits page; use Deno’s current pricing page $5 monthly minimum on the published paid plan
Largest documented resource ceilings 1 GB maximum deployment and 512 MB maximum memory allocation on the referenced limits page 128 MB memory and 64 MiB Worker size
Deployment path GitHub integration, dashboard, or the deno deploy command Wrangler CLI, plus Cloudflare bindings and adjacent services

Neither platform is categorically faster. Cloudflare notes that local Wrangler measurements can differ from CPU behavior in production, so benchmark a representative deployed workload rather than relying on a laptop run.

How the runtimes actually work

Deno Deploy runs the standard Deno runtime

Deno’s documentation says the runtime used in Deploy is the standard Deno runtime with the features of the Deno CLI. That includes JSR and npm package support, reading and writing files, outbound network requests, subprocesses, FFI, and Node native addons. Applications execute in a secure, isolated Linux environment and are serverless: execution begins when a request arrives.

This is important for applications that already use Deno permissions, native integrations, command-line tools, or filesystem-oriented code. You can keep more of the assumptions made during local development because Deploy is not a separate, reduced JavaScript dialect. You still need to test permissions, environment variables, startup work, and production data access, but the underlying API surface is familiar to Deno users.

Workers is web-platform-first

Cloudflare describes the Workers runtime as designed to be JavaScript standards compliant and web-interoperable. Its core interfaces include Request, Response, fetch, Streams, Web Crypto, WebSockets, WebAssembly, and environment bindings. A handler written against those interfaces is generally easier to move between web-oriented edge runtimes than code tied to a particular operating system.

Node.js compatibility is deliberately narrower. Some Node APIs are implemented directly; others are supplied as Wrangler polyfills. A polyfill can cover a common method while still throwing when your code calls an unimplemented method. Compatibility dates and flags are part of the runtime contract, so changing a date or flag can change behavior even when the JavaScript source is unchanged.

What this means for Node and npm applications

Deno Deploy is the more natural destination for a Deno project or an npm application that expects broad runtime capabilities. The Deno reference explicitly includes npm packages and Node native addons, although each package must still receive the permissions and system access it expects.

Workers can run many npm packages when they use web APIs or the subset of Node behavior that Workers supports. Packages that require unrestricted fs, long-lived processes, native modules, arbitrary sockets, or an unimplemented Node method need adaptation or replacement. Before migrating, inspect transitive dependencies rather than checking only your application’s direct imports.

Pricing: compare meters, not headline plans

Cloudflare Workers’ published figures

Cloudflare’s 2026 pricing information lists a free allowance of 100,000 requests per day. The published paid plan has a $5 monthly minimum, includes 10 million requests each month and 30 million CPU milliseconds, then charges $0.30 per additional million requests and $0.02 per additional million CPU milliseconds.

Workers item Published value Qualification
Free plan requests 100,000 per day Cloudflare’s 2026 free-plan figure
Paid-plan minimum $5 per month Minimum monthly charge on the published paid plan
Included paid requests 10 million per month Standard paid usage allowance
Included CPU time 30 million CPU milliseconds per month Standard paid usage allowance
Request overage $0.30 per additional million requests Applies after the included request allowance
CPU overage $0.02 per additional million CPU milliseconds Applies after the included CPU allowance

Cloudflare bills inbound requests. Subrequests made by a Worker are not billed as separate inbound requests. In the Standard model, duration has no separate charge or limit; CPU time is the metered resource. A simple estimate is:

What is and is not established for Deno Deploy pricing

The referenced Deno pricing-and-limitations page states a 1 GB maximum deployment size and a 512 MB maximum memory allocation, but it does not provide a complete apples-to-apples request and CPU rate card. Limits can vary by plan, and the page directs readers to Deno’s live pricing view for current amounts.

That means it is not accurate to declare Deno Deploy universally cheaper or more expensive from the figures above. Record your expected monthly requests, average and peak CPU time, memory needs, deployment size, scheduled jobs, storage, and egress. Then enter the same workload into Deno’s current pricing information and Cloudflare’s calculator. A service with a higher fixed minimum can still cost less for a CPU-heavy workload, while a low-traffic application may care most about the free allowance.

