A production Dell AI platform is a coordinated system, not a server purchase. Specify the GPU worker nodes, accelerator topology, separate high-speed fabrics, shared storage, software versions, data-center capacity, and support lifecycle as one design. Dell’s documented AI Factory with NVIDIA combines PowerEdge servers, NVIDIA GPUs, Spectrum-X networking, PowerScale storage, NVIDIA AI Enterprise, automation, and services; use that validated stack as a starting point, then size every item against your training, fine-tuning, or inference workload.
What a complete Dell AI infrastructure checklist includes
Before requesting a quote, write down requirements in seven connected areas. Omitting one usually moves the bottleneck somewhere else: under-sized storage can leave expensive GPUs idle, an oversubscribed network can stretch training time, and an unsupported driver combination can turn a working proof of concept into an operational incident.

- Compute: PowerEdge GPU servers, host CPUs, memory, local boot or scratch storage, PCIe and GPU interconnect topology.
- Accelerators: GPU model, memory per GPU, GPU count, precision support, cooling, and software compatibility.
- Networks: a high-bandwidth GPU fabric, a storage and access fabric, and isolated out-of-band management.
- Shared storage: capacity, parallel throughput, metadata performance, checkpoint behavior, data protection, and expansion.
- Software and operations: operating system, Kubernetes distribution, GPU and network operators, drivers, CUDA, containers, identity, secrets, monitoring, and change control.
- Facilities: rack space, power, cooling, floor loading, cabling, fire protection, and remote-hands capability.
- Support and lifecycle: service response, spares, firmware entitlement, escalation, security updates, and end-of-service runway.
Document the owner, acceptance test, and failure procedure for each item. A bill of materials without those operating details is not an AI infrastructure plan.
Choose PowerEdge servers and GPUs by workload
Training and fine-tuning
Distributed training and large fine-tuning jobs reward dense GPU capacity and fast GPU-to-GPU communication. Confirm the number of GPUs per server, whether they use the required NVLink or other accelerator interconnect, host PCIe lane placement, CPU-to-GPU affinity, system memory, and network-adapter placement. A configuration that has the right GPU count but crosses slow PCIe paths can perform very differently from the same count on a balanced topology.

Dell identifies the PowerEdge XE9680 as a GPU worker node and lists XE7740 and XE7745 systems in the same AI Factory architecture. Treat the model name as the beginning of a configuration review: the exact GPU generation, SXM or PCIe form factor, memory size, host CPU, NICs, power supplies, firmware, and supported software matrix must appear on the quote.
Inference
Inference often has different economics from training. Throughput-oriented batch inference may favor many accelerators, while interactive serving may favor lower latency, enough memory for the model and key-value cache, and predictable network paths. Ask for the target requests per second, latency percentile, concurrency, model quantization, context length, and availability target. Those values determine whether a dense XE9680-class node, another PowerEdge configuration, or a smaller scale-out pool is appropriate.
GPU selection questions
- How much model, optimizer, activation, and checkpoint data must fit in GPU memory?
- Is the proposed accelerator an NVIDIA H200 SXM, a PCIe variant, or another generation, and are all nodes identical?
- What interconnect is available inside a server and between servers?
- Which CUDA, driver, framework, container, and operator versions are supported together?
- What is the sustained power draw and cooling method under the intended workload?
- Can the cluster be expanded with the same GPU and firmware combination, or will it become a separate pool?
Do not infer performance from GPU count alone. Memory capacity, memory bandwidth, interconnect topology, network fabric, software versions, and data-loader behavior all affect useful throughput.
A representative Dell AI Factory configuration
Dell’s Spectrum technical guide presents an example containing 16 PowerEdge XE9680 servers, seven PowerScale F710 nodes, and 128 NVIDIA H200 SXM GPUs. That is a reference configuration, not a universal bill of materials or a promise that every workload needs those quantities. It demonstrates the scale at which rack power, cooling, cabling, spares, and maintenance become design constraints.
| Element | Representative figure | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| GPU worker servers | 16 PowerEdge XE9680 | Use as a sizing example; recalculate for required training or inference capacity. |
| Shared-storage nodes | 7 PowerScale F710 | Validate usable capacity, throughput, protection level, and expansion for your data. |
| Accelerators | 128 NVIDIA H200 SXM | Check memory, interconnect, software support, power, and availability for the exact SKU. |
| Software named in the configuration | NVIDIA AI Enterprise 8.0 and Dell Automation Platform 2.0 | Confirm entitlement, release compatibility, and the versions approved for your chosen hardware. |
The guide’s publication was surfaced as a 2025/2024 Dell document. Confirm the current revision and regional availability before treating any component or software version as orderable.

