The Dell PowerStore 9500 is an all-flash, all-NVMe enterprise array designed to consolidate block, file and container storage. In a Dell-commissioned Principled Technologies comparison completed in April 2026, it averaged 834,558.4 IOPS and 0.441 ms latency in the reported tests; those results describe specific configurations and workloads, not a guarantee for every data center. Its potential value is the combination of high-speed NVMe storage, multiple host protocols, data services and scale-out options. Whether it improves your environment depends on your workload, capacity assumptions, network design and protection requirements.
What the PowerStore 9500 is
Dell lists the PowerStore 9500 as a unified storage appliance supporting block, file and container workloads. The base enclosure is 3U and contains two active/active nodes, 40 E3 EDSFF NVMe drive slots, ten I/O modules and four redundant power supplies. Dell’s listed system configuration includes four Intel Xeon CPUs, 128 cores at 2.2 GHz, and 2,048 GB of DRAM. See Dell’s PowerStore 9500 specifications for the current product listing.

Protocols and connectivity
For block storage, Dell lists Fibre Channel (FC), NVMe over Fibre Channel (NVMe/FC), iSCSI and NVMe over TCP (NVMe/TCP). File protocols include NFSv3, NFSv4, NFSv4.1 and NFSv4.2; SMB/CIFS through SMB 3.1.1; FTP; and SFTP. Dell’s listed maximums are up to 32 32/64Gb FC ports, up to 40 10GbE or 25GbE ports, and up to 16 100GbE/iSCSI ports. These are listed ceilings, not a specification for every order: confirm the actual port count, speeds and module configuration in the proposed bill of materials.
Expansion and scale-out
Dell lists scale-up drive expansion and clustering of up to four appliances, with load-balancing intelligence and data movement between appliances. Its maximum effective-capacity listing is 5.81 PBe per appliance and 23.24 PBe per cluster. These are effective, not raw-flash, figures; the achievable amount depends on configuration and data-reduction assumptions. Treat them as planning figures to validate against your data and protection policy rather than as guaranteed physical capacity.

What the performance comparison measured
Principled Technologies published a hands-on comparison commissioned by Dell. The report says testing concluded on April 17, 2026, with test configurations finalized on or before April 15, 2026. In its comparison with an array identified as Vendor A, the PowerStore 9500 averaged 834,558.4 IOPS and 0.441 ms latency; Vendor A averaged 357,427.3 IOPS and 1.223 ms latency. The report tested defined Vdbench workloads and two specific configurations, so these values are not predictions for an arbitrary production workload. Read the Principled Technologies report for its setup and results.
Latency at matched target IOPS
For the latency comparison, Dell’s summary describes results at matched target IOPS, and the report infographic specifies a target of 310,000 IOPS. In that defined comparison, average latency was 0.441 ms for the PowerStore 9500 and 1.223 ms for Vendor A. The matched target makes the latency figures more useful than comparing averages from different offered loads, but the averages do not show tail latency or establish how the arrays behave with your host configuration, workload concurrency or data.

Why your result may differ
IOPS and latency depend on factors including block size, read/write mix, queue depth, concurrency, host and network configuration, and the data being accessed. A proof of concept should reproduce the workload that matters to your business and measure sustained throughput and tail latency as well as averages. A vendor benchmark can show what a particular system did under stated conditions; it cannot establish that every customer will see the same result.

In the same comparison, Principled Technologies measured a 6.6:1 data-reduction ratio on the PowerStore 9500 test dataset and 2.76:1 on Vendor A. Those are benchmark results for that dataset, not universal ratios for customer data. Dell separately states a 6:1 average data-reduction guarantee for reducible data on PowerStore Gen 3 appliances, subject to its terms; application-level results vary. The guarantee and its eligibility conditions are described in Dell’s PowerStore Gen 3 announcement and claim footnotes. Keep the guarantee distinct from the 6.6:1 measured result when estimating usable capacity.

How to evaluate the 9500 for your data center
Compare the 9500 with alternatives using the same workload, usable-capacity assumptions and protection policy. A useful evaluation should cover more than peak IOPS:
Best Value
- 【Compatible With 130w Dell laptop charger usb c】Input: ac 100v-240v 1.8a, 50-60hz; output: 20v 6.5a; connector size:usb-c/type c port; watt:130 watt; color: black(please confirm the specifications of your power adapter before ordering)
- Define the workload. Document block sizes, read/write ratio, concurrency and sustained throughput for the applications that matter.
- Compare latency fairly. Request latency at matched target IOPS and capture tail latency, not only averages.
- Test data reduction on representative data. Record the measured ratio separately from any guarantee, including the guarantee’s eligibility terms.
- Normalize capacity and rack requirements. Compare usable or effective capacity assumptions, drive count, rack units and the expansion path.
- Validate the host and network design. Check protocols, FC or Ethernet speeds, multipathing, interoperability and network costs against the actual configuration.
- Check protection and operations. Match snapshots, replication mode and distance, recovery objectives, security controls, support and upgrade processes to requirements.
Ask Dell or the solution provider for a customer-specific bill of materials, capacity model, power estimate and proof-of-concept plan. The product listing does not provide a public transaction price; a quote depends on configuration and commercial terms.
Who should consider the PowerStore 9500?
The 9500 merits evaluation where an organization needs enterprise all-NVMe storage, unified block and file services, substantial connectivity options, and a path to add drives or cluster appliances. The benchmark provides evidence of strong results in one Dell-commissioned test, while Dell’s listed features show a broad set of data services. Neither determines fit on its own: workload-specific testing, validated capacity assumptions and a configuration-level quote are necessary to judge the system against a particular data center’s needs.
