To delete a project’s node_modules folder on Windows, open PowerShell in the project directory, preview the target with -WhatIf, then run the same recursive command without that preview option. This lets you verify the exact folder before deleting it.
Delete node_modules with a preview first

Open PowerShell in the project directory. Confirm where you are with

Once the preview is correct, run the deletion command without

Remove-Item -LiteralPath .node_modules -Recurse
In PowerShell, -LiteralPath treats the provided path literally rather than interpreting wildcard characters; -Recurse includes child items; and -WhatIf previews the operation. See Microsoft’s Remove-Item reference.
Choose between removing dependencies and reinstalling them

Use npm ci from the project directory when reinstalling is the goal. It is not a command for leaving dependencies deleted. The npm documentation describes its clean-install behavior and lockfile requirements.

What “for good” means—and what it does not
After the recursive removal completes, the directory is removed through the normal filesystem operation. The cited PowerShell documentation does not promise secure overwriting or that deleted data is unrecoverable. Do not treat this command as forensic erasure.
If deletion fails because of a long path
Windows documents the traditional MAX_PATH limit as 260 characters. On Windows 10 version 1607 and later, many common Win32 functions can use longer paths when the system setting is enabled and the application opts in. Enabling the setting alone does not make every application or command-line tool long-path aware. See Microsoft’s maximum path length documentation, last updated July 16, 2024.

A failed deletion can have different causes, including a locked file, an access restriction, or a path-length issue. These sources do not establish one fix for every failure, so do not add -Force or switch to administrator mode as a blanket remedy. Microsoft notes that -Force can address some hidden or read-only items but cannot override security restrictions.
