Delivery apps are difficult to test because one order depends on several apps and services staying in sync while location, connectivity, and timing change. A customer, merchant, and courier may each see a different part of the same workflow; a correct screen in one app does not prove that the order state, ETA, payment, and notifications are correct everywhere. Available figures describe mobile apps generally—not delivery-app QA budgets or delivery-specific failure costs.
Why does a delivery order create so many testing problems?
A delivery workflow crosses application and operational boundaries. The customer places an order, the merchant accepts and prepares it, and the courier picks it up and completes the delivery. Depending on the service, each action can update a backend, change a route or estimated arrival time, trigger a notification, and alter what another role sees.

That makes the core test question more demanding than “Did the screen load?” It is whether the right state reached the right systems and people, in the right order, and whether the workflow recovered when an update was delayed, lost, or repeated. This is practitioner guidance, not a universal testing standard.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOne action can have several consequences
For example, a courier marking an order as picked up should not only change the courier’s screen. The backend should record the transition, the customer-facing status should update, and any relevant ETA or support view should reflect the event. A test that checks only the button response can miss a broken handoff.

Time and location are part of the product behavior
Location drift, delayed GPS updates, movement between locations, and changes in network availability can affect routing and ETA behavior. A workflow that passes with a stationary device and uninterrupted connection may fail during an actual trip. App backgrounding and resuming can expose similar timing problems.
What should a delivery-app test plan cover?
Build coverage around end-to-end state changes and the conditions that can interrupt them. The checks below are a practical framework, not a claim that every team needs an identical test suite.
Roles and order-state transitions
- Exercise the customer, merchant, and courier flows that the product supports.
- After a role changes an order, verify the resulting state in the backend and in the other relevant interfaces.
- Check that delayed, repeated, or out-of-order events do not leave roles with contradictory order states.
- Include cancellation, handoff, and completion paths where they exist in the product.
Location and ETA behavior
- Test location changes, drift, and delayed location updates rather than relying only on a stable GPS signal.
- Verify that location and status changes propagate to the route, ETA, and customer-facing views that depend on them.
- Check what users see when a location update is unavailable or arrives late.
Connectivity and app lifecycle
- Interrupt and restore network connectivity during meaningful steps, then check whether the workflow resumes correctly.
- Background and reopen the app during an in-progress order.
- Verify that retry behavior neither loses nor duplicates operational events.
- Include crash and recovery paths for workflows where losing the current state would matter.
Payments, sign-in, and communication
Include authentication, payment, and notification paths alongside the delivery workflow. These are not merely peripheral screens: an order can be operationally correct yet unusable if a customer cannot sign in, a payment state is wrong, or an important update does not appear.

Platforms and physical devices
Choose an iOS and Android device matrix that reflects the product’s supported operating systems and target audience. Physical-device testing can reveal behavior that a simulator or emulator does not reproduce, while simulators and emulators can still help broaden repeatable coverage. The goal is representative evidence, not testing every device on every change.
Mobot’s 2026 report says important findings in its tested-app sample sometimes appeared on only one tested platform. That supports treating platform coverage as a real risk; it does not establish which device matrix is right for a particular delivery service.
How can QA teams make the coverage actionable?
Turn each critical workflow into a state-transition check: define the starting state, the action, the expected state in each affected system, and the recovery behavior if the event is interrupted. Then select test conditions that can reproduce the likely failure modes.

- Map the workflow. List the customer, merchant, courier, and backend states that change from order placement through delivery completion.
- Mark cross-system expectations. For each important action, specify which interfaces, notifications, routing or ETA data, and backend records should change.
- Add interruption cases. Repeat critical transitions with location changes, temporary network loss, app backgrounding, delayed events, and retry behavior.
- Select representative devices. Cover supported platforms and a reasoned set of physical devices; use simulators or emulators where they provide efficient repeatability.
- Automate stable checks and inspect failures. Automate repeatable flows where appropriate, while tracking flaky tests and maintenance so unreliable automation does not obscure real regressions.
When comparing testing approaches, the useful question is what conditions they can reproduce and what work remains for the team—not which method is universally best.
| Testing approach | Useful for | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Simulator or emulator | Repeatable checks across selected software configurations and rapid feedback. | How the workflow behaves on every physical device or under real field conditions. |
| Physical-device testing | Observing behavior on representative hardware and platform combinations. | Coverage of every device, operating-system version, or field condition. |
| End-to-end app and backend checks | Verifying that an action produces the expected state across connected systems. | Reliable results if the test cannot control or diagnose timing, network, and location conditions. |
| Automated scenarios | Repeating stable workflows and checking known expectations. | Low maintenance or trustworthy feedback unless failures and flakiness are monitored. |
Mobot, Tricentis, and Kobiton discuss mobile testing and automation, but the cited material does not establish that AI-based, visual, selector-based, or any other specific automation method is best for every delivery app.
What do the published numbers say about defects and cost?
The available figures are broad mobile-app findings and survey estimates. They can provide context for QA planning, but none measures delivery-app testing budgets, the cost of a failed delivery order, or savings caused by a particular testing technique.