Resource limits that affect architecture

Limit Deno Deploy Cloudflare Workers
Deployment or Worker size 1 GB maximum deployment on the cited 2025 limits page 64 MiB Worker size
Memory 512 MB maximum memory allocation on the cited 2025 limits page 128 MB
Startup Not stated in the cited Deno limits material 1-second startup listed in Cloudflare’s limits table
Subrequests Not stated in the cited comparison material 50 per free request; 10,000 per paid request
CPU duration Plan-specific limits; consult current Deno documentation 30 seconds by default on paid usage, configurable up to 5 minutes for an HTTP invocation

These numbers change design choices. A 64 MiB Worker bundle encourages aggressive dependency trimming and externalizes large assets. The 128 MB memory ceiling makes in-memory processing of large files or datasets risky. Conversely, Deno’s documented 1 GB deployment ceiling gives more room for bundled dependencies, but the 512 MB memory allocation remains a separate runtime constraint.

Workers’ subrequest allowance is especially relevant to API aggregators. A free request can make up to 50 subrequests, while a paid request can make up to 10,000 under the cited limits. Those are request-level ceilings, not a guarantee that a chain of slow upstream calls will finish within your CPU or client timeout budget.

Deployment workflows

Deploying a Deno application

  1. Make the project reproducible locally. Keep the entry point, imports, permissions, environment variables, and lockfile in version control. Test the same Deno version family that your Deploy project uses; the referenced runtime currently identifies Deno 2.5.0.
  2. Choose an integration. Deno offers deployment from a connected GitHub repository, from the web dashboard, or from the deno deploy command.
  3. Set production configuration. Add secrets and environment variables through the project’s deployment settings rather than committing them. Confirm that filesystem paths and network destinations are permitted in production.
  4. Deploy and observe. Run deno deploy when using the CLI workflow, or trigger the connected repository/dashboard deployment. Deno presents managed builds, TLS, global distribution, scaling, integrated observability, cron, and a built-in key-value database as part of the platform.
  5. Exercise real routes. Test cold requests, error paths, scheduled jobs, database access, and any subprocess or native-addon call. A successful upload does not prove that every permission or operating-system dependency is available at runtime.

Deno positions Deploy as a managed platform for Deno and Node applications and frameworks such as Next.js, Astro, and SvelteKit. The practical benefit is a Deno-first workflow in which builds and hosting are handled together rather than assembled from a separate runtime and edge configuration.

Deploying a Worker with Wrangler

  1. Classify the handler. Identify which code is pure web-platform JavaScript and which code depends on Node modules, filesystem behavior, or native libraries.
  2. Create the Worker project and configuration. Install the current Wrangler CLI, define the entry point, and declare bindings for the Cloudflare services your code uses. Keep the compatibility date and any Node-compatibility flags explicit so upgrades are reviewable.
  3. Run local checks. Use Wrangler’s local development mode to exercise requests, bindings, streams, WebSockets, and error handling. Treat local CPU timings as directional only; Cloudflare warns they can differ from deployed CPU behavior.
  4. Publish with Wrangler. The standard CLI workflow uses npx wrangler deploy (verify the syntax for your installed Wrangler version). Review the deployment output and confirm that the intended environment and bindings were selected.
  5. Validate the edge behavior. Send requests through the deployed URL, inspect logs and metrics, and test every Node API that was polyfilled. Replace unsupported methods instead of assuming a polyfill will fail gracefully.

Workers deployment decisions include more than the function itself. Cloudflare’s global network, bindings, storage products, and adjacent compute services can simplify an architecture that already uses Cloudflare, but they also create platform-specific configuration to carry during a migration.

Which platform fits common workloads?

Pick Deno Deploy when runtime capability is the constraint

  • Your code uses Deno APIs, permission checks, subprocesses, FFI, filesystem reads or writes, or Node native addons.
  • You want npm and JSR dependencies to run inside the standard Deno environment rather than adapting them to a web-only runtime.
  • Your deployment artifact or dependency tree is likely to approach Workers’ 64 MiB size ceiling.
  • You prefer Deno-managed builds, TLS, scaling, observability, cron, and key-value storage in one workflow.

