A smart ring does not directly measure one all-purpose “health” score. Oura Ring collects signals including sleep, movement, heart rate, heart-rate variability (HRV), nighttime skin-temperature change and breathing patterns, then uses them to display measurements and calculate summaries. Five useful morning checks are Sleep, Readiness, resting heart rate and HRV, temperature deviation, and respiratory rate. Scores are wellness guides—not diagnoses—and make the most sense as trends against your own usual patterns.
How to read Oura’s morning screen
The ring collects signals; scores such as Sleep and Readiness are derived summaries. Oura describes the distinction with the phrase “Oura Ring measures. Membership explains.” The figures are estimates and personal comparisons, not direct readings of every aspect of health. The app’s visible features can vary by device generation, membership, platform and context, so not every metric will necessarily appear on every morning screen. Oura’s product explainer describes how the ring and membership work together.

The five Oura stats to check each morning
1. Sleep Score and sleep details
Sleep Score summarizes your night, while the details view estimates time awake and time in light, deep and REM sleep. Oura says its sleep-staging algorithm uses movement, skin temperature, resting heart rate, HRV and respiratory rate. Oura Member Care reports 79% agreement between the algorithm and polysomnography (PSG), a sleep-lab method. That is the company’s reported validation result—not a promise that every stage estimate for an individual night will match a lab test. Oura’s sleep-stages explanation and sleep guidance provide more detail.
2. Readiness Score
Readiness is a daily score on a 0–100 scale that combines sleep, recent activity and body signals. Overnight contributors include your lowest resting heart rate and when it occurred, average body temperature, sleep quality and movement from the previous day. Contributors marked as “balance” compare weighted recent trends with longer-term patterns, rather than treating a single night as the whole story. Readiness is best read as a prompt to consider recovery and routine, not as a diagnosis or an instruction to ignore how you feel. Oura’s Readiness guide explains the contributors.

3. Resting heart rate and HRV
Resting heart rate and HRV are heart-related signals shown as trends and used in Readiness. Compare them with your own typical pattern; one value is not a universal threshold for good health or a diagnosis. Oura provides sleep and daytime heart-rate views, but automatic daytime readings are subject to movement and signal-quality constraints. Oura’s heart-rate guide describes the views. Its February 2026 cardiovascular white paper also reports a study of 49 healthy subjects in which resting-heart-rate correlation with medical-grade ECG was r² = 0.996 and HRV correlation was r² = 0.980, attributing the study to Kinnunen et al. (2020). These are figures presented in Oura’s account of that study, not a guarantee of accuracy for every wearer or measurement. Read Oura’s cardiovascular white paper.
4. Temperature deviation
This metric is average nighttime skin temperature compared with your personal baseline; it is not core body temperature. Oura says the ring establishes a baseline during the first couple of weeks and measures during sleep to reduce the effects of activity and the environment. A change can reflect a physiological shift, but the metric cannot establish its cause or diagnose a condition. Oura’s temperature guide explains the measurement and its glossary defines related terms.

5. Respiratory rate
The displayed respiratory rate is the estimated average number of breaths per minute during the previous night. Oura says it estimates this from nighttime heart-rate changes, reflecting the relationship between breathing and heart rhythm. Treat it as a nighttime estimate to follow over time, not a direct daytime count or diagnosis. Oura’s respiratory-rate guide describes the metric.
Where activity fits—and what else may be tracked
Activity is important to the picture but is not one of the five overnight checks above. Oura tracks daily movement and exercise; previous-day movement feeds into Readiness and activity balance. Its product explainer describes automatic detection of more than 40 live activities. Feature access varies: Oura’s support page says Activity Heart Rate requires Gen3 or later and active membership. See Oura’s Activity Heart Rate eligibility details.

Oura’s API documentation lists additional data types, including sleep duration and staging, average and lowest heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, temperature deviation and average SpO2 during the main sleep session. An API listing does not mean every item is surfaced in the app for every device or member. Oura’s API documentation lists the available data types.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What these numbers can—and cannot—tell you
Scores and overnight measurements can help you notice changes from your own usual patterns. Oura states that its cardiovascular features are not clinical diagnostic tools. A score or isolated change cannot tell you what caused it or whether you have a medical condition; discuss persistent or concerning symptoms with a qualified clinician rather than relying on a ring reading. Oura’s cardiovascular white paper sets out that limitation.