| Source and date | Published finding | What it does—and does not—measure |
|---|---|---|
| Mobot, 2026 | 6,372 unique defects across 83 apps in 11 industries, reported for July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026. The report says the findings came from more than 145,000 automated test executions and 5.8 million QA actions. | A vendor-produced, multi-industry tested-app sample; it is not stated to be a probability sample and does not isolate delivery apps. |
| Mobot, 2026 | Five categories—broken navigation, missing or blank content, login or authentication failures, payment issues, and crashes—accounted for 57% of its findings. | The category distribution in that same tested-app sample, not a delivery-app defect breakdown. |
| Tricentis, 2024 | 90% of surveyed respondents estimated that poor mobile-app quality could cost their businesses up to $2.49 million in lost revenue per year. | Respondents’ estimates of potential business impact across mobile applications, not measured delivery losses or QA-team spending. |
| Kobiton, 2024 | Its survey materials report that 75% of respondents said slow mobile-app release cycles cost their companies at least $100,000 per year; 13% placed the annual cost between $1 million and $10 million. | Respondents’ estimates about slow release cycles, not delivery-app costs or a measured QA budget. |
The practical conclusion is narrow: mobile testing reports identify platform-specific and common app defects, while surveys suggest respondents perceive significant business consequences from mobile quality and slow releases. Those findings do not quantify what delivery-app QA costs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is delivery-app QA actually costing a team?
No delivery-specific QA cost statistic is established in the available evidence. A team should not relabel general mobile-app survey estimates as the cost of testing a delivery service, the annual cost of failed orders, or savings from a testing tool.

To estimate its own QA burden, a delivery team can track costs in separate buckets:
Best Value
- 【LARGE SIZE AND CAPACITY】:23"W * 15"H * 14"D, soft ,durable material , can help you save valuable space. This Insulated Delivery bag is also suitable for your car to store food or to help you clean the trunk
- 【SUPER PRACTICAL】:This Insulate Delivery bag is large and strong enough to have an insulating layer that can store hot and cold items for a long time and keep them fresh

- 【TRANSPARENT POCKET】:This Insulated Delivery bag has transparent pockets for storing recipes or important and visible items. This bag can also food transport in restaurants for work, keep your Pizza heat
- 【PROMISE SATISFACTION】:We Promise To Offer Best Quality Products . Food delivery bags for uber eats/doordash and grubhub
- Test work: time spent designing, running, reviewing, and maintaining manual and automated checks.
- Device and environment coverage: the team’s actual spending on physical devices, test environments, or device access, if applicable.
- Failure investigation and rework: effort spent diagnosing defects, repairing affected flows, and repeating validation.
- Production impact: delivery-specific incidents and their documented consequences, measured from the team’s own operational data rather than borrowed survey figures.
Keep those categories distinct. QA expenditure is not the same as lost revenue, and a reported business-impact estimate is not evidence of a team’s testing budget. For a credible internal estimate, define a period, include the same cost categories consistently, and record how each figure was measured.
Why do automation and real-device coverage involve trade-offs?
Automation can make repeatable checks easier to run, but it does not remove the need to choose scenarios, maintain checks as the product changes, and investigate failures. Physical devices can add evidence about hardware and platform behavior, but testing every supported combination on every change may be impractical. Teams should compare approaches by:
- Whether they cover the iOS, Android, and physical-device combinations relevant to their users.
- Whether they can reproduce location changes, connectivity interruptions, and app lifecycle events.
- Whether they verify backend and cross-role state, not just visible screen elements.
- How quickly they return feedback and how much test maintenance and failure triage they require.
In a March 2024 company release, Tricentis Chief Product and Strategy Officer Mav Turner argued that automation, including AI and low-code/no-code approaches, can help teams test quickly and deliver value. That is a vendor executive’s view; it is not independent evidence that automation produces those outcomes in every context.

Delivery apps are challenging to test because their outcomes depend on coordinated state across roles, services, devices, location, and time. The most useful response is to test complete state transitions under realistic interruptions, choose platform coverage deliberately, and measure the team’s own QA and incident costs. Published mobile-app statistics can add context, but they do not answer the delivery-specific dollar question.