Pick Workers when web interoperability and Cloudflare integration are the priority

  • The handler can be expressed with Request/Response, Fetch, Streams, Web Crypto, WebSockets, WebAssembly, and bindings.
  • You need Cloudflare-native services and want Wrangler to manage deployment and environment configuration.
  • Your traffic pattern benefits from Cloudflare’s published request and CPU meters and the paid plan’s included allowances.
  • You are willing to audit npm dependencies and replace Node APIs that are missing or only partially polyfilled.

When neither headline price answers the question

For a small, sporadic API, compare the free allowance and the $5 Cloudflare minimum with Deno’s current plan terms. For a high-volume endpoint, model both request count and CPU milliseconds instead of using requests alone. For a memory-heavy or dependency-heavy service, eliminate options that cannot meet the memory or artifact ceiling before comparing dollars.

Migration checklist

Moving from Deno Deploy to Workers

  1. List every Deno permission, filesystem operation, subprocess, FFI call, native addon, and npm package.
  2. Separate portable web-handler code from runtime-specific modules.
  3. Replace operating-system and filesystem assumptions with bindings or external services supported by Workers.
  4. Set a deliberate compatibility date and test Node polyfills, including failure paths for methods that are not implemented.
  5. Reduce the bundle below the 64 MiB Worker size limit and check memory use against 128 MB.
  6. Recalculate cost with inbound requests and CPU milliseconds; do not count subrequests as additional inbound requests.

Moving from Workers to Deno Deploy

  1. Inventory bindings and Cloudflare-specific APIs; decide which need Deno services or another provider.
  2. Convert the Worker entry point and environment configuration to the Deno project structure.
  3. Review npm packages for Deno import compatibility and required permissions.
  4. Move scheduled work, key-value data, secrets, and observability to the corresponding Deno Deploy features or deliberately chosen replacements.
  5. Test memory, startup, subprocess, filesystem, and native-addon behavior in the isolated Linux environment.
  6. Confirm that the target is the current Deploy product, not documentation for Deploy Classic.

Product-status warning for 2026 comparisons

Deno’s overview identifies Deno Deploy Classic and the subhosting v1 API as scheduled to shut down on July 20, 2026. Because that date is now past, do not start a migration from an old Classic guide or assume that a Classic endpoint remains available. Verify the current Deploy product, API, limits, and migration instructions in Deno’s live documentation before changing production infrastructure.

Older articles may also describe a six-region model or limits that belonged to Classic. Those figures should not be used as current characteristics of the reworked Deploy product.

Troubleshooting decisions

A package works locally but fails on Workers

Check the compatibility date and flags first, then identify the exact Node method that failed. If Wrangler supplied a polyfill, read its supported surface and test the failing method directly. Replace the dependency or isolate that feature behind a web-compatible implementation when the method is not implemented.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Worker exceeds size, memory, or subrequest limits

Remove unused dependencies, split optional features, stream large responses, and move data processing out of memory where possible. Count every upstream call in an aggregator and compare it with the free or paid subrequest ceiling. If the design still requires a larger artifact or memory allocation, reassess whether Workers is the appropriate runtime.

The bill is higher than expected

Separate inbound request volume from CPU milliseconds, then check whether included allowances were exceeded. Remember that Cloudflare’s $5 minimum applies before overages, while subrequests are not separate inbound-request charges. For Deno, use the current plan-specific pricing rather than importing numbers from an older limits page.

Performance differs between local and production tests

Measure a deployed endpoint under representative traffic. Cloudflare explicitly warns that local Wrangler CPU measurements can differ from deployed behavior, and no supplied evidence establishes a categorical speed advantage for either platform.

Bottom line

Deno Deploy is the closer match for applications that need Deno’s complete runtime surface and broader system capabilities. Cloudflare Workers is the closer match for compact, web-standard handlers that benefit from Cloudflare bindings and Wrangler. Decide first whether your dependencies and APIs fit the runtime; only then compare the measured request, CPU, memory, artifact, and ecosystem costs.