Design three separate network planes
The cited Dell physical architecture separates 400 GbE GPU Ethernet, 200 GbE storage and access traffic, and 1 GbE out-of-band management. Keeping these planes distinct prevents management bursts, user traffic, or storage transfers from competing directly with collective GPU communication.
GPU fabric: 400 GbE
Use the GPU fabric for east-west traffic such as all-reduce, parameter exchange, and other distributed-training collectives. Check switch port count, cable and optic type, adapter speed, switch buffering, congestion-control or lossless requirements, telemetry, and redundant paths. Ask the integrator to show the oversubscription ratio at the rack and cluster level, not only the nominal port speed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStorage and access fabric: 200 GbE
This plane carries dataset reads, checkpoint writes, model-artifact access, and approved user or service traffic. Size it from measured throughput and concurrency. A cluster can have ample aggregate bandwidth yet suffer when many jobs issue small metadata operations or checkpoint simultaneously.
Management network: 1 GbE
Reserve the 1 GbE out-of-band network for baseboard management controllers, switch management, provisioning, monitoring, and recovery. Isolate it with the required security controls and ensure it remains reachable when the production fabrics are degraded.
Network acceptance checklist
- All NIC, switch, optic, cable, firmware, and operator versions are a validated combination.
- Port counts include uplinks, redundant links, expansion ports, and spare capacity.
- Every cable path and transceiver type is documented, including length limits and spare stock.
- Telemetry captures link errors, congestion, drops, latency, and utilization per port.
- Failure tests cover a link, NIC, switch, and power-domain loss without mixing management traffic into the test.
Is PowerScale suitable for GPU workloads?
PowerScale F710 is the named storage platform in the cited Dell AI Factory configurations and can serve as shared storage for datasets, checkpoints, logs, model artifacts, and staging. Suitability depends on workload behavior, not the product name. Validate the storage system with your actual data-loader, checkpoint, and metadata patterns before committing.

Capacity and namespace
Calculate usable capacity after protection overhead and reserve room for dataset versions, intermediate files, checkpoints, failed-job remnants, logs, and model artifacts. Decide whether teams share one namespace, use separate directories or quotas, or require isolated namespaces for security and chargeback.

Measure sustained read throughput for training, write throughput for checkpoints, and metadata operations for the expected file count. Many small files can stress metadata services even when the aggregate gigabytes per second look acceptable. Test concurrent jobs rather than a single sequential copy.
Protection, backup, and recovery
Specify the protection level, snapshot or replication policy, backup target, retention, and recovery-time objective. Checkpoint protection is distinct from dataset backup: a failed checkpoint can waste a training run, while an immutable dataset copy may be needed for reproducibility or compliance.
Feeding the GPUs
Confirm the number and speed of storage links, client-mount method, switch placement, and path redundancy. Benchmark end-to-end delivery from PowerScale through the storage fabric and host memory into the GPU pipeline. If the data-loader cannot keep accelerators busy, adding GPUs will not solve the problem.

Use Dell’s code-revision guidance
Dell publishes minimum, recommended, and latest code revisions for server, storage, and networking products. Treat that document as a recurring gate before purchase, firmware change, driver change, and security patch. Record the revision date used for approval, test updates in a staging node, and retain a rollback image and configuration backup.

A 16-server, 128-GPU example can require substantially more power, heat rejection, cable management, and service planning than a conventional virtualization rack. Obtain a vendor-validated rack elevation and power budget for the exact configuration, including switches, storage, optics, management equipment, and startup or peak draw.
Facilities checklist
- Utility capacity, distribution panels, breaker coordination, and dual power feeds.
- Rack power density, power-cord types, receptacles, and A/B redundancy.
- Cooling method, airflow direction, heat-rejection capacity, and any liquid-cooling requirement.
- Floor loading, rack dimensions, seismic or anchoring requirements, and delivery route.
- Overhead or under-floor cable paths with bend-radius and labeling standards.
- Fire detection and suppression compatible with the room and equipment.
- Spare parts storage, staging space, secure media handling, and remote-hands coverage.
- Noise, access, maintenance clearances, and a plan for replacing a failed node without disrupting running jobs.
Have facilities approve the final power and cooling figures before the purchase order. Nameplate power is not a substitute for a measured or vendor-supplied operating budget for the intended workload.
Make support and lifecycle terms explicit
Support varies by product, geography, and contract, so the order-specific quote is authoritative. Dell maintains end-of-life documentation for infrastructure and storage families; use it to check the remaining support runway for every server, GPU platform, switch, and storage node.
Questions for the quote
- What service level and response target apply to each component?
- Is on-site coverage available at the deployment location, and during which hours?
- Which parts are stocked locally, and what is the replacement lead time for GPUs, NICs, optics, disks, and power supplies?
- Are firmware updates, security advisories, and escalation assistance included?
- Who owns coordination when a failure crosses server, network, storage, and software boundaries?
- What are the end-of-sale, end-of-support, and final-security-update dates?
Define a spare strategy for the components whose failure can strand a large job. Track warranty status, contract renewal dates, recommended code revisions, security advisories, and replacement lead times in the same operational register as the cluster inventory.
Use a repeatable design and acceptance process
- Characterize workloads. Record model size, precision, dataset size, checkpoint interval, target throughput or latency, concurrency, job duration, and availability objective for training, fine-tuning, and inference.
- Build the hardware design. Select the PowerEdge model, GPU SKU and count, host CPU and memory, local storage, NICs, switches, PowerScale nodes, optics, racks, and power equipment.
- Map topology. Draw GPU, storage/access, and management planes; show every link, port speed, oversubscription point, redundant path, and failure domain.
- Validate software. Freeze the operating system, firmware, drivers, CUDA, operators, Kubernetes, container images, NVIDIA AI Enterprise, and Dell Automation Platform versions as a tested matrix.
- Approve facilities. Sign off the rack elevation, power and cooling budget, floor loading, cable routes, fire controls, and service access.
- Run acceptance tests. Test GPU health and memory, inter-GPU communication, distributed-training scaling, storage throughput and metadata concurrency, checkpoint recovery, network failover, monitoring alerts, and node replacement procedures.
- Document operations. Deliver diagrams, asset and firmware inventories, runbooks, escalation contacts, backup and restore procedures, maintenance windows, and rollback steps.

How to phrase a purchase or reseller request
The clearest product starting point is “Dell PowerEdge XE9680 GPU server.” For a production request, add the required GPU generation and memory, node count, PowerScale capacity and protection, 400 GbE and 200 GbE fabrics, 1 GbE management, software versions, rack and power assumptions, deployment services, and support response target. Ask a Dell-authorized reseller, systems integrator, or professional-services partner to return a validated architecture, exact part numbers, compatibility matrix, rack elevation, power budget, implementation plan, and lifecycle terms.
Retail listings may omit GPU configuration, warranty, seller status, regional fulfillment, and firmware entitlement. Verify those details immediately before ordering; a listing title alone is not evidence that it matches the validated architecture.
